View Full Version : RADFORD MONITOR M.90 , rescued
Lovely ole things don’t you think?
I’ve yet to work on the cabinets and one woofer has the coating coming away which shouldn’t be difficult ( if it warrants doing )
All drivers working as they should though hf from the crossover isn’t working so I’ll have to source replacements ( I’ll do them all of course).
I think the sheep must have been of the Glastonbury breed [emoji848]

Not seen any of those for a long time.
It may say Radford on the mid, but it's a Goodmans unit. The bass driver looks like an alloy frame version of the Magnum K2 unit, cone looks similar.
The 'coating' on the woofer is a vinyl skin and is also an integral pert of the roll surround.

Hi Geoff, yes looking on the net they are apparently all Goodmans drivers .
I’d like to date them too ( not go out for dinner and a snog [emoji16])

Well the one marked Peerless is a Peerless! :) Although Radford did use Goodmans tweeters too.
They date from around 1970.
If the outer edge of the vinyl skin is coming away it may be possible to glue it back.

Yes it’s definitely repairable

Actually looking at the photos again, it looks like the Peerless tweeters are replacements for the originals, which would likely have been DT3's.

Looks good Andrew.
I had a similar Radford ages ago. Great sound but went a bit soft. Probably just needed a recap. What do the crossovers look like on yours?

Hi Edward, I will photograph the crossovers shortly and post them ( I forgot to do it ) they looked very complex though ! Hold on .....

It's a wirewound resistor. They often look a bit manky when they're old, bit I'll bet it measures and works just fine.

See, I know f’all . I do have a capacitor tester now though ( all the gear & no idea )

That's just Radford's part number. My money's on it being a Goodmans DT3.

Shouldn’t I get a pair of dt3’s then if I’m to restore these ?
There are a pair of knackered Goodmans mezzo speakers for sale locally too , would they have dt3’s ?

The tweeter tests good but no sound from it

No. They'll have SEAS or Philips tweeters.

Interesting that Radford claim output up to 25kHz when I know the DT3 rolls off well below that.

Where did you read that? I'm pretty sure it's wrong.
Mezzo SL with SEAS tweeters:

Tweeter tests ok when disconnected of course ( 8 ohms ) but when I put the tester on the tweeter connections on the crossover it reads 01.7 ohms ?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180605/6ec1beec82771f79198069987779087f.heichttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180605/3ca00f23e7229e283a05812a37df2db2.heic

Cap probably.
Don't use the speakers like this. You could blow your amp.

That's the Philips tweeter. Nasty things, even more brash than the DT3.

If the Peerless tweeters are sounding Ok, I'd stick with them. They'll be better than the DT3, Philips or SEAS.

At approaching fifty years of age, I'd not trust any of them and replace the lot. Silver ones too.
Cone vinyl successfully reglued [emoji16]
That brown stuff is original! Not me !
