My Audio Design - Silver Cables Review (Interconnect & Speaker Cable)

The use of silver as a conductor foraudio cables goes back quite a long way. It was being offered commercially as far back as the late ‘70s – possibly earlier. Yet there have always been doubts. Some listeners ‘like’ silver, others don’t.

The usual complaint is that silver cables sound bright and harsh. My Audio Design opts for very high 99.9997% ultra-purity silver. This is about as good as it gets – a purity level of 99.99997% would be achievable – but at a huge increase in price (it’s the kind of silver NASA uses).

The range of silver interconnects from MAD consists of the entry-level My Pleasure, followed by My Sweety, Diamond Signature, and My Queen, which is also available as a loudspeaker cable. MAD cables are sold on a 30 day
no-obligation trial basis, allowing you ample time to reach a decision regarding their worth. This is a good thing, because some of them are worth a lot of money!

My Pleasure

Is the entry-level cable, and is all-silver. It costs £288 for a 0.5m run. It produces a clear, focused, solid sound that’s free of HF hash and nasties. While I did think the more expensive MAD cables had the edge, My Pleasure proved very very good.

My Sweety

This is MAD’s middle range cable. It costs £459 for a 0.5m run, and consists of 4 x 0.4mm Diamond-Die Super-Pure Litz Silver conductors of 99.997% purity. Construction is Quadcross Golden Section, with Constant Q Crossfield. Each cable is terminated with Cardas Rhodium over Silver-Plated RCA connectors, using Cardas Tri Eutectic Copper/Silver solder.

My Sweety has a lovely open pure sort of quality that sounds crisp and tactile, yet free from tonal hardness and ‘grain’. It’s well-balanced and very clean, yet with a nicely spacious ‘airy’ top end and clear bass, and seems more refined than My Pleasure.

My Diamond Signature

Sits near the top of the range, and costs around £517 for a 0.5m stereo pair. Specifications are similar to My Sweety, except slightly thicker 4 x 0.6mm conductors of 99.9997% ultra-purity are employed. Can you hear 0.001% purity?

Where My Sweety has a bigger ‘airier’ sort of presentation, while My Diamond Signature is a touch less glossy and glamorous, but sounds even cleaner and more solidly focused.

My Queen

Is the top cable in MAD’s Silver Series. It costs around £1,494 for a 0.5m stereo pair. The manufacturer claims it’s as good as any current high-end interconnect. My Queen produced an impressively refined yet tactile sort of sound that had presence allied to a gorgeous transparent purity.

My Queen seemed effortless detailed and crisp, while at the same time sounding smooth and clean. We’re getting into Diminishing Returns territory here, but there were definite gains in purity and refinement.
My Queen is also available as a speaker cable, and costs £2,241 for a 1m stereo run. This increases to £3,735 for a 2m run, and £5,228 for 3m. I need 10m runs for my speakers, which puts us into the region of nearly £18k! But I was still able to sample the 2m cable sent for review.

As with the MAD silver interconnects, My Queen speaker cable proved to be very very good – sonically, more of the same; increased transparency and greater purity, with increased definition and superior fine detail over the similar length of expensive high-quality copper cable I’d been using.

"My Queen" sounding detailed and crisp, yet smooth and clean..... :D

Oh Jimmy, I honestly thought marriage and older age would have mellowed him a bit (JMH must be 60 by now), but obviously it hasn't....

Some of those cables are hugely costly ... Especially by comparison to the speakers ... What's the deal with that?
I'm not just picking... I'm genuinly interested, is the mark up percentage that is made the same on those speakers as the cables ... If so are the speakers made out of inexpensive bits or the cables made of very expensive bits? I'm guessing the answers are likely to be fairly secret... I'm just intrigued.
As I said, I'm not trying to pick... I'm just interested! I have always wondered just how valuable expensive cableing is worth in terms of raw materials...

I'm not knocking the cables, I've never heard them, but isn't the review kind of worthless without comparisons with other established and well regarded products (VDH, Cardas, Kimber, Mark Grant, etc)?

"The world best silver ic and speakers cable". Did I miss the vote?

Guys,

Whilst your comments are (usually) always welcome, please remember that this area of the forum is for our trade members to advertise their products without 'interruption', as it were, compared to how it is throughout the rest of the forum.

Therefore I must insist that comments from non-trade members here are restricted to genuine sales enquiries about the products advertised, and nothing else.

If you wish to 'challenge' a manufacturer, dealer or anyone else on specific areas of their product range, then please start a separate thread elsewhere in the relevant section.

Thanks in advance :)

Marco.

There were A-B comparsion against Audio Quest Niagra and MG at the MAD dinner party in October 2009, the Diamond Signature outperformed the other two in every aspect. However, it was not fair to compare with MG as the price tag of the Diamond Signature is 8 times higher. But the Audio quest Niagra doubled the price of the Diamond Signature (£1200) but it performed really really badly, people said the MG sounded even better than the Niagra. Marco, John, Barryhunt, Dave C and Alex were there that night!

David Price first reviewed the Diamond Signature in Hi Fi World - September 2009 He said:
''This is certainly a distinctive sounding interconnect, possessing one of the most open and accurate top ends I’ve heard at almost any price. Duran Duran’s ‘Lonely in Your Nightmare’ is a fussy pop production, full of early eighties studio trickery, yet the MAD cable cut through it like a hot knife cut through butter, making my current mid-price reference cable, the Missing Link Link Cryo Reference interconnect actually sound quite diffuse.''

Before every products launch, we test them with again similar price tag products in the market before we price them. These tests were conducted by professional musicians. So the answer of your question above is 'for sure we are far superior than other products within the same price tag.' You are more than welcome to buy and try them 30 days risk free. Our customers feedback also confirmed the musician's findings.

Your Diamond Signature cable arrives this morning. Although it's only had 8 hours to 'burn in', it is already very apparent that this is an exceptional cable. I've auditioned several silver cables in the past- these include Kimber KCAG, Stereovox, Neotech and the Cryo Reference from Missing Link- all fabulous cables in their own right but I've never been impressed enough overall to keep them. Sure, they've all sounded detailed and transparent with impressive high frequency reproduction but they all appealed to the intellect rather than the emotion of the music- consequently I've always gone back to copper cables- preferring it's warmth but missing that lovely 'hear through' character of silver.

It strikes me vividly that the Diamond Signature does everything that a silver cable should do but without sacrificing that all important visceral quality of good copper cables. It is, without doubt, the best silver cable I have heard.

"I found the sweety XLR to be very similair to the MIT shogun cable it replaced. A very open and natural sound with plenty of detail. I felt the cable to be uncoloured and it's delivery unforced. I was surprised because the cost was £700 less expensive and I certainly expected to prefer the MIT, goood value is very important in HiFi and these cables are outstanding value"

Moreover, the owner of Progressive Audio had compared the Diamond Signature against Audio Note, Siltech and LFD Silver, the Diamond Signature was the most well balanced and all rounded cable, we are the most moderate priced one as well.

I think the experience of all the above mentioned had firmly confirmed the MAD stuffs are very different to other commercial products in many ways.

Both the speakers and the cables use only best material, the cables are a sub-product out of the MAD Loudspeakers, we tested almost 300 different kind of conductors for internal wiring and decided to use what we are using, as well as refine our own silver conductors. We don't mark up as much as some other well established companies, that's why our customers and reviewer found our products are much better value than most stuffs at similar or even many times of its price tag. For instance the MyClapton Loudspeakers, it is £1388 but outperformed the 13k Audio Acoustic by far! Everything we sell are well worth the money.

Perhaps you should suggest some hi-fi mags to run a group test. We conducted our own with pro musicians before we price ours. I think it is not fair that you to discredit the hard work of someone like Jimmy Hughes and David Price. They don't listen to these cables for only five seconds, they listened to them extensively before they write the reviews, they do know what they are talking about!

The Audionote Sootto's would be my choice if $ was no issue but even the Sogons are pretty awsome haveing compaired them with the cables I use I liked the single ended silver in air and teflon very high putity silver.............

Thanks for your message, we never a & b compare it with the Sogons, but one dealer told us that he compared ours against some very expensive Siltech, Audio Note & LFD, our one sounded the most well balanced and not sounded just like silver. Our customers confirmed the same as well.

We don't have a huge marketing expenditure like some big boys, so we still can keep our price much lower than others.

In the late 70's and early 80's cables where hard to sell, wire is wire then,Hosda and Monster where the only game in town here in the states so the object was to get people into trying better interconects and it worked .In a huge way everyone selling high end interconects owes a huge debt to the head monster (Noel Lee)for educateing people,My first sets of good inter connects where Monster.
