Impulse speakers

I have apair of impulse h2 speakers,on these the bass horn vents from the bottom which is raised on some spikes,probably about one and threequarters of an inch.My question to the panel is if I increase this distance will the bass be reduced or increased?

Should be increased! Try to listen to them with the front baffle facing the wall, you will be amazed. This is how one of the top hi-fi reviewer use them. They are great speakers.

DSJR has the definitive answer because he heard them in situ. I believe they were on a lower mezzanine floor than the listener and facing patio windows. They had all wadding removed. IIRC. A very strange way to listen I would imagine...:scratch:

A friend of mine uses Impulse H2 horn speakers. I'm doubtful that raising them would be a good idea (not unless you have a hard bare floor), however I can tell you that they do sound pretty good when heard from the rear.

They are the only speakers that have had me literally leap from my seat with a huge dynamic swing. The beginining of a drum pattern on a track that I thought had finished.
It was the closest thing I've ever heard to the impact of a real drum kit coming out of a hi-fi.

Though they did some things I wasn't so keen on, they were incredibly impressive in their own way.

Jimmy Hughes room had a large half circle window at one end, and yes, it was a two level listening room. The person(s) would be seated in the upper level (along with most of the kit placed on the right hand side) and the H1's (he owned H1's not H2's) were located towards the far end reversed and toed in by about 20%....He also had tweaked the crossover and added subs to the mix - DSJR can supply the sonic info cos I've never heard that system...or indeed stepped into the room in question...

I believe the replacements for the H2's had some sort of plate affair going on under the bass horn (if it can be called that) so that the mouth / gap would always be constant whatever surface they were placed upon when spiked into said surface.

I first heard these at an audio show in Buxton, Derbyshire in the early '90's, ive never ever been impressed since with any speaker than i was then with the 'H2' back then

Try getting a listen to a pair of Kevin Scott's Air Partner horn speakers if you can (not sure if he still has an old pair around....probably the new ones are a further step up, both in sonics and price tag!) those things made the H2's sound like a pair of Wharfedale Diamonds in dynamic terms....and I have the greatest respect for both the Diamonds and H2's....

Yep.

I actually did try, but the sound quality was quite good on this one

I remember drooling over those Air Horn Partners when they came out and were reviewed in the mags.Never heard a pair,though I'd love to.
