certainly dont make them how they used to :)

There were some fab looking music centres around when I was young back in the 70's. My cousin had a great Sharp piece that sounded lovely to my ears

We need more pics on the forum of music centres from the era :)

Here's the one my cousin had https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-SHARP-SG-315E-Stereo-Music-Centre-Record-Player-Tape-FM-AM-WORKING/232787801015?epid=1623328808&hash=item36333bf3b7:g:e2AAAOSwW8FbDvGp

He also added some Wharfedales, Lintons I think it was and ran them additionally with the originals.

As I say, certainly sounded musical as heck to my ears - loved it ! and brings back good memories :)

No laughter from me - some of those old music centres were surprisingly good and that looks like a fine beast!

How does it sound?

I’ve not listened to it yet but hoping it’ll sound as good as it looks, build quality is excellent.
I’ll hook it up tomorrow

That's a lovely thing, Andrew, and would have been pretty expensive in its day. I'd imagine it will sound decent, the T/T in particular, if the cartridge isn't shagged, although the weak points in these things were notoriously the amplification and speakers.

Good fun, though!:)

So what's with buying all this quality vintage gear - are you setting up as a dealer?;)

Marco.

Hi Marco , I hadn’t thought of myself as a dealer , just having fun with it but if that’s a hint ? I just don’t sell enough to be a dealer I don’t think.
Let me know [emoji1303]

Restoring these bits gives me great pleasure Marco , if and when I do sell the items it’s usually at cost unless I have bought something for next to nothing and it has a high value but most of the time I fuck up ( the jbl’s for example)
I’d love to be in a position to make a living from a hobby but as we talk I can’t get to the back of my garage.

Nice one, Andrew. Carry on, mate. It's of no interest to me what you sell your refurbished stuff for, even if it was to members for a small profit, as I'd simply see it as providing a valuable service to the AoS community:)

I think what you're doing is great, as I'm all for restoring vintage equipment and giving it to a good home, or simply doing it as a hobby. It's also something that's of great interest to our members, so keep it up!

I had something very similar to that way back in the 70's. I had a paper round and worked on a farm at weekends and with Christmas and birthday money I bought a National Panasonic music centre. To me it was the best thing I'd ever heard, I was like a dog with two dicks in a street full of lamp posts. I don't remember the model number but it was very much like this one. Happy days.

Hi Ian , i remember seeing National Panasonic ones , very nice .
I’m looking forward to hearing this one tomorrow though I doubt the Wharfedale Linton xp3’s ( they came with it ) will do it justice so I’ll hook up my radfords to it.

I loved it Andrew, after my old Dansette record player and my parents Ferguson radiogram it was the most exotic thing in the world.

It should do! Which source did you use? The tuner should be particularly good (if you have a proper aerial).

What does the turntable sound like?

Yes listening to the tuner , damn good bit of kit but worthless really unless I can find an interior designer, the cassette deck does work but the sound is just a load of clicks , new drive belt ordered for the TT .
It came with some Wharfedale Linton xp3’s that are almost like new , again not worth much .

My uncle used to have the Sony version, with big 3 way Sony speakers. It was very good. He owned it from new, couldn't recall what he had paid but said it was very expensive. Hi Fi World featured one in their old worlde column a few years back now. Last time I saw him I asked him if he still had it but he said he's skipped it years previously. Gutted. He still has a pair of Lintons that he bought new in about 1970, uses them on his TV.

I’d bet that it was that music centre was responsible for your love of Hifi ?
My Dad had a dynatron in a fancy wooden cabinet ( sounded good to me) and it was probably that which got me started , but then I got my second job with Hammond organs in Bletchley and my manager there would build amps from scratch and the odd pair of speakers with fane drivers .

always wanted an electric organ. had one in the shop and used to play it, badly. yup. that and then my bro got a jvc separate system that was good in its own way. i ended up with the tt which had one of those belt drive arms.
