Sea mist is trying to decide whether to come in or go out here by the sea. It's warm though with very light airs. :)

Searing hot here in the direct sun.... A bit too hot for me, but at least it's dry, as I've got three original stained-glass oak Victorian doors to wax, for the lounge, kitchen and downstairs bedroom areas, ready to be hung on Sunday.

They're coming up quite well I think, although because they're sat on top of a covered table, you can't make out the colours of the stained-glass panels, which in reality have a burgundy red border, with amber and black coloured inlays. The glass inlays actually date back to the 17th century:

Should be nice when I put the handles on (which are antique solid-ebony 'beehive' shaped), and get the joiner to hang them!

Look very nice Marco, good to see we've got past the 'panel over it' or 'chuck away and buy new' of the eighties. These were made by real craftsmen, no power tools in those days!

Marco
01-06-2018, 20:00
Cheers mate, indeed! They're so solidly made and heavy. These are the handles that will be going on them:

Currently 17 deg and drizzle - perfect weather for re-roofing the garage! Oh well I'm committed now. Can't believe the numpty who originally built it used chipboard and torch-on felt. All turned into Weetabix.

Just need to take roof down to bare bones, then put on OSB and Firestone Rubbercover, then it can piss down for all I care. :) Trims, fascias and guttering can wait till next Saturday.

Today it's chilli-infused hot-smoked salmon with a red onion and pepper salad, following by barbecued lamb cutlets, with loads of veg! I may be some time

You know you can have too much of a good thing.

I've been doing some more work on my garage roof, but the heat up there is unbearable. I took the thermometer from the garden and sat it on the roof, and the mercury rose to 48 deg C. It only goes up to 50.

I'm sacking it off until after tea, and I'll just have some time in the garden with Steve Wright and a cold drink. :)

Just back from having enjoyed a lovely pub lunch:)

It's sweltering here, currently 26°C, and rising... Simply too hot to sit outside, so currently inside, where it's considerably cooler, as earlier before I left, I drew all the curtains in the lounge to keep the sun out!

Just sipping an cold glass of Coke, with lots of ice and a slice of fresh lemon... Sometimes, when it's *this* hot, an ice-cold Coca-Cola really hits the spot!!

Not exactly cold here down here on the south coast, but its grey, overcast and a bit dreary, and has been all week. A bit of sunshine and some blue skies wouldnt go amiss, especially as I could do with an injection of cheer before heading off to Ireland next week to see the outlaws.

Whilst this may sound good, they are the only teetotal house in the country, and live in the arse end of nowhere just outside Athlone - it's always grey, drab and miserable there, even on the rare occasions when the sun comes out! :(

Marco
08-06-2018, 11:53
Lol, we've pretty much had great weather all week.... Still, look on the positive side, at least you'll be seeing somewhere different for a change! Are you going by car?

If so, I'd also use the opportunity to tour around some of the local area, or plot a route from wherever you land in Ireland, to your destination, which allows you to experience what the rest of the country has to offer. Having that sort of freedom and flexibility is one of the reasons why we almost always go places by car:)

Marco.

Beobloke
08-06-2018, 13:12
Good god, no - I drove over by car once for our wedding and NEVER again!

Compare:

Option 1 - 4 hours to Fishguard in the car, 3 hours on the ferry (it was only an hour and a bit when I did it, but that was on the SeaCat, which no longer does Fishguard to Rosslare) and then another 2.5 hours on somewhat ‘rural’ roads at the other end.

Option 2 - 25 minutes drive to Southampton Airport, 1 hour drinking coffee and having breakfast in the airport, 1 hour 15 minutes flight and then 1 hour or so drive in a hire car to Athlone.

No contest!!

Anyway, we’re going over as there are things to do around the house for mother-in-law and we will be driving down to Cork on the way back to see father-in-law as he’s in a nursing home near there, so it’s not a holiday as such.

That said, we are treating ourselves to one night in a nice hotel in Cork on the last night, though - it has a swimming pool, spa, sauna etc. and most importantly - A BAR!!! [emoji4]

Marco
08-06-2018, 13:25
Ah, all noted. So if you're hiring a car, you could also tour some of the local area. The key thing for me, is always having access to private transport in your country of destination, as I hate being stuck in the one place or being forced to use public transport, which can be simply awful.

I suppose it boils down to how much time you have to do what you need to do, and no doubt the help will be appreciated by your family. The stay in Cork sounds good. That's what I love about you guys, you always make sure trips like that contain a nice treat to look forward to, too!

We're the same. Life's too short not to enjoy yourself:)

Baking hot here even in my naturally air-conditioned living room. Not often that happens.

IIRC last time we had a summer that started this well was 1990. Missed most of it because I was doing my Finals then started work the day after they finished.

1994 was pretty good too, missed that because I was working in an underground cold storage warehouse. Summers where I was on the dole were all wash-outs, naturally.

Personally, it'd need to be a lot colder than 11°C before I'd be tempted to put on any heating. We've completely abandoned using any form of heating here (it so hot and sticky, especially at night), and that will remain the case until at least October...

Dragon used to be 'Lao's' when I moved here in '92. That was pretty good. Then it became 'Lucky House' and the food was inedible. About 10 years ago it changed again and is pretty decent now. We used to have a fantastic Tandoori too, Bangladeshi feller, but he closed down in about '95. That Canton Express you go to has always been the same.

We don't have a Kentucky though, that's a bit of a shame. Probably good for my health though.

Hard to believe though that a city, the size of Stoke, doesn't have a sit down Chinese restaurant... There are half a dozen in Wrexham!

Marco.

You're getting confused between the City Of Stoke On Trent and the town of Stoke Upon Trent. The city is a collection of towns. In the city as a whole there are a fair few, just none in the town where I live.

Marco
17-06-2018, 09:18
Ah I see... I'm just used to a city being the one big place, all under the one name. Still, I doubt your town is any smaller than Wrexham, and we have plenty of sit down Chinese restaurants, not to mention plenty of others...

Marco.

Marco.

Stoke upon Trent is a lot smaller than Wrexham. Wrexham population is 60,000 and the whole of the 'Potteries' is 260,000. Stoke Upon Trent is only a small fraction of that, maybe 20,000?

Still I agree it is surprising there is no Chinese restaurant. There are at least 6 Indian restaurants.

see dog is in sheep mode

Poor lad is showing his age. Plods around the park these days. Back legs are going. He can't get upstairs or into the car without being pushed. Can't stand to eat without back legs collapsing, so I have to sit him and hold his bowl up to his face. He's perfectly well, alert and happy, just old and knackered. 16 years for a largish pooch like him equates to about 85 in human years I guess.

Currently 25°C, with the sun splitting the skies. Wouldn't really want it any hotter... Just watching the football, then will be having lunch al fresco, under the shade of a large parasol!

Just opened a chilled bottle of Chablis, which we'll be enjoying with some gravadlax of salmon, then a decent haut-Médoc with some harissa-marinated Barnsley chops, finishing off with a nice cheeseboard (all Welsh), Perl Wen (like Brie only better), Perl Las (one of the best blues you'll eat), and some Black Bomber mature cheddar, accompanied by Miller's Elements Water Crackers:

Here in Virginia in the US, the weather has been crazy! Not that most of you care, but it has rained nearly every day for two months! Temps are normal, it’s blazing hot this time of year, but I bet we haven’t had 5 days that it hasn’t rained in June. Saturday it rained as hard as I’ve ever seen in my life, for two solid hours! Flooded the place. And a summer shower approaching as I type. Not typical, Virginia is known as a place for outdoor lovers, many vacation here in the Summer.

Those little flying turds are sneaky, silent and they absolutely won't give up until either they have your blood or you splat them. Even having your shirt on won't give you that much protection either - they are equipped to bite through a horse's hide after all.

Not far off that here now... It was murder sleeping last night, and touched 30°C when I went to bed!

Going into the room was like walking into an oven, even with the windows open. That's the problem with having upstairs bedrooms, and an old (well insulated) house with very thick walls, in which the heat is ably retained, after the sun has been 'baking' them throughout the day. At the end of the day, with all the heat rising, you could grow tomatoes up there!!

The only way I can cope at the moment, during the day, is having the curtains closed in the lounge, to block out the sun (luckily ours are quite thick and made from a dark-ish material), and with an electric fan 'trained' on me, sat on the sofa, in not many clothes!

It's nice enough waking up to sunny mornings, but I really can't wait until this weather breaks and we get some rain, as it's so uncomfortable. Our houses simply aren't designed for this type of sustained hot weather.

We have what we refer to as summer and winter duvets (based on TOG value), proper real feather ones, which we interchange as necessary, so they're very light but effective. I don't think we've used the summer one yet this year! We've been sleeping either under a thin sheet, or nothing.

Gonna try a couple of these JML 'Chillmax' pillows: https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/jml-chillimax-pillow/p/0460656?nst=0&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIj4Db99-A3AIV6L3tCh3R7gp2EAQYAiABEgKqzvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds and see if they're any good:)

Anything just now to stay a little cooler at night!!

Why don't you buy an aircon machine?

Marco
02-07-2018, 16:54
Don't like 'em, mate. It's not healthy to continually inhale recirculated air. I got quite bad once, in the car on the way home from Italy, having had the air-con for most of the journey. I was ill for about 3 days!

Nah, a ceiling fan's the way to go, plus you can get some rather cool looking ones, too:cool:

Aren't you all hot and sticky now at night?

I certainly am. Don't enjoy it one bit! Unfortunately, this is consistently the warmest part of the UK.

We got a couple of these chillmax pillows last year, to place between my legs as I was suffering with excessively sweaty scrotom. Problem seems to have passed, so you can have them if you want. Come with free ballbag sweat stains :)

Seriously, they do work up to a point, but they're quite small and I struggled to keep it where I wanted it. I didn't want my face directly on it, so I would place it inside the pillow case. But then it would move around.

From what I've heard about the shape of your face, they might work fine for you :D

Depends on what I was dreaming about...

No not at all. Doesn't bother me. In the Caribbean first thing I do when I get in the hotel room is shut the air con off. I like it warm.

I hear you about recirculated air. I'm not suggesting having it on night and day, just use it for an hour or so at night before you go to bed. The room will slowly heat back up again but by that time you're sound asleep.

Cheeky bastard! I can have the shape of yours 'nicely rearranged', if you like?:eyebrows:

I'll take your Chillmax pillows only if there's a nice whiff of cheese off them (Gorgonzola is a particular favorite), and a few wiry pubes stuck to the surface, so I can pick them off and use them as dental floss. Ya get's me?

Marco, if you're considering a ceiling fan, it's worth taking time to check the quality of them. You do get what you pay for. The cheap ones can be quite ineffective, wobble like buggery and worst of all can be quite noisy.

I know you wouldn't buy a cheapo anyway, just a heads-up about the variations in quality.

I wouldn't mind having my face re-arranged, it could only be an improvement!

Always said you were a mad bastard... Probably sleep in your tracky bottoms too, just for added nutter effect!:D

Aye, wouldn't fancy washing yer sheets after another wet dream about Lindsay Lohan.

Yeah, I know. However, it'd be another ugly modern gadget we could do without, whereas a retro-looking ceiling fan would be quite cool. Plus, it could be used to dry out my underpants.

Nice one, and noted. And no, we don't believe in buying cheapo anything. Stuff has got to be quality and built to last.

Gotta watch the chiggers too.

As I said.

The little blighters got me today. I've got tiny itchy bites on my ankles and the top of my feet.

Don't you find it incredibly hot and sticky at night? We're sleeping with no sheets on top of us at the moment, and all the windows open, and it's still majorly sweaty-betty!

Thankfully, no water issues here yet:)

Marco.

Yes, it is warm at night and I do tend to stick my feet out of the bottom of the duvet but generally it’s OK. We have two sets of windows in our bedroom which we open and I also open the windows on the landing and in the bedroom beside us to get a bit of airflow, which seems to work.

Funnily enough, we’re still on a 9.5 tog duvet as Mrs. B is a cold mortal! Not feather, though, as I’m allergic to them.

I think the only time I’ve really suffered with the heat in bed at night was a couple of years back visiting the wife’s sister in South Carolina. It was generally in the high 30s and very humid during the day, and neither dropped much at night. The ceiling fan was a godsend then!

It's a bit more pleasant out there today. 22C and a hazy sky keeping the heat from the sun from being too much at the moment.

Gone quite dark here and some of that rainy stuff is coming down. Only a drizzle, mind, but it should damp the dust down a bit.
