View Full Version : Don’t you just hate people who....

Inspired by words from another thread:

“It's all affectations. Something that really does not impress me. Like blokes who wear cowboy hats and boots. I just think they look like complete tits.

Except Lemmy”.

Don’t you just hate people who can pull off wearing things that no one should? Lemmy in his hat and boots, what a classic example.

Once on the Big Breakfast they dressed Samuel. L. Jackson in a rediculous outfit and wig - and he still looked cool!

Any other examples anyone can think of, or even where it goes very wrong - The oufits being worn by Imagination on the cover of their Body Talk album comes to mind.

saw a bloke the other day committing a number of sins all at once:

Riding a push bike
base ball cap worn backwards
Pink t shirt
Shorts
Man bag

if I'd been driving I would have run him off the road as a favour to humanity. Is it just that people have no self-respect anymore?

Was he wearing sandals with socks?

Macca

No, dayglo orange trainers. He might have been gay which I suppose partially excuses him, but not for the backwards baseball cap.

In any case sandals are unacceptable with or without socks or regardless of sexual persuasion.

I have a man bag - It’s called a scrotum.

Usain Bolt copped off with an attractive young woman in a nightclub, and took her back to his hotel.

She wasted no time stripping him off, and when she removed his shirt, she saw the work 'Nike' tattooed on his chest. 'That earns me £100,000 a year'. Then she took off his trousers, revealing another tattoo. 'Reebok paid me £200,000 to have that one done'.

She pulled his boxers down, and reeled back in horror at the word 'AIDS' on his penis.

'It's ok', he said, 'play with it a bit, it says Adidas'.

On the subject of suitable clothing I was only thinking the other day, when an old fella (like me) wears jeans .... well, they don't look right do they, I mean what's a pensioner doing walking around in Levis? Surely they should be sporting some beige slacks with an elasticated waist and a generous collection of assorted food stains. But when I was in the USA a few years back old geezers in their 80's were always in jeans (and baseball caps) and it looked perfectly normal, cool even.

In the US jeans are the standard uniform. Unless there’s a dress code, everyone wears jeans. Unless you’re at Walmart, then you’ll see many people, women especially, who are wearing sweat pants, younger ones in pajamas! Yes, people wearing pajamas in public.

As ever with these things, it's how you carry it off, and some folk can do it better than others (much like with beards and ponytails). One thing that helps, is if the jeans concerned actually FIT properly.

I've seen lots of old guys wandering around in jeans three sizes too big for them, so not only is the arse all baggy, but of course the waist is slacker than a whore's vag... Not to worry, that's easily solved by strapping yourself in, sausage-like, with a nice belt!

Plus, at the other end, the legs are WAY too long, so the answer there of course is to have 6-inch turn ups, then pop on a pair of suit shoes!!:mental:

Perhaps an idea would be to buy the right size in the first place?

Anyway, never mind jeans on OAPs, what about SHORTS, ably displaying boney legs covered in an unsightly network of varicose veins??:spew::no:

Shorts on a man are unacceptable unless you are on holiday in another (hot) country. Or in the military on a tropical posting.

I know blokes who can't wait to put shorts on as soon as the sun peeks out and then keep them on until October. What is the fascination? It's never hot enough here for them to be necessary and anyone over the age of 12 looks like a complete dick in them.

Yes. In fact most people don't look great in shorts and anybody over fifty should have a really good think about how they look in them.

Marco
15-06-2018, 07:29
Yup, but again it largely depends on the individual. I'm quite tall, so have long legs, and as I do a lot of walking, they're quite muscular. Plus, being olive-skinned, they're not milk-bottle white, like those of most Brits, so I look ok in shorts:)

Of course, there are shorts, and there are shorts.... They've got to be the right kind! Clue: the WRONG kind, are those you used to wear in PE as a teenager;)

Things were more straightforward twenty five years ago. There were clear social divisions and attire said everything.

Collar & tie: bank worker, office knob, lawyer

Jeans: ordinary folk

Shell suit: scumbags

The categories were neatly defined!

I disagree. See my last post. I don't wear them until October, and only on the hottest summer days, simply to stay cool.

Just because you'd look daft in them with your skinny wee milky-white legs, doesn't mean others can't carry it off!:ner::D

Comfortable jeans cost too much these days. Don't mind paying thirty quid but ninety quid is taking the piss.

I've dressed like a scumbag for decades. Simple reason is I've always lived in rough areas and it is helpful to blend in so you don't get bothered. You don't see piranhas eating each other.

In terms of jeans, I buy exclusively 501s, as I like the fit and the quality of the denim is second to none. Plus, only dorks wear zip-ups!:nono:

They cost me around £70 and last for YEARS. They also look good when they fade a little bit. Simply buy three pairs and interchange them as necessary, and you're sorted for a very LONG time.

Therefore, you have to look not just at the initial cost of jeans, but how long they'll last!

Lol - a pert bot, no doubt!:eyebrows:

The point I was making though is that if you're over 30, then tight-fitting, short, shorts (Speedos at beaches, etc) look utterly ridiculous, especially in day-glow colours!

Go for something baggier and longer, in a plain colour, but with a bit of style, and as long as you're the right type of person for shorts, and under 60, you'll be fine:)

The partnering footwear is also crucial, so unless your at the beach, sandals of ANY TYPE are a big no-no!! Go for trainers (with trainer socks), as longer socks just look wrong. Or some sort of decent looking casual shoes, with no socks.

Sandals are NEVER OKAY. Nobody wants to see your stinking feet. Put some bloody shoes or trainers on or stay in the house. There are no excuses.

I remember the good old days when kids wearing sandals were ridiculed, beaten up, and then ridiculed some more. We have gone far too soft as a nation.

Not ok, but out on the street, *marginally* more acceptable. If you're at the beach, and they're worn without socks, then like flip-flops, they're fine. However, I personally don't wear either under any circumstances. If I'm at the beach during the summer, then it's strictly bare feet (with a T-shirt and shorts).

What about suits? I was talking to a young chap the other day who thought they were the be all and end all as far as clothing goes. For me they are totally boring, especially the jackets. OK, I can see the elegance aspect in a well cut outfit on a good figure but that aside 'good' suits tend to be mostly plain and of a similar style and as I say, boring as hell. When I was a hippy teenager, we used to call blokes in suits 'stiffs'.

I spent thirty five years working in various civil engineering offices surrounded by 'stiffs' in suits or at least collar & tie and I got away with jeans and teeshirt the whole time. Wasn't much they could do about it anyway.

Marco.

Women can wear what they want, it isn't the same.

I'm same as you, I will not wear sandals or flip flops even at the beach or the pool, there it is barefoot only. Saw a bloke the other day wearing shorts and flip flops walking down the street by my house. Had his little daughter with him. He's probably scarred her for life.

Worse still last time I was at my brothers his son was wearing sandals, I had a quiet word, don't think he'll be doing it again. It's up to us all to make a stand against it, especially with Brexit coming up.

Not me , but I may have a pair of plum-coloured needlecord jeans somewhere.

I loathed the fashion style of the '70s: flared trousers; loon pants; skinny-rib pullovers; tight fitting shirts with huge collars, and clumpy platform shoes. :spew:

It's a nightmare, isn't it?

Flip-flops are BEACHWEAR only, nothing else. Therefore, they shouldn't be seen in any other environment. We get folk here at Sunday mass, flip-flopping down to the altar, in their shorts, to receive Holy Communion:rolleyes:

Aside from being disrespectful, it just looks bloody ridiculous!! The problem in this country is that as soon as folk glimpse the merest sight of the sun, off comes their tops and on go the flip-flops:doh:

As Alice Cooper pointed out, an attractive woman will look good in rags with dirt in her hair.

Nah, it's just fashion. I know where you're coming from, but for me there's no problem with young guys experimenting with clothes. There's nothing narcissistic about it. I used to do it when I was young. I'm not into the bushy beard thing now, though.

Haha - yes ties are *so* you!

You can keep them, as far as I'm concerned, as they're the most uncomfortable things ever... Had a lifetime of wearing them (and suits) as a salesman! So these days, I like to be comfy and casual, and that means allowing my neck to breathe and be unconstrained by a buttoned up shirt.

The problem is so many young girls now lack self-confidence/have low self-esteem and struggle embracing their femininity, so simply bum around like slobs, behaving like blokes, thus turning into swearing, pint-swilling 'ladettes'. If it's *that* hot, Kevin, I'd rather go barefoot, than wear sandals, which often just look wrong. I think you'll find that's how most of the 'locals' go around in the very hottest countries!;)

In the Western world, our feet spend far too much time cooped up in various kinds of shoes, so it's healthy to free them now and then. In a warm, clean and safe environment, once your skin's suitably hardened, you can pretty much walk anywhere barefoot.

After all, it's how we were born to function.

Again, it depends on the wearer and also the type of suit. I used to sell them, indeed managed a mens department, so know a little about the subject.

Firstly, if you're going to look good in a nice suit, it helps being tall and reasonably slim. Suits simply aren't for fatties or short-arses - and if you're the former, stay away from ones with double-breasted jackets, as they simply accentuate your, erm, 'girth', especially the pleated trousers that often go with them. Single-breasted suits are generally more flattering, especially in dark colours.

Secondly, CUT (and fit) is everything. A simply styled, well-cut suit, made from good quality material, can be extremely elegant on the right type of wearer - and that also applies to matching shirts. A poor shirt will spoil the look of a nice suit, just as much as a cheap tie.

Thirdly, accessorise well, by choosing a complimentary tie and shoes (a tip is always to spend decent money on a good tie, as cheap ones look like shit and will spoil the appearance of even the nicest suit - and most importantly, know how to tie it properly!). A good quality leather belt on trousers (the same colour) also helps, especially when you remove your jacket.

Getting the shoes right of course is also crucial, which should always be the same colour as the suit, same with socks, and always made of leather throughout (with a slight heel), and properly polished. Avoid anything pointy-toed, especially if you're a short arse, as you'll just look ridiculous. Instead opt for something more classic, like a good brogue.

If a colour contrast is sought, never do it with shoes, always with the shirt or tie. Team it all up with a nice watch and cufflinks (if a suitable shirt has been chosen), and a suit is far from boring :)

As ever, trends are followed by mindless sheep. Why wear something that's deemed as 'trendy', if it makes you look ridiculous? It's just crazy. Better to create YOUR OWN look/trend! I always admire people who aren't afraid of expressing themselves, through the clothes that they wear - as long as it's carried out with some class.

A) it shows you've got a personality, instead of being just a bland/boring 'no mark', and b) it demonstrates that you're a free-thinker, not a sheep. blindly following the herd, and who's not afraid of sticking two fingers up to convention! Such people only deserve my respect.

And yes they should be well polished. Socks should match the colour of the shirt, unless it is white, then the socks should be either dark blue or black.

Ties (preferably made of silk) should compliment the shirt - so no 'spots' with 'stripes'. Matching or complimentary colours are fine. Cuff links are best worn with shirts that have 'double cuffs'.

Tie widths vary according to fashion. Try to avoid very narrow or very wide ties. And tie them so the front facing part just touches the wasteband of the trousers, not down at crotch level, the way Donald Trump wears his.

Who said it had to be in a "professional capacity"?

Shoes should always compliment the colour of the suit, not necessarily match it: brown shoes with a brown or tan or fawn coloured suit, black coloured shoes with everything else.

Of course. What I was referring to, as indeed Macca has pointed out, was the most commonly committed 'cardinal sin', which is wearing brown shoes with something other than a brown suit!

Socks should match the colour of the shirt, unless it is white, then the socks should be either dark blue or black.

Mmm... Mostly yes, but if you were wearing, say, a dark grey suit, with a grey/blue shirt, I'd still be tempted for the socks to match the trousers, than the shirt. not least because you're unlikely to find socks exactly that colour.

Plus, and this is just a personal thing, I'm not into 'showing off' socks; I prefer them simply to blend as invisibly into an outfit as possible, especially when it comes to suits, which is why I always match them with trousers.

Yup, I'm with you on all of that. I presume you meant 'waistband'?;)

Shoes with jeans. Just say no. Boots or trainers or if you must, Converse, or even Dunlop Green Flash. But never shoes.

Unless they are those black jeans that don't look like jeans and you are quite cool anyway. Otherwise forget it.

Hooped tops - they don't look good on anyone. Man or women. Please understand that.

Saw another man bag today. Really don't like it. Don't like to even see it. Makes me despair.

If you've got crap to carry around that you can't fit in your trouser and coat pockets (and you shouldn't have, really), get a small Bergen. It's not a great look either but it's an order of magnitude better than carrying a handbag.

I'm with you there. Brown suits I simply don't do - and indeed have never done. It's a personal taste thing of course, but I find brown clothes, of any description, rather ageing and old-fashioned.

Brown cords, especially, which reminds me of a chemistry teacher I once had, who didn't have a clue about dress sense [I think his mum chose his clothes], which I find is often the case with academics.

Lol... I understand, but I simply don't do 'top-up' shopping, or walking about with carrier bags. Del catches that in her car, on her way home from work. Otherwise, the main 'shop' is done in one swoop together, once a week, in my car.

When I'm out and about on foot, I like to feel as free and as unencumbered by 'stuff' as possible. I even hate wearing a jacket unless I have to :)

Plus, any shops I'd use are further away from me than half a mile (more like 2 miles), so I can't really just 'pop to the shops'.

Precisely, me neither, and that also includes wearing rucksacks/backpacks, although they're infinitely better [in a different league altogether] from 'man bags'. Nor do I, that's why I prefer to use a backpack or someting I can carry on my shoulder. When travelling I won't use a suitcase, much preferring a holdall which I carry with the handles over my shoulder.

So do I, but the difference is, Del brings it back in her car after work. I phone (or email) her, tell her what's needed, and she brings it home. I detest food shopping in supermarkets (or pretty much anywhere except country markets, which are a little more exciting), so avoid it like the plague.

I've got one of those hard shell suitcases with the wheels and the extendable handle. That was a good buy. Been all over with that and it is still as good as new.

Ours are the softer, zip-up type, simply because most of the time we go on holiday, it's in the car, so they can be squeezed into a space in the boot or roof rack easier than the hard-shell type. At airports, I simply wheel them along the floor.

Del and I usually share the one large suitcase between us (I like travelling light), so there's never really lots to carry. Rucksacks are out of the question because she wouldn't want her clothes all folded up like that and squashed inside anything smaller than a proper suitcase, which allows for much neater storage of clothes.

Plus, quite often, we wrap bottles of wine up in socks, to prevent breakages, and squeeze them into gaps inside the suitcase, same with foodstuffs, as we always bring a shedload of stuff like that back from abroad, and you can't really do that with a rucksack.

I do agree though that it's easier and more comfortable to carry stuff on your back, so if we went on a walking holiday or something, a rucksack/backpack would of course be the answer:)

I find it odd when people always seem to have a collared shirt and slacks on for every occassion. Dress right down until you really need to dress up.

It has become a trend here in the US, that young men wear their pants down below their arse! No kidding, it started to be cool to wear your jeans low, and show off the tops of your boxers. But as the trend continued now they have their ass completely out of their pants! It looks completely ridiculous. And many towns are outlawing this behavior as indecent exposure, and many stores refuse to serve them. But I know the more people complain, the more they want to do it, if people stopped talking about it the fad would pass. No young lady is impressed by such a sight, how are you going to break into a run if someone gets after you? And people are literally laughing at you! I just don’t get it. We enjoy many freedoms here, but some have to push it to the ridiculous. Whenever I see someone with their pants below their ass, my first thought is, “how stupid!”, why would looking stupid be popular? They must actually be stupid.

They must actually be stupid.

quite a few do it here too; mostly scumbags tbf, but that and hoody wearing is still poplular.. baseball caps worn the wrong way is another idiotic idea. funny how its the idiotic things that become popular, mostly by idiots.

It has become a trend here in the US, that young men wear their pants down below their arse! No kidding, it started to be cool to wear your jeans low, and show off the tops of your boxers. I believe it is to emulate being held in a police cell, your belt is taken away from you so your trousers hang down round your arse. Same crap as the fake gunshot holes in clothing and shoes with laces removed.

Not heard of it but a good point for its origins

Seeing as like what we is talking about footwear, what opinions are there here about Crocs?

I wouldn't be seen dead in sandals, trainers make my feet perspire like mad, so I wear crocs with lots of lovely holes so my feet get plenty of ventilation.

Don't give a toss if they are a fashion disaster either :ner:

I have seen some of these young men with their trousers falling down, a most unwholesome sight! Much better for young ladies to wear jeans with their arses hanging out? That would be more sensible. Not the older ladies though, that would be silly and very unattractive

My Crocs were really handy (or should that be footy) for just wondering out into the garden and garage. Also they where great for pressure-washing the patio. Dog ate them, the only bloddy shoes it has ever eating. Only cost me £4 in Asda sometime in the early 2000s and where over 10 years old, so not as if I hadn’t had my money’s worth out of them. Not something I would go out in public in however.

"Crocs" are nothing more than plastic/rubber sandals anyway. Comfortable, waterproof - but godamn ugly!

Apparently your dog had an opinion!

Plastic sandals were launched here in the 1950's as I recall. It was a bit of a novelty to wear them while swimming in our local kiddies pool but my abiding memory is of the heavily grooved soles which acted as dog- sh!t magnets and were impossible to clean out !!
