Buddha, STANDARD! Keith Lemon! Seriously interested in this, can you tell me a little more about the Marantz? I've been looking into getting some of the vintage marantz gear.

Mate you have to hear this , I’ve owned the pm4 before and stupidly let it go and I loved it then with some ns1000’s and too many others to remember.
Then I got the JR149’s and something told me that the pm4 would go well with them then low and behold one pops up for sale ( I grab it )and boy was I right ( for a change)
I’ve had some real nice Hifi in the past and still do but this ... this is it for me [emoji3][emoji3][emoji3]

I’ll be hooking up my newly acquired technics sl-1210 mk2 tomorrow as soon as I can buy some vinyl, can’t wait for that but kinda hope it won’t be good as I really need to let the tt go.

My ultimate marantz purchase would be a pair of Model 7 monoblocks or the Model 7T preamp

I can only dream of that kind of equipment. I am thinking about a pm5 I’ve been offered but then there’s also a pm6a lurking about in a far distant land with my name on it [emoji51]

The Marantz looks gorgeous, I love vintage Marantz, I've got an early eighties cassette deck and after a good service and new belts is still sounds great although it doesn't get much use now.

Be interested to see a nudie of the marantz, have the caps been upgraded? Worth checking out with any vintage class a amp.

Hi Lawrence, I’ve just put all back together and forgot the bloody photo [emoji35]
But I can tell you that it’s totally original and untouched ( like my other one )
No ugly stuff around the caps just a lot of dust .
Nice and clean on the exterior now too.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180521/8003d78b6e0e00e811a93146ae712d22.jpg

Hi Paul, yes I run it constantly in class A , gets nice and hot too. The sound this produces beats everything I’ve ever owned.

I am going to recap it though Lawrence either way , just need to get a schematic as the writing on them is difficult to see and I’ve read that Marantz did use different components in these .

the magic your hearing could come from the vintage components. Be very careful, you might change the thing you love into the thing you hate.

I agree mate and of course it’s a case when not if they fail so I will change all the caps initially then go from there .

Andy: I've never been so happy. So I'm going to change it.

What could go wrong?
If t'were me I'd be wary, and be able to reverse the changes if the magic fled.

That’s the catch eh ? I mean what actually happens if the caps or whatever suddenly fails? Surely it’s not going to blow the speakers... besides better to have experienced bliss for a short period than to never have tried , life is too short to procrastinate [emoji3]

inspect and test the caps. if ok then leave them.

A lot of the old Japanese gear have really high quality capacitors in them. I'd be quite surprised if a recap was necessary. Might just be something you want to do and that's ok, just pick a good a capacitor as you can find for each replacement.

Hi Grant , well I did only collect it yesterday, had a little tinker and cleaned it internally put a few things right and I’ve had it running in class constantly from around 5pm yesterday and so far ( early days ) it hasn’t skipped a beat so I’ll just carry on enjoying it.
Funny enough over 30 years of enjoying Hifi the only items I’ve had repair issues with were relatively new [emoji848]

Whilst on the subject does anyone on here has a schematic of this ?
A copy of an owners manual would be much appreciated too.
I have seen chats on another site about this amp but I’ve no clue how to message members on there.

I think these are the schems for the Phono / Volume board and Power Amp section.

You wil probably need to play about with them in an editing program before printing them.

What issue ?? [emoji51][emoji51] Balance was all the way around to the left and there were lose unsecured bits including a board at the front , screws in the wrong place all which I have now rectified and it’s been singing endlessly since Sunday evening without missing a beat.
Tried to add a video of it but I’m unable to [emoji20]

Well it will need the caps doing as they are original.
But I’m enjoying it for now.
