Can anyone help with the following questions?

1. What is the best ripping software to use on a Microsoft PC

2. What size HDD would I need to store 500 CD ripped lossless.

3. Which is the best audio output from an android tablet (huawei mediapad) to go into a DAC.

if you get jriver and its remote app(not used the android version but the ios one is great) you could play from pc direct to dac via a cable or you could bluetooth it(the latest versions are very good), or use dlna . . could also use foobar(free) and its dlna server.. forgot the name. it works well.

ripping wise jriver's ape rip is best Ive tried. HDD a 500gb will probably be fine and leave plenty space for future.. get 2 and copy the hdd to a spare in case of cockups.

digi out of tablets is iffy imo and not for me

DbPoweramp. It has technology to check rips against a database.

You will get 2 to 3 albums into 1 gb in flac format. Whilst 500gb is adequate, the marginal cost of larger disks is small, and you will outgrow the smaller drives particularly if you start storing movies etc. I would not buy a drive smaller than 1tb and can recommend the WD 4tb Passport Drives. Definitely buy 2 drives and have them as mirrors of each other. Every drive will fail sooner or later, often catastrophically.

I presume you are looking at a wireless connection. If so you will need some device to plug into your DAC with your tablet control the playlists.

If you mean which app is best, then if your tablet has USB OTG then I recommend USB Audio Player PRO.

I have a 2TB hard drive, good for around 5000 CDs in flac apparently

I have been looking into this also.

I've settled on Media Monkey (Thanks Mr Beresford) for managing the library and playback

EAC for ripping CDs

My laptop only has USB out so that'll be my output.

I am getting the impression there are numerous amounts of software out there for sorting digital libraries and ripping CD's never mind playback. Good to have so much choice but making a decision what to use is tricky. I suppose it's a question of tried and tested or suck it and see.:)

Some of the information I am obtaining is for a mate with Windows operating system but some maybe for me using a Mac!

Dbpoweramp is free in its basic version though I have paid for a lifetime license. It has very good add in for getting the best album art and even for automated batch ripping using automated devices. Only cost for using is your time.

I also have a paid license for MediaMonkey which is also pretty good, but always end up going back to DbPoweramp. For playback that's another matter: the wonderful VLC media player every time, except of course when streaming.
