I removed the horrible din plugs ( why build an iconic speaker then stick shitty din plugs ?? )

The grain looks a bit too even for oak to me. Could be beech or mahogany.

Well I can’t say that I’m blown away , I have them hooked up to my second system where I was happily using my coles nimbus and I must say the Coles sounded better to my ears which makes me think well how can they sound better with all the expert engineering that’s gone into the jr149’s ?
Then I listen to my Meridian m2’s and they’re in a different league completely! I guess like some say “ as long as you enjoy them “ .
I have had the Jr’s on all morning now and they are growing on me .

They need a very beefy amplifier to get the best from them, 100w+ Is a minimum. Don't be fooled by the suggested wattage needed to drive them. They need to be about 12" away from the side of wall, slightly intoed and I'd suggested 12-18" of the ground from a sitting position. Recapping will bring more benefits but then you loose the originality. There are other tweaks but you would then loose what your falling in love with. Horses for courses!

Hi Andrew, I have 100wpc going up them with a damping factor of 200 , unfortunately I don’t have the space in our little room to get them a foot from the wall but I must say I am enjoying them more and more , they certainly don’t have the box sound ( boxy sound ) of the Coles and the soundstage is excellent, at first I thought they were too bright but my ears seem to have adjusted. Yeah they’re enjoyable.

I'd be careful with 100W/ channel. In 1976 I bought a Quad 405 new. This was the first 'powerful' amplifier that I had. Connected to my home made Colloms Mini Monitors (KEF B200, Celestion HF1300, KEF T27), it was not long before I wound the volume up a bit, sound level did not seem that loud (speakers not very efficient), and one B200 burnt out, the other still worked, but was a bit cooked. I had both B200's rebuilt by KEF. The B100 uses the same voice coil as the B110

I have two pairs of JR 149's, their the second version, gold label, fuses on crossover, not bad speakers, better bass than my Chartwell LS3/5a, mid perhaps slightly inferior, but still good.

I’m slightly confused about the label thing ?
I’ve read that there is a gold label and a red label and confusingly gold logo is also mentioned!
Mine are clearly mk1’s , when they say red label do they mean the sticker on the base or the jr logo ?

Mine have a gold JR logo on the black bass, I understand that the earlier version has this in red.

One pair of my 149's have red leather inlay in the tops.

That’s the confusing bit , mine are the earliest version ( I believe) no fuse ! But have the gold logo on the black base which has the red sticker on the underside.
Oh well I’m understanding all the hype now and loving them .

Definitely teak. Everything was teak in 1975!

Looking at the crossover, you’d do well to replace the capacitors, especially those black and red ones. After forty years they will have drifted well away from their original values.

Hi Shane, I hear what you’re saying about the caps though I’ve had this discussion on here before about replacing capacitors and people’s thoughts are very different plus having researched about replacing the caps on these I’m very inclined to leave well alone !! Especially as they sound bloody good to me .
Having owned many speakers over the years I have only changed one set of capacitors ( Ditton 44’s ) because they were clearly faulty, I have a bit of an ocd thing about leaving things totally original.

I would suggest checking the capacitors, reversible electrolytics can rise appreciably in capacitance with age. This could possibly lead to blowing a tweeter. However, I have not yet checked the capacitors in my two pairs of 149's.

A component tester is a way to do it, around £10 on ebay, in some cases the capacitors have to be disconnected so other parts of the circuit does not influence the readings.

Possibly the easiest thing to do is replace the capacitors, Falcon, I believe do a kit.
