I’m looking to refoam my vintage AR 8 BX speakers. The cheapest kit I can see on eBay is around £27 delivered from America. Are there any cheaper alternatives? The drivers are 6.5 inches.

Are sure It's a 6.5" woofer? I thought the AR8BX was 8" - Speaker-repairs.co.uk look a bit cheaper - LINK for 8" foams (http://www.ekmpowershop25.com/ekmps/shops/speakerrepairs/acoustic-research-8-inch-refoam-kit-47-p.asp)

I just measured again and they are 6.5. They are definitely in need of renewing ;-)

Do you think they are beyond repair? I got them for the kitchen but didn’t check under the grills.

The cone shown is OK. What looks like a split is a loose piece of foam surround hanging down, had me wondering at first.

Loads of sellers on ebay. Cheap surrounds from China here. Even those on sale in UK are probably Chinese made. Just check dimensions and profile carefully.

Decades ago (so it feels) and long before the Chinese did refoam kits I got a pair of 8BXs refoamed by Wembley Speakers. Speakers still doing sterling duties and I'm always amazed at the SQ of these speakers which are usually panned as being mediocre budget items. Loads of detail and coherence. Not big and bouncy though. :)

The size you'd require look to be about 7 Euro each, but I would also add in the cost of replacement dust caps so you can remove the old ones and shim the voice coil.
