Brian I don't think anyone on here will have a WE 396A.
Fancy a Sylvania 5670 Gold Brand?
just fitted the tesla i got from jerry, and did the jumper mod. sounds good so far.

Then again I replaced most of the dodgy no name Chinese Caps as well...
I'd be interested to know what other tubes people have used.
I saw mention of a Reflecktor tube but I can't find any links?

Thanks Tony . The Reflektor does sound markedly better than the supplied valve , however , the Western Electric 396A valve is easily the best I've heard in the XS DAC .
Here you go mate https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-new-old-stock-Reflektor-6N3P-E-5670-equivalent-double-triode-valves-tubes-/382387181898
currently got a tesla in mine. quite good

It's not too expensive to try different valves in the XS DAC as long as you don't have to import them from America ;)
Whew, not cheap are they!
Is the Reflektor tube a 6N3P-E?
I love the sound of Russian tubes, I might try one or maybe look for the 396A

Hah ! Not far off the truth Grant
I'm gonna try a Reflektor 6N3P-E, I got 2 for £6 on ebay.
I've always liked Reflektor/Voshkod tubes. They always seem to have a detailed, dynamic yet unforced quality to them.
Good luck with the quest for the WE
It's not too expensive to try different valves in the XS DAC as long as you don't have to import them from America ;)The really annoying thing is that the US has the world's best valve inventory.
BTW you can buy ECC88/6922 to 6N3 sockets on eBay but I haven't checked there is sufficient internal space for it in the DAC.
