I hate winter. We've only recently got past the last one (so it seems) and I particularly hate all the Chistmas crap (that seems to start at the end of August these days :rolleyes:). Sorry about that Al! :)

Customer kindly put out some mince pies with afternoon brew last year, and I know it was September, as we were being plagued by wasps. :( They didn't get a share of the pies, just a slap. I like to put a couple of pies in a dish, heated with some Carnation milk on. Only two mind, I'm not a greedy pig :)

The problem with mince pies being on sale early is that brandy cream doesn’t appear in the shops until early December, and mince pies without brandy cream are just pointless.
could make your own. cream, icing sugar, brandy, mascapone.

Love mince pies, but really only if they're home-made, which are different animals from the bought variety. I enjoy them on their own or with, Adam, brandy BUTTER, which for me is much nicer than cream!
Simply place a small scoop of the brandy butter on top of some mince pies, and pop them in the microwave, for no more than about 15 secs on medium power, and when they come out, the lovely juicy fruit inside is piping hot, and the butter's melted all over the pastry and formed a lovely gooey 'brandy sauce'... Enjoy some with a nice glass of Drambuie... YUM, YUM! :)
In any case, there's nothing stopping you from making your own brandy cream at ANY time of year - don't rely on the shops!!;)
However, I wouldn't thank you for that stuff at this time of the year though, when it's so warm. For me, that's purely a winter thing.

Good god, no. Brandy butter is a slimy, greasy abomination. Brandy cream or a dollop of whipped double cream is the best way to go. On their own is acceptable, I grant you, but this always feels a bit like fish and chips with no salt or vinegar - good, but something's missing!

Our own brandy butter certainly isn't. It's gorgeous! The cream is good too, but it really needs to be made from mascarpone, for it to be worth having.

Yep, that sounds about right. In my defence, it's Friday and the part of my brain that deals with reason has closed for the weekend. Normal service will resume on Monday, though you'll be hard pressed to notice much difference.
Three months out of the country sounds great, but just think of all the things you'll miss:
Halloween, and all the kids doing 'trick or treat'.
Bonfire night, and all the kids doing 'penny for the guy'.
Christmas, and all the kids carol singing at your front door, badly.
Where are you going, it's got to be better than all that.

Barry, post #48 suggested to me that your problem is with the 3 month run-up to Christmas not Christmas itself. So my reply was my cack-handed way of suggesting that sticking around for the run-up (not good) only to be absent for actual Christmas looks like a bit of an anti-climax (though as I write this I realise that much of Christmas is just that anyway).
We will be going to Cameroon in West Africa. A largely Christian country, but they don't go through the nauseous and distasteful commercial build-up to the day itself, that goes on here in the UK.
But you are right, it is very difficult to avoid Christmas altogether. In 2000, I spent Christmas and the New Year in India, but even there the hotels were decked out with Christmas decorations and a "Yo Ho Ho" Santa made an appearance on the day.

Oh don't worry - we will doing that as well! They brew some fine beer there (Moustique, being one such), and quality French wine is surprisingly cheap too. :)

There's two December birthdays in my family, so all talk of Christmas is forbidden until they've been celebrated.
One Christmas Eve a few years back I was in Woolworths buying something boring, and two drunken lads were discussing their Christmas shopping. They both realised they still had loads of presents to buy, when the announcement came over the Tannoy that the shop was about to close. One lad said 'Not to worry, the service station on the M4's open till midnight', and his mate replied 'Yeah, but you're pissed, and I can't drive!'
Lol - that's funny.
It's a mentality I can't relate to though, as I'm a very organised person, and so by Christmas Eve all the food, drink and presents are bought, and I'm usually relaxing in front of the wood burner with a nice glass of malt (and perhaps a mince pie), not running around like a daftee doing last minute shopping!
Del's birthday is on the 13th December, and our wedding anniversary is on the 22nd, with of course Christmas day on the 25th, so December is also a busy month for us.

Because my birthday is 1st January I always do quite well for pressies at that time of year. Unlike when I was a kid, when most gifts were a "combined Christmas and birthday present". That really sucked, and I bet a lot of folk with Christmastime birthdays had to take that crap. :(

No not me. My birthday is a week before Christmas Eve, but my parents always gave me birthday presents on the day and would organise a birthday party for me. :)

Parents always did it right, it the problem was with more distant relatives (aunts and uncles etc.). When I got older things improved greatly - my birthday got me plenty of free drinks from all the people who were celebrating New Years Eve, and I even got a bit of lady action sometimes :D No not really, at least not anything mucky.

Never too soon to start with the mince pies - I could happily eat them any time of year. Although if they were available all the time their appeal would probably be diluted.
As for Christmas puds, they have such a long shelf life you can eat them any time of year (and I have). When human civilisation dies, the only clues that we ever existed will be the pyramids and a few (still edible) Christmas puds.
Never too soon to start with the mince pies - I could happily eat them any time of year. Although if they were available all the time their appeal would probably be diluted.

Oh my God, another job! My physique is better suited to eating Christmas puddings than making them. Unless you or someone else with the time to print out the recipe can show me what a piece of piss they are to make, I'll stick with the old Tesco Finest, and use my free time to sit on the bog and clear a path for it. :)

Yeah I will be working at Christmas and it will be interesting to see who comes up to a hotel.
I suppose its all laid on for them so it makes some sense. The food will be good quality and it saves all the faffing about cooking it themselves.
Im trying to get into the spirit of christmas and I will quite enjoy being part of it at work
Used to end up working one or occasionally both of the holidays. Didnt mind n year but like xmas. N year up here is crap now.

New year's Eve is a bit crap everywhere these days, has been since 2000. Last went out NYE about 5 years ago, all the pubs were dead. Most people seem to have small gatherings or parties at home, and if you lose touch with folk (as I have) you end up spending it on your Bill.
So this year it'll be with a couple of my oldest friends again, and that's fine with me. As my birthday is Jan 1st, I have a few pressies to look forward to. :)
I will see no one as per usual. Can't remember last time I did tbh Bollocks to it

Indeed, that's the thing for me: SMILE and BE HAPPY. I can't stand grumps/misery guts, sorry!:rolleyes: I like cheery people with a positive outlook. That's who I surround myself with, and indeed what I'm used to.
Well, we'll be very much enjoying ourselves, during both Christmas and New Year, celebrating with friends and family, whilst enjoying some fabulous food and great wine/drinkies.
Never been big on rowdy, overcrowded pubs full of drunken idiots, so you won't see me near any such places over the festive period, other than perhaps during the day at the quietest times, when you can get a seat and actually hear the people you're with talking [rather than drowned out in a din].
The rest of the time I'll be in the comfort of my own home, surrounded by everything I need to make the whole experience enjoyable and good fun!:cool:

Funny, we’ve been doing New Year with two other couples for nigh on 12 years now and still love it. We went to a hotel in Scotland owned by our friend’s brothers for the first three years but when that closed we have alternated between hosting since then.
We do at least three nights and each couple makes one full cooked breakfast each. In addition we have a joint savings account between the 6 of us that we each make a monthly payment into during the year, and this covers meals out over New Year plus other weekends away we go on during the year. On New Year’s Eve we stay in and each couple cooks one of the courses.
As a result, I generally look forward to New Year more than Christmas, even though I love Christmas. Well mostly. This year it’s in Mrs. B’s mum’s house.

Funny, we’ve been doing New Year with two other couples for nigh on 12 years now and still love it. We went to a hotel in Scotland owned by our friend’s brothers for the first three years but when that closed we have alternated between hosting since then.
We do at least three nights and each couple makes one full cooked breakfast each. In addition we have a joint savings account between the 6 of us that we each make a monthly payment into during the year, and this covers meals out over New Year plus other weekends away we go on during the year. On New Year’s Eve we stay in and each couple cooks one of the courses.
As a result, I generally look forward to New Year more than Christmas, even though I love Christmas. Well mostly. This year it’s in Mrs. B’s mum’s house.

Now that we have a grandkid knocking about, Mrs. Pony thinks we really ought to put up a tree this year, and the fact that said sprog can't see further than it can projectile vomit won't dissuade her from this madness.
She's already forgotten about the "tree vs. Zu loudspeaker" incident 0f 2016, where the stupidly expensive black gloss finish came off second best. She's also conveniently forgotten about the promised French polishing to deal with the scratches. Would have been me paying for it anyway. :(

First 'Round Robin' arrived today, fascinating to hear where former colleagues spent their holidays and I must admit I'm a bit jealous of the new house with the Aga and hot tub. Delighted that the family achieved a PhD and 115 A's at GCSE taking all the grandkids into account. Sad to hear the dog was run over, but at least the household won't have to suffer her atrocious farts any longer.... I know you're supposed to stop and report these incidents but I was in a terrific hurry...Oops what a give away!

I'm not a food snob, trust me. I'll happily eat in a transport cafe [and indeed have done many times], if the owners are switched on/major on great customer service, have a real passion for what they're doing, and execute it all impeccably:)
What's wrong with Beefeaters? The same thing that's wrong with Brewers Fayres, Wetherspoons, Harvesters, or any other food chains of that ilk: the serving of (at best) mediocre food (which you have to pay for in advance of eating), and which is often not great value, in soulless commercial establishments, completely lacking in individuality, often populated by staff who couldn't give a damn.
It doesn't have to be fancy, but I like eating in small, family-run restaurants (pubs or cafes), which in every sense are the complete antithesis of the above, and if we're referring to Jerry, which there must be plenty of in Gloucester!;)

Can't say I've been in many transport cafes where the owners have a real passion for what they're doing, any more than I see the lorry drivers display a similar passion - unless you mean fitting all the food in their mouth in one go, or passing their 60mph fellow drivers at 61 :(
Totally agree about Brewers Fayre et al, I won't use them and would rather eat somewhere nicer every couple of months than one of those troughs every fortnight.
However, what I can't be doing with is paying good money which I don't have a lot of, to an independent/family run establishment and find the quality of food and service to be below what I consider acceptable. As discussed before I'm not very good at complaining, and would simply not go back there. But that doesn't make the meal you've just shelled out for any better.
Plenty of terrible family run restaurants around (Gordon Ramsey seems to find them everywhere), and plenty of good ones too. And then there are ones that seem good, but then you use them for the next family gathering and this time they're shit (this has happened more than once).

I am sure that you realise that most New Testament scholars have concluded that the birth was sometime in late summer or early autumn, and probably in 6BC to 4BC for that matter. Hence my comment. The adoption of December 25th, the Winter Solstice, as the celebratory date came several centuries after the birth, and was influenced by several factors, only some of them theological. The appropriation of the winter solstice festival date had powerful significance amongst potential converts. I only know this because i too was brought up a Catholic and was educated in religious schools. Even though I had become an aetheist in my mid teens i was still forced to study theology and the history of the early Christian church.

There is a nice place, family run near there called Café René (https://www.caferene.co.uk/). Loads of atmosphere, fairly basic service, very decent 'home cooked' food.
Been there several times and always enjoyed it. Even you might approve, Marco! ;)

That'll all change when you visit a good Les Routiers truckers cafe in France... In terms of discerning and very demanding diners (among ordinary people), your eyes will be opened big time!:eyebrows:
More seriously, then you obviously haven't been around much. There are TONS of places like that all over the country: just good basic cafes/diners, serving all-day breakfasts (and anything with chips), done properly, using good quality ingredients cooked well, in spotlessly clean environments.

I could even mention some superb roadside snack vans I've been to, where I've enjoyed eating no other than home-made venison burgers, whilst sitting outside in the glorious sunshine on one of their tables, in gorgeous scenery overlooking a river, sipping a cup of Earl Grey in a Bone China cup...
It doesn't have to be 'fancy' for someone to own a food establishment of ANY description, and do it well, with passion and LOVE, simply because they're proud of what they do (you did read about how my dad ran his chip shops?) which you won't get in your average Beefeater/Harvesters, etc. Those are the kind of places that will always get my custom, not some soulless commercial food chain.

Sure, but of course I'm talking about the BEST family-run restaurants (seek and ye shall find, do some research, etc) versus ANY commercial restaurant chain. The former will almost always be considerably better. You need to get out and about, and find the good places eat - and when you do, keep going back when you can!
Del and I often just drive out to the country at the weekend, on spec, and see what we can find, in terms of nice places for lunch or dinner, and we've found so many great places that way, which would've otherwise been under our radar.
It's a bit like good new music: you'll unlikely find any, if you buy all your CDs in Asda! I'm not saying you do, but you get my point. The special places are rarely found right under your nose!
In that respect, when was the last time you (or anyone else here) visited an independent record shop (which demonstrates the same passion and love for what they do as a good family-run restaurant), and *physically* sought out some new music?
Well, the same applies with eating out well. You have to put some effort in, and explore outside of the mainstream world, if you want to get the best experiences and sample the truly nice things in life...!;)

Due to financial circumstances in recent years, we don't often get to go out for a drive just for the hell of it - mostly we're heading for a particular destination by the quickest route possible. This usually means the odd stop at a motorway services, and only for a brew. To seek out off-the-beaten-track places would be rather time-consuming, and time is often a commodity in short supply for us.
The Les Routiers thing is definitely something we'll do though, next time we're in France.
Do you have a recommendation for somewhere for lunch in Shrewsbury? I'm going there with Anita on Saturday to find her something nice for her birthday. She's thinking she would like a sapphire ring, so I guess we're going to be trekking round various jeweller's, though how she intends to fit that in as well as visiting the record shops I don't know :D

This usually means the odd stop at a motorway services, and only for a brew. To seek out off-the-beaten-track places would be rather time-consuming, and time is often a commodity in short supply for us.
No worries mate, I get that. It's a bit different for us. plus Del works really hard in a very demanding job, so I like to treat her, by making her weekends as relaxing/stress-free and enjoyable as possible. Plus, being the big left-breast that I am, I enjoy driving the Brabster, especially around the scenic areas near here:D

Due to financial circumstances in recent years, we don't often get to go out for a drive just for the hell of it - mostly we're heading for a particular destination by the quickest route possible. This usually means the odd stop at a motorway services, and only for a brew. To seek out off-the-beaten-track places would be rather time-consuming, and time is often a commodity in short supply for us.
The Les Routiers thing is definitely something we'll do though, next time we're in France.
Do you have a recommendation for somewhere for lunch in Shrewsbury? I'm going there with Anita on Saturday to find her something nice for her birthday. She's thinking she would like a sapphire ring, so I guess we're going to be trekking round various jeweller's, though how she intends to fit that in as well as visiting the record shops I don't know :D

Lol, no worries! Probably the only chance of that then is White Rabbit Records, situated on the top floor of Market Hall. It's a great place for well-priced and carefully selected new and second-hand vinyl (and CDs). You'll 'accidentally bump into' it, simply by exploring the other stalls on the top floor;)
For jewellery, and indeed all sorts of other nice stuff, also check out The Parade shopping centre: https://www.paradeshops.co.uk/ That's also where Cave Records are located: https://www.caverecords.co.uk/ You may be able to 'accidentally find' that too, if you go there looking for other things....
However...... Honestly, if it's nice rings you're after, then Chester rows is your place! However, for more interesting places to do other forms of Christmas shopping, Shrewsbury is *the one*, and the lovely Victorian and Tudor architecture, as seen in Chester, is the same.
Ok, for munchies in Shewsbury, these are the places I'd recommend:
For good quality, great value and unpretentious French food, Bistro Jacques is superb: http://www.bistrojacques-shrewsbury.com/ They do a very good value lunch menu, and it's right next to Market Hall.
For high-quality, smart 'pub grub' in nice comfortable surroundings, then check out Henry Tudor House: http://henrytudorhouse.com/ It excels in every department, and isn't overpriced either for the quality of food (and drink) on offer. It's off to the left of Wyle Cop, down a lane, as you go up the hill from Tanners. We prefer eating in the bar area on the top floor, rather than the more formal restaurant section downstairs.
Down the same lane at the bottom, on the right-hand side is also a very good Spanish restaurant: http://www.casanaranjo.co.uk/ It's family-run and pretty authentic, with very friendly and helpful staff, but can be a bit empty at lunchtimes, and so lacks atmosphere. It might be rather different though, on one of the last Saturdays leading up to Christmas! The tapas, though, are excellent.
For a 'special occasion' lunch, if you want to spoil Anita, but that certainly isn't stupidly expensive, and again is family-run by a husband and wife team, then The Golden Cross is simply enchanting. The lady owner is super into her interior design, and the rather traditional but quirky decor reflects here effervescent personality! A really nice lady who can't do enough to please her customers, and the food is to die for.

At this time of the year, there'll usually be a huge and beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Really nice vibe...

Well that was an enjoyable trip to Shrewsbury. The only bit I wasn't looking forward to was the 'Smart Motorway' upgrade south of Manchester, but sat nav took us onto M56 just before then, As we passed Wrexham (Wrecsam!)* I wound the window down so I could hear if the Take That tour bus (Brabster) was anywhere near, but no sign.
Shrewsbury itself (birthplace of Charles Darwin) is a delightful little town, and for sheer numbers and diversity of its shops and businesses, it easily beats my other favourite town, Keswick. Such that we probably only saw about half of it at best. No joy with the ring-buying, and we got away too late to try Chester, but Mrs. P is in no hurry so she'll keep looking, hopefully while I'm at work!
We managed instead to get a number of smaller gifts and stocking fillers. The shop owners were so helpful and friendly I actually felt a bit guilty about not spending more than we did.
In the market hall I 'discovered' a nice little stall selling secondhand records, called 'White Rabbit'. Anita suggested I have a look in there while she went for a mooch round the other stalls. Result! I could have happily spent an hour or more in there, but didn't want to push my luck. I bought just one record - a minty copy of 'Long May You Run' by Stills/Young for £8. Not heard it since the seventies, so there's a fair chance it'll be crap. But what's Christmas without at least one vinyl regret?
Finished off with a late lunch, first visiting Henry Tudor House, which was so packed we didn't bother and instead called in at the Golden Cross. Pleasant husband and wife team (I assume). The woman's attire was a good match with the décor of the place, ie bizarre to say the least. I would not want to be the one to dust around all that stuff!
Food was excellent, if perhaps a little pricey. I enjoyed my 'Toad in the Hole', but tasting the beer battered haddock Anita was having, I wish I'd gone for that (happens a lot that does).
All in all a nice day, and we will certainly be going back again.
*Here's a question: I assume the Welsh have always called it 'Wrecsam', so why do you suppose the English saw fit to change the spelling?

You are quite correct: there is no 'X' in the Welsh alphabet, and taxi is indeed spelt 'tacsi'.

The Golden Cross was certainly busy when we went in, but there was one vacant table with our name on it (if our name was giant centrepiece covering most of the table!) Everywhere was pretty busy, which is a good thing. I like to think that these little independent places can thrive what with all the online competition.
Didn't get in The Lion - Anita pointed to it and said "what about there?" But it was time to eat and I fancied the Golden Cross. We'll give it a go next time. We parked on the NCP at the bottom of Wyle Cop with no problems.
As for calling in next time we're down that way - that would be great and I will certainly give you a call. I just need to remember it's a landline so best not to text you :)

The pyramid teabags are just as good as the loose stuff (which they're out of at the moment), as they're full of the proper tea, not an inferior version of such. One bag, when properly infused, does three decent-sized cups. The aroma (and flavour) is so intense, that simply opening the airtight packet they come in releases a wonderfully perfumed aroma of cardamom, cinnamon and star anise, almost like you've just opened a jar of pot-pourri!
This stuff is veritably 'Christmas in cup'!
It's funny because I didn't even realise that the company were based in Wrexham... I only found out when I saw their contact number and gave them a bell. I'd originally ordered the loose variety and hadn't received delivery, so when I spoke to someone they explained that they were out of stock, but could supply the same quantity of it in teabags, and would deliver them to me later that day (yesterday).
True to their word, the chap came (driving a C-Class Merc), and spotted the Brabster...:eyebrows: 10 mins later, after talking about cars, as he was a big enthusiast, I found out that they also supply tea to Lot 11, that coffee shop in Wrexham I've mentioned before, and a couple of other places we go to. Plus....since I'm also into coffee, he's going to put me in touch with some local artisan suppliers, which he said are superb!
So all in all, a great experience, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Tea Drop to anyone who enjoys sampling top-quality teas from around the world:cool:

For me, what appeals as much as the shops themselves is the ambience of the architecture, and sitting outside while enjoying a coffee and taking in the surroundings (as well as people watching) is one of my simple pleasures. Some of the buildings around the market square must date back many hundreds of years and its's heartening to see that they are being kept in good order while still keeping their original features.
It would be nice if everyone who is able would get out and use these businesses, as so many towns these days all look the same with the usual suspects on the high street - no wonder people shop online.

It would be nice if everyone who is able would get out and use these businesses, as so many towns these days all look the same with the usual suspects on the high street - no wonder people shop online.
We're in complete agreement there, in all aspects... It's one of the things I like about Shrewsbury: it still has 'soul', and a thriving town centre, full of all sorts of great shops and markets - even though there is a large retail park on the outskirts of the town.
So if they can make it work, with the challenges today of the Internet, why can't other towns manage the same...?:hmm:

I suppose she may be influenced by the gin trend to a degree, but not in the way you might think - she's always been partial to the odd G+T, or vodka, but not in a big way (neither of us drink much at all, I had a pint with my Sunday lunch last week, but I usually have a soft drink).
Her son, who is landlord of a local pub, got a few flavoured gins in earlier this year (by popular request) and got his mum to try some, and rhubarb and ginger was the clear favourite. No doubt she'll tire of it by spring.
As for the online shopping thing, it's sad, but it's just the way things are going. I don't believe the shops themselves create the demand for high streets filled with the same businesses you see everywhere, rather they have been edged out by them. Now that these big chain shops have an online presence the buying public would rather buy online than endure traffic congestion and the difficulty and expense of town centre parking for what has become a rather humdrum and uninspiring shopping experience. Now the big stores are going too.
I don't think for most towns/cities there will be any going back from this. All the more reason to show our support for the few places that are still 'hanging on'.

Ah I see, no worries. understandable then. Aside from a good malt whisky (or some burbon), or the odd cocktail, I'm not really into spirits, neither is Del. Beer, cider, and anything wine-based is our thing:)

Chester is largely the same as Shrewsbury. Although as it's a city, there are more commercial chains, as opposed to privately owned shops, but it's still a vibrant, thriving city, as is York and various other places I could mention, 'oop norf'.
What I've noticed, is that the further south you go in the UK, the worse it gets, in terms of what you're describing, and I have some theories on that.

You were right Geoff, the Stills/Young record turned out not to be crap, in fact better than I remember it. Admittedly when I last played it, it was on my BSR deck with Bush Arena amp and Wharfedale Dentons.
Been over 40 years but I remembered 'Fountainebleu' like it was yesterday. Who said 'never go back?' Some things are always right. :)
I could seek out 'Electric Storm in Hell' by White Noise next, but I have a feeling that WILL be crap.

Ha - I'm with you on all but the last (although the former qualifies as fun)... If you embraced the 21st century and joined Netflix, or such like, downloaded movies and/or installed satellite TV, you'd be able to negate much of said rubbish!:ner:;)

Yep, and I do have a Sony Blu-ray player for them. I do have a VHS player for those tapes that have yet to be replaced on disk; though several of them are as yet unavailable on disk
