Temp duncan dac swap

for various reasons me and steve have done a temporary dac swap so i currently have this on my rack

its quite different to the copper one, less bass girth (for want of a better word) but still a very nice listen indeed ... in some ways it could even be said it works better in my system than the copper one. bass is something im not shy of so if anthing skimming a bit off gives a fractionaly more balanced sound.
unfortunatly for steve i do prefer the overall presentation of the copper one its more rich sounding...

hdcd rip experience

thanks to Chris (stratmangler) giving me some useful digital information it can also be seen in the photo that i have been listening to some hdcd rip at 24/44.1.
the particular cd in question is boz scaggs 'dig'. i have tonight been able to do a direct comparison with the cd version and hdcd version. i wasnt that sure i would be able to tell a great deal between the two. i was also expecting to hear more of the difference in things like cymbals and fine detail.
it was ver interesting to hear that most of the extra benefit of the slightly higher rez was in the texure of the vocal.. particularly evident in track 2 'desire'.

i have listened to quite a bit of higher rez stuff recently, including some 24/192 eagles tracks ... quite astonishing the level of detail at that sorta rez!!

I've found that getting that last bit of data off HDCD discs to be worthwhile, and whilst the results aren't staggeringly better than just the normal 16 bit information they are better nonetheless.

its been very helpfull chris, i have a much clearer idea of the advantages of of higher rez music now, even when it is only a touch higher... did you notice the same thing on the vocal of the track in mention?

I did notice the vocal texture on that track - it is definitely better and more natural sounding from the 24 bit file.
It's a pity HDCD didn't catch on properly.
And now the rights to HDCD encoding belong to Microsoft, so who knows what's in store for it.
Actually, a bit of side information for you - all of the recent Windows Media Players can properly decode HDCD. WMP 9 used to give you an indication that it was taking place too. They dropped that bit of info with WMP 10.

Not that I use WMP any more.

not a great deal would be my guess...

me and my partner just bought 2 new pcs out of bit's it was only after we had got 50% of the way through buildeing them we realised we hadnt bought cd/dvd drives... we only actually need them for installing windows (and ripping and burning the odd cd hear and there) the rest of our software (90% adobe) has been bought direct and dowloaded from thier web site (genuinly too .. )
that forgetfullness about cd says something for the format i think!

Hamish... How does the Linn DS sound through a Dunc Dac compared to it's built on one ?

Basically - In my system the copper one adds a balance and richness over the majik alone. The majik alone lacks middle and sounds almost edgy - fatiguing for sure! Steves dac lacks some of the richness and bass depth and richness but excels in higher mid detail.
