Hi all,
Whilst have a general look online for a decent copy of this classic album, I found a thread devoted entirely to it on a forum elsewhere.
The idea being floated was that the MoFi version was easily the best of the rereleases bunch.
Has anyone got a copy of it ? What is your assesment of the quality of pressing? etc.
I normally don't mind paying through the nose for a great copy but £40 seemed a bit mad for a single vinyl version.
Cheers.
Tapestry (2x12", Album, Ltd, Num, RE, RM, 180) ORG Music, Epic, Ode Records (2) ORGM-1071, 88725408881 US 2012
this one probably but will likely be same price wise but u get 2 records
or the uk version a bit later
Ode Records (2) – 8843094711, Epic – 8843094711, Legacy – 8843094711, Sony Music – 8843094711 will be good

I have the OED 70 heavyweight re-release and while its a great album it does sound like the master tapes used were less than ideal; a little harsh and sibilant at times and the first song sounds like the tape had stretched with age and had a slight flanger-like effect to it.

Cheers guys, yes Grant, it's not THAT expensive but I'd rather buy right first time.
Primalsea, can't be happy about that phase effect! Maybe I'll just go for it with the MoFi version.
if i remember right, the 1st pressing have distortion in her vocals,i bought a different pressing and they all sounded the same.

I have 3 copies of this record all early copies on A&M (Ode) First Press, Epic (Ode) Green Label first press and finally Epic (Ode) Blue label Third Press (This may be a later repress I am not sure). While I cannot vouch for the two Epic copies as they were bought second hand to try and cure that sibilance problem that existed on my 1971 purchase on A&M. None of them succeeded in curing it, all my copies are similar.
I have never knowingly heard a remaster or a MOFI copy.

Actually the copy I have doesn’t so much have a flanger effect at the beginning of the first track, but more like the volume level pulsates as if there was a slow acting compression. I remembered the issue incorrectly.
Does anyone have it on CD? Would be interesting to see if the CD suffered with the same issue and whether there was a lot of post production work done to solve the issue becuase the problem is with the master tapes, or if the problem is with the pressing tools.

I just called it up on Amazon Music and it does seem that some Eq has been used to cut the high frequencies. There is just a hint of sibilance and the pulsation of the volume has nearly gone.
I suspect it could be a problem with the orginal recording.
not much of a fan of the album myself, a bit dull and the production is a bit scratchy. Never bought it myself An ex girlfriend who bore more than a passing resemblance to young Carole used to have a copy.
The best thing about it is the cat on the cover. He's called Telemachus, (named after the son of Odysseus) which is very cool.
Tapestry is basically a woman's album, as is Bridge Over Troubled Water and anything recorded by Neil Diamond.

such sexism!!
I know. 'Woman's album' indeed.
The correct term is 'Chick music'.
I still say the cat is the best thing about it.

I just don't agree with the "Woman Album" tag,
Good songwriting is in itself something to appreciate and to have such talent as James Taylor doing your backing vocals and guitar riffs just makes it even more appealing. Sure, the lyrics may be from a woman's perspective but a good album is a good album regardless.
Just a shame the recording was shite

And yet is was overseen by Joni Mitchell, whose production is always very good. Probably hobbled it on purpose, afraid of the competition.

Not keen on James Taylor either. American folk has always been a bit dodgy. Not like the British stuff which can at least be bizarre on occasion.

Rated 36th most important album of all time? Does that help?

Not really. You don't get to choose which music you like. Anyway The White Stripes are on that list, totally destroying its credibility. There's probably loads of other rubbish on it too that I don't remember right now.

Tapestry - truly a great album. Maybe it's my age, it's certainly not my gender!

Did someone just call it a Seminal Album?!
Yes, the White Stripes are shite. My opinion of course lol.
Of course The White Stripes are "shite", but I used to admire them for their enthusiasm. Shame they split up, because Jack White has gone on to do far worse - now that is complete and utter crap! (IMO ;))

Lol, my comment was partially tongue in cheek mate, due to the thread BUT I'm no fan. I remember them being labelled as a cross between Jimi Hendrix and some other legend and being left totally underwhelmed at their offerings.

Fortunately, by sound of things, I can say with pride that Ive not heard of them.

You have, bloke and his sister, sister plays the drums. Thought that you don't need a bass player. Thought wrong.

For those who enjoy Tapestry I suggest Live in Hyde Park. I have the CD with Blu Ray. It's excellent, she was 74 when this was recorded and she still had the voice. It's amazing when you look at what she's been involved over the years. Really quite prolific.

I really like the album and the follow up Music.
This LP always reminds me of my mum I have a very early memory about 3 years old and sitting on her lap whilst she sang So Far Away. There where quite a few of us kids so that moment was quite unique and so I do love that song.
I have an early UK pressing and also the Mobile Fidelity which I bought with a bent corner for a tenner.
Just thought I would add an excellent live version of tapestry. Live in Hyde park on double vinyl.

Think I saw this on Sky Arts about a year ago. Excellent production, and made me feel all warm and fuzzy. :)
