I had the A3Cr pre and power combo (bought in 2001). It was very well put together and quite powerful. I used it to drive a pair of MG12 speakers.

I am not sure what you are expecting to pay for the integrated A3 amp but I would be looking at something different nearly 20 years on. IIRC the pre/power combo was quite a bit more powerful than the integrated but it was not the most dynamic or detailed of designs.

I would say the pre-amp section was the stronger part of the set up. I know it weighed a lot.

Hi Geoff...

I used to own the X-A1 and loved Musical Fidelity....

I’m not going to give my hand away on price (sorry if that’s not usual in these forum but I’m used to eBay where stuff can go far too high!), but don’t let that put anyone off, please get in touch!

I would like to eventually get the A3cr Power section to drive a pair of Dynaudio Audience 72 se speakers.

I like all these components and I like the prices they go for I can’t afford to buy new so I’m pitching where my knowledge is and where I know I can put together a great sounding balanced system...

Eventually I want a Musical Fidelity M3Si - M6Si but will be satisfied with the A3 until I can afford such...

Cheers!!

Hi Paul, I sold a pair of Dynaudio Audience 72s last week to a fellow member on here and he is using a Beringer A500 PA (£150) and Beresford Dac (£100) for the preamp and my God what a sound from those speakers in his system, absolutely amazing.

I'm guessing you might have to pay £400 for a decent pre-owned A3 integrated. The MF sound is very smooth and I can understand why it appeals. Just saying that I would be looking for something a bit more detailed and dynamic now. I have not heard this, but I have the bigger brother, the STA-9.

If this is anything like its bigger brother you will not be disappointed. Paired with a decent dac/preamp it might be what you are looking for: the smoothness of an MF but with more detail and dynamics. Later on, you might look to get a second and run them as monoblocks.

I will look into all those, thanks!

I don’t have the 72se’s yet (on my radar) I have the Audience 50’s... I love the 50’s but it seems the 72se’s are special - can I ask how much you sold them for?

I’m looking to spend between £300 and £350 on an A3 they go on eBay around £340 on average...

Would love to hear from someone wanting to sell!

Hi Paul, mine were just the plain old 72s not SEs and I sold them for £320 including £20 for fuel to deliver them. They were in good condition not perfect but okay.

I thought they sounded great in my house and in my system but in the new owner's system they were in a different league from what I'd heard previously.

The SE's will probably be even better but I do think that they need power and lots of it, I only have a cheap Chinese SS amp and about 50 w/pc.

Not a bad price.... I’m hoping to spend between £350 and £400 on the se’s....

My 50’s sounded fantastic with my X-A1 before I sold it...

Cheers!

You'll be lucky to get them for that, I thought they went for nearer contour prices having much in common with that range.

Saw a pair go for £399.... so I’m hopeful! I’m in no rush for the 72’s tho....

I have a MF ams35i in my main system and swear by it, so much so that I bought an MF A5 and was very happy with it. Then a friend brought an Amp Tastic mini 1 over to try out. Cut a long story short........I sold the A5 and bought the amptastic for £130 delivered and got £800 for the MF. This little amp is astounding, obviously the MF had more power but the Amptastic had more than enough for normal listening levels......and then some. I must admit that I sold the amptastic because I got hold of a CA 840A mk2 and it just bettered the amptastic, at 25 times the weight. If you can get a chance to listen to an Amptastic, go for it, it really will shock you. It did me!

Thanks all... But I have my heart set on an A3... the only other amp I'd consider at the moment is the A3.2 unless someone want's to sell a M3Si or M6Si for a ridiculously cheap price!

Thanks

Stick to your guns it's a great amp. But I'd add the A308 to your list, that's the only one I'd go for these days now I've moved up the food chain. Never liked the look and build of the A5 in comparison.

My brother has an A3.2 with matching CD player. Solid build and loads of grunt, will drive his B&W DM603's to window rattling levels, but nice at lower volumes too

Thanks Lawrence! List is now....

A3
A3.2
A308 (at a push!)
A5 (at a very big push!)

I love the sound and look of Musical Fidelity Amps and I can't wait to be an owner again!

If anyone out there has one of the above for sale or knows of anyone wishing to sell please drop me a line!

I'd want it boxed from a dealer with a 12m warranty at that price.

I've no idea of the prices of those amps just passing the details on, the sale is nothing to do with me.

End of the day the amp is only worth what someone will pay for it but the OP has made a rod for his now back as he has at least two wanted adverts running on two different forums for the amp he wants so naturally people are going to try to cash in.

Don't think people realise the attention the forums receive on the internet.

As an aside what is the 'going rate' for one of those amps? Just curious.

No offence intended but I’m well aware of the attention every time something gets posted on here... I cringe twice! Once because it’s not a reply offering me an amp to buy  twice because of what you’ve mentioned and the conversive track reveals prices etc - not that I am complaining as my idea is you’ll probably get a more reasonable encounter on a dedicated forum and are more likely to get a well looked after item...

I have a ceiling but for obvious reasons I’m not going to divulge

Going prices

A3 £330
A3.2 £450
A5 £550-£600

No idea on the A308

Cheers

A308 tends to go for a bit more than the A5 as it's generally better regarded. I believed it was one of the last UK made components, and the A5 was one of the first Taiwan/Asia made products. The case in particular is very nice.

This is the sort of deal you want

Thanks.... I am going to start a new wanted post as this one has gotten too long and nobody is going to read it now. Keep chatting about the amps on this thread if you like, but can you keep the one I repost clear for those who might want to offer me an amp?

Kind regards

Paul

Fair enough I would have thought a bit of chat and bumpage would help. Good luck with your search.

Kinda, but when it gets 3 pages long I think the initial messages gets lost or confused....

I do appreciate it though.
