Paypal: how to get the money back from the wrong address

Just did something truly stupid, mixed hotmail with gmail and sent money to a wrong one as gift.

Is there anything to be done to recover it even if a recipient refuses to do so?

it might be that the address you sent it to doesnt exist. if thats the case it should just bounce back. otherwise, you will have to take it up with paypal and your bank.

strangely the address does exist, that's why i didn't notice a mistake before a seller told me he didn't get the funds

however good news meanwhile, the new recipient didn't collect the payment so we cancelled it. huh!

good. it happened with me. not sure if i was sending or receiving... the address didnt exist and it came back.

It always pays, folks, to CHECK things thoroughly, BEFORE clicking the 'send' button - especially when there's money involved!;)

I always copy and paste the email off the message onto my paypal app, it's the safest way.

I know that the payment goes into limbo if the address does not exist/not linked and can just be taken back at any time by the sender.

I dont know what would happen if the address existed and they had paypal linked to that address....could be awkward in that situation.

I have sent people direct payments on paypal but not for large amounts. Im not generally comfortable with the direct sending but it has been ok for me in the past. Im always quadruple checking the address typing.

I prefer it linked to an ebay transaction but I have sent direct paypal top ups to them when I have received a lovely item or they are out of pocket on posting the item. It is a handy way of transferring money fast. I would rarely gift it and try and link it to goods and services

I think Paypal would always help us with a genuine mistake. There are some real balloons out there that wouldnt return the money without third party involvement.

Indeed... Be *thorough* and check things properly before clicking that 'send' button, and avoid behaving like a daftee... There's really no excuse. It's a bit like putting the wrong fuel in your car (diesel instead of petrol, or vice versa)!:doh:

Too many folks these days don't concentrate properly on what they're doing (the immediate job in hand), are easily distracted, and seem to walk around in a permanently dazed stupor....
