Read in a UK HIFI mag that Metaxas have plans to produce a small amount of portable GQT recorders based on the Stellovox SM8
Not much info on the designers web site but there are some pictures of the design below scroll down to page 14 and below

I believe that the making price is Eur 35k, which is quite reasonable for a high end portable R2R. There are many TTs which cost more than that and the engineering for a top class tape transport is far more technically challenging and expensive to implement well. I gather that it uses a lot of Stellavox components on the transport, but I have no idea about the electronics.

BTW it looks stunning!

Nope do not like those designs at all, all over the top for over the top sake, even if I had the cash I would not buy.

I'll stick with my Nagra IV-S, though I will acknowledge the Stellavox machines were a better design in some areas (the engineers were all ex-Nagra, so that obviously helped.)

The travesty shown is not a portable machine in the normally accepted sense, and I doubt it would last five minutes in professional use.

I think it looks pretty... It's original and not a horrid 'retro' redo thankfully. But not for that price it's bonkers.

I'm in the market for another machine... But it won't be one of those.

Let's have a look ...

Wow.
Distinctive!
Definitely a work of art as well as electronics, and so subject to personal taste.
The whole Metaxas hifi range is equally spectacular / horrific (delete as appropriate).
Not sure I could take a roomfull of that.

'The proof of the pudding' etc ...

If the radical ergonomics lead to a more usable machine then I see no reason to be blinded other than prejudice against unconventional design approaches.
So it ain't the usual boxy box - big deal, if it does the job it gets my vote.
(although not my pennies - don't have enough to even think about it :( )

Also, having it open under where the reels are situated it feels like it would be easier to use.

Its certainly an interesting approach.

Kostas is an interesting guy to talk to, and the recordings he's made on his own Stellovox machines sound stunning, but I'm afraid I'd never give any of his kit houseroom.

Way too OTT for my taste.

(and I couldn't afford them either). :)
