View Full Version : Any metal detectorists on here?

I may need some advice.
It seems that the little one has thrown the wife’s wedding ring into the garden from the terrace.

It’s a platinum ring, so I am thinking of renting/buying a metal detector to find it, as a manual search has so far drawn a blank. As such, I am looking for recommendations on what to get.

I have someone coming round tomorrow to have a look for it with a detector, but he won’t be as willing as me go spend a lot of time looking for it.

It's probably not gone far. Little kiddies can't throw hard and tend to chuck things straight ahead rather than to the side.

The guy who came round this morning found it.
He only wanted €20 for his troubles and would not accept more.

Great result! - Do you think he would search Loch Lomond for the ring my wife lost there in 1976 - I mean we were only paddling near the edge, it's not as if we were on a boat or anything....

Good result, Kev. I'm pleased for you. Next time though, keep things like that either safely locked away, or preferably on the finger of the owner!;)

Lol - with toddlers around, you can never be too careful!;)

Anyway, glad the ring's been found, and full marks to the bloke who found it. His actions help restore your faith in human nature.

might have the opportunity to search a field where some Roman and Saxon stuff has been found in the past so I'm looking to get a detector but I know absolutely nothing about them.

if not what is any good? Needs to be able to do ferrous and non-ferrous.

they are rated highly in this level at least. that one does most of what you'll ever need and will be enough to see if you want to go further. fancy pro ones can cost a lot of money so you either need to be rich or doing it for a living and near 10k lol
if i was getting one it would likely be that

A couple of weeks ago I saw a programme where a couple were having a go with a metal detector round Normandy. He was detecting, she was digging. Which is how it should be. But their first attempts:

Hubby: [bleep] Dig there!
Wifie: Just a nail.
Hubby: [Bleep bleep bleep]
Wifie: We have something big here!
Hubby: It's your spade! Move your spade :doh:

I suppose it all takes practice.

yeah I don't want to go mad. It's only one field, although it's quite big. Won't be until late summer if it happens.

I've got a smallish detector, think it's a Maplins job. Kiddie size really from boot sale, but it works, won't be discriminating though. Detects down to about nine inches as I recall. I intended to try it on Cornish beaches with a Crown Land permit (free). Not got around to that yet :).

Martin, I'm sure Anita's lad has one, which he hasn't used for years iirc. If so I can borrow it for you, so you can get an idea what level of quality detector you'll want, and see whether it's something you want to do. I could bring it over next Saturday.

Thanks, but don't worry about it. I won't have need until late August at the earliest, and it might not happen at all.
