Hi,

About a week ago I was given (for free) a pair of TDL Reference Standard TL speakers. Cabinet and grills are in almost pristine condition but all woofers and some of the midrange drivers require replacement (scratching coils) but its been impossible to source replacements either Falcon Acoustics, Wilmslow Audio, or Lockwood Audio. Originally I thought drivers were KEFs B139s and B110s but later found out they were sourced by ELAC, and similar drivers with different impedances are used.

Any advise will be appreciated since I'm not too keen on letting these pair rot in a landfill.

How badly are the woofers scratching? (Flea bite or full on DJ onslaught? :D)

If it isn't a lot try turning the speaker units through 180 degrees to see if there is sag on the suspension.

Walpurgis has used more extreme methods to centralise motor units, maybe he can provide a link to it.

Getting the drivers you have refurbished would seem to be the logical course. I've got a pair of the old TLS50 and they are pretty serious 'speakers. I'd expect those TDLs to be even better so well worth doing of you want some speakers that have loads of power in the bass.

TDL drivers may have been made at Elac to start with, but I'm not sure this was always the case, especially later on.

PLEASE - if you can store the cabinets for now, it'll eventually be to your advantage I think if you can't find proper replacement drivers. I cannot say more right now except to ask you not to give up hope just now ;)

I'm pretty sure some were provided by Celestion/KEF.

Will they do 20Hz? That would require a folded acoustic line of around 13 feet length (assuming output continues into LF roll-off).

Hmm. At what comparative level I wonder. I remember these speakers and they did go deep, but I suspect any output extending that low will be very curtailed. Not that many recordings will have bass that deep on them.

I think I've got a review and measurements of these somewhere.


16Hz will be many dB down I suspect. I'll see if I can dig it out.

Well, after thoughtful analysis, and a two-minute warning from SWMBO I will not continue with the TDL refurbishing project. If anyone is interested please PM. If not, these will go to a landfill by end of month.

Are you in the US? Can you try the DIY audio forum and maybe another US audio forum if anyone knows a good one? These speakers are quite rare and sought after and should not be destroyed.

PR is Puerto Rico I think.
I agree with Lawrence. You won't have too much trouble finding someone who will be interested in them, especially for free. A crime to bin them.
