Whist waiting for the Germans to mill out the plate, we did a trial run for height, so not screwed in, or in the right place, but loooook!!

Hi Dave

That's a serious piece of engineering ' it looks almost made for the Techie .

Bet you can't wait to hear it ' Martin's going to be drooling for sure when he see's this;)

Looks fantastic, Dave, but what we (especially Martin) really want to know is how it SOUNDS - particularly in comparison to the Jelco SA-250 Martin's been using up until now! :)

Incidentally, the LH-18 headshell will have WAY too much mass for the (AT120E or AT-440 MLA cartridge) you've strapped on it.... Try popping on a DL-103 (which will love the high-mass) for some real audio nirvana ;)

Marco.

MartinT
21-03-2010, 13:53
That's looking nice, Dave. By trial plate, is it cut for a Rega or something? In which case I can understand it being in the wrong place as the effective length is different I believe.

It's going to look even better on my black 1210.

I doubt you can get a handle on its sound yet, can you?

Marco
21-03-2010, 13:59
Martin,

What Dave probably means is that the plate he's using at the moment isn't the proper nice one from Germany you'll be getting, but rather a metal sample that's been made to allow the arm to be fitted to the T/T temporarily (still using the correct geometry)... Dave can correct me if I'm wrong :)

Regarding the sound - yeah sure, but some thoughts on his first impressions would be good!

Marco.

It does indeed. I'd love to see what it looks like on an SP-10. Now THAT would be pure audio porn. :stalks:

This arm scares me!! will my new 11.5lb platter be able to hold up it's weight???
But seriously how much does it weigh? It looks very heavy when compared with all the accepted criteria.

MartinT
22-03-2010, 07:22
It weighs 1.3kg. On a non-suspended deck, that should be no problem at all.

It obviously isn't as Dynavector themselves offer it on modded WT Amadeus:-

Yes, yes, I know it's how it sounds that counts but I have lusted after one of these since the age of <20 and I'm excited! :)

MartinT

Is it any heavier than some of the high mass arms of old such as the Fidelity Research FR64?

Whats that suppose to mean?

DSJR
22-03-2010, 20:29
Andre, don't.... ;)

The arm is several generations on from the rather poor performing model tested by Martin Colloms in the eighties - as I was forcibly reminded a few weeks ago.

The arm looks interesting and very strange too. That in itself will get a positive reaction. Perhaps that's all it needs. I await the results with genuine interest. the rest of us can lust after a Jelco 750...

Andre. Having met Dave I now know that his tongue is very firmly in cheek most of the time so try not to take things personally. I know how easily things can come across the wrong way when typed rather than spoken. :grouphug:

I can't understand why people are questioning martins decision to get this arm, from what I have read he has always wanted one and he realised a dream .. It might be a match made in heaven! Why not find out how well it works before raining on his parade? He is obviously very pleased with his choice so far and let's face it if anyone will make it work it's going to be the one person in this country who probably knows the most about the 1210! I haven't met dave, but have spoken to him on the phone numerous times - his advice has been solid to the point of detrimental to his profit margins! Give the guys a chance... I'm sure martins wieghed up the chances of something not being perfect before
he bought his dream bit of hifi!
Just my 2c ... I for one am fasinated by this project, and would love the oportunity to own something so individual!!

Don't worry, Hamish. I've heard the DV-501, DV-505 and DV-507II on several occasions and I know it's a good sounding arm. The only proviso is that it likes a solid deck such as the Techie as it's really too heavy for most suspended designs.

There is a certain 'rightness' about its engineering design and the bi-axial geometry. You can just look at it and see where Dynavector are coming from. Yes, it's a gantry of an arm with further damping when tracking the groove horizontally (but that's a gradual movement), but there is very little mass to shift when tracking warps vertically. Thus its reputation for good tracking in general and compatibility across a wide spectrum of cartridges.

It plays music with a certain 'rightness' but without the edginess of some arms that enhance the perception of detail without there actually being any more.

Just poped on to put my 2 Cent before i dissapear for good, but thats another matter.

As the aboveis obviously aimed at me. For your information & Cawleys..I used to have the original version of Martins arm yonks ago, & i can't really see much of a difference with the Mk.II tbh! I had this fitted to four turntables & was only happy with one partnership. The reason for my original remark was that one of the turntables was the early '70's Technics 'SL110' (A better TT than the '1210' IMHO) didnt sound right, the best out of the four was the Luxman 'PD300'..Doesnt take a brain surgeon to work out why it was better match. Sorry Dave but i don't base findings around reviews.

Guys, if you read this thread carefully, all those actually qualified to express an opinion, are all for the Dynavector!

Personally I think that any design with the kind of history of the Dynavector, which is still around after all these years AND commanding a price which makes and SME Series V look like a bargain, MUST be worthy of serious respect.

It would take a braver man than I and one with recent personal experience to start casting aspersions....

Barry
24-03-2010, 23:37
Would tend to agree with all of the protagonists above. I've always wanted to try the (then) 505 with an EMT. My only reservations (apart from price) has been the short, vertical moving, arm stub. Doesn't it exacerbate warp wow? (For us mere mortals who have less than perfectly flat records)

Regards

MartinT
25-03-2010, 07:18
It actually handles warps very well since the stub arm has very low mass. What you would expect to hear is that there would be effects as a result of the stylus rake angle changing by more than a standard long arm. In reality, it doesn't seem to be noticeable.

DSJR
25-03-2010, 07:47
It'll be interesting to see what the listeners think of low-bass reproduction as the horizontal inertia is so high. I have actually heard it's ancestor several times and haven't based my opinions "just" on reading a review - OK?

I await the results (on a modern system) with interest!

I'm driving down to Dartmouth tomorrow with my Technics deck for the Dynavector to be fitted. Because I have an early arm plate this will represent a plate upgrade too, the new style from the German company.

I'm not sure how much we'll be able to evaluate down at Sound Hi-Fi due to Dave's cat chewing his tweeters. Hopefully he has a spare pair of speakers?!

I salute the Jelco SA-250ST as a damn fine arm, one that has given me a great deal of pleasure. I am sure Hamish (who will be there tomorrow too) will enjoy it very much.

Hi Martin

I would say you are to be saluted ' for going for this Beast of an arm ' and pushing the Techie 1210 to its limit , i mean up to now the SME V has been the most high end arm fitted ? .

I am sure its going to be a revelation for you ' hope it go's well:)
