For me, Mark, it became that as soon as it was launched. Let's see:
1) Close to home, without a bollocks of a drive down south.

2) Free entry and easy parking right outside the hotel, with no need for fannying about with a 'park & ride'.
<Tick>
3) Lovely location and venue, rooms easily negotiated (unlike, for example, the 'rabbit warren' of Scalford).

4) Like you say, an interesting collection of equipment, a bit different from the norm/deviation from the mainstream.

Hopefully I'll spot Alan Firebottle though, seems I may hear his trousers before I see 'em. I want to corner him and bend his ear about phono amps and valve amp servicing. When I'm finished he'll wish he'd chosen something less conspicuous :)

Yes Ben, me and the missus will be there. My name is Steve and my face looks like someone set fire to it then beat out the flames with a cricket bat. Also I'm probably the only 60 year old sad enough to still have an eyebrow piercing :rolleyes:
And don't get me started on the Hendrix tattoo that looks like Trevor McDonald - that will be covered up.

Busy all day Saturday and supposedly Sunday the weather is going to be nicer so I can kill to birds with one stone and ride the motorbike to the show :D

I was due to go tomorrow - and probably will - but stopped by this afternoon on my way back home from doing some other things. I spent a few minutes in several of the rooms. Two that stood out for me in terms of the quality of the sound were the Brigadiers 'One Audio Mu.2' speakers in the Leema Acoustics room, and the Dutch & Dutch 8C speakers (on my 'possible' list). There seemed to be a nice & friendly atmosphere. Any particular recommendations for other rooms worth checking out?
Dammit I missed the Dutch & Dutch and I really wanted a listen to them. Oh well, I can't afford them anyway.
Best room I went in was the Lampizator. Big, clean open sound with proper bass, just how I like it. The only room using cable lifters and other nonsense that actually had a good sound.
Kralk Audio - fantastic speakers for £1300 quid, really impressive. As was the room with Luxman and PMC speakers - the proper professional three-way PMC with the mid range dome.
Nick (Longdog Audio) had a good sound going on with his amps and a Technics SL1210 into some sort of BBC LS3 variant. A couple of other rooms were also using Longdog amps and were getting a decent sound too. I think he is slowly taking over. ;)

Quintet 10 Best speaker in show for money IMO
I was going around whit my copy of La Folia Gregorio Paniagua which had a few mixed reviews
Paul Thomas Nice bloke to speak to after all ("cut my wrist listening to that") but it was the best TT and carthridge in show IMO in the Markaudio/Sota room well worth stopping there

Got an Ultrasonic Record cleaning machine and a Mofi Salty Dog (£40 for a MOFI …)
There was load to listen 2 or to look at ( I did not stop in many of the room whit Stcreamers and digicrap stuff) I am not going to mention the record stands Valves and cables there is plenty there

Well worth taking your time at the SoundKaos room and listen to the Liberation or at the opposite extreme (how do they do that ???) Kralk Audio whit the TDB-12 for £1200
Rothwell Audio In the Dough Brady room and the Luxman Phono stage as well

They had several smaller models there, not sure if they intended to demo them. The room was not large and the TDB12 didn't have any issues with bass boom.

Yes they are; someone asked that question whilst I was in there. Amazing speakers - one of the highlights of the day for me.

I asked that question. They said that it's because there's just him building the speakers in his garage. No one else to pay and no other overheads as such. If I was in the market for some new speakers, I'd be taking a very serious look at some of his smaller models.

An excellent show, undoubtedly for me the best in the UK, both from an exhibitors and venue POV. Plus it was great meeting some familiar faces (and new ones, hi Lee and Dave:wave:). Took loads of pics, so will download them later and add a few comments!:cool:

Just as a small taster, without question, this was one of the best sounds of the show, found in Mike Valentine's music lecture room (with Chasing the Dragon audiophile recordings), which sadly I didn't have time to attend. However, that gorgeous reel-to-reel machine and big ATCs were making some lovely music:

Yeah, they were 150s, Dave. I'm not always a fan, but fronted with the excellent Studer reel-to-reel, playing some stunning recordings, and how he'd set up the whole room, it was as close to 'being there' a live performance that I've heard from a hi-fi system!

That is home for me I seen the Live show a few times the last one about 6 7 years ago IMO san Vidal is far to big a venue and at that time the cembalo is very much lost (consider that it is a 500 year old instrument) and would have liked to ask how they recorded it

Well worth checking out if you get another chance. I meant to buy the latest Chasing the Dragon CD but I forgot to go back to the room. Agree with Marco about the system too, absolutely wonderful.
I was also impressed by the Danish Buchardt speakers in room 3.

As ever, Tony was a friendly and amenable host, playing a variety great music, some of which was even through Spotify that sounded more than acceptable. Through the streamer, the sound was excellent, and about the first time I've heard sound produced by TAD speakers that I could've lived with.
It was open, dymamic, engaging and effortlessly musical, and the standmounts on demo produced surprisingly well-controlled and extended bass, with a clean and crisp top-end that was never fatiguing. I can imagine these speakers sounding quite stunning (and rather intimate) in their intended environment, which would be a much smaller room than they were used in here.
£13k, though...:hmm:

Had a wander round for an hour or 2 earlier and thought the whole thing was really good, lovely enthusiastic atmosphere, lots of great sounding rooms. Marco.Agree they sound brilliant and they are good value at less than two grand. The bloke in that room told me their sensitivity is 94db which would be ideal for my amp.
Only thing is I'm not keen on the gimmicky appearance. I can imagine it becoming very dated.

Macca's favourite sound of the show, and I was also impressed (even if I sniggered a little at the 'cable lifters'), but my award for such goes somewhere else, which will be revealed later!

I was at Cranage again this morning, and enjoyed revisiting some of the rooms I had been to yesterday, and visiting some new ones.
The audiocounsel room, with Audio Note (TT2 turntable, OTO Phone SE and AN-J loudspeakers in a lovely olive veneer) was very good - there seemed to be a lot of coherence to the sound and I could easily imagine living with this kind of system.
The Kralk Audio room was also good and well attended - the £1300 TDB-12 speakers were playing and I was impressed - those speakers look to be very good value for money! Equally impressive were the Longdog Audio P6 monoblocks, and the Music First Audio Senlac SJE 100W monoblocks - I’d definitely want to hear both of these on home audition if I was in the market for this kind of amplifier.
I revisited the Leema Acoustics room (with the Brigadiers speakers), and the Dutch & Dutch room, and was just as impressed as yesterday. Perhaps even more so today by the Dutch & Dutch 8Cs - again, I could imagine these kind of speakers working very well in many different rooms and spaces.
I spent a bit of time in the Puresound room listening to Julius Katchen play Beethoven’s third piano concerto, on a reel tape through Heco’s 2-way Direkt speakers;

I’d like to listen to this set-up again, with some other recordings - I think it has a lot of potential in the right room.
The Lampizator room was excellent - they kindly played some of Coltrane’s Village Vanguard recordings at my request, and there was a genuine sense of scale and presence which was astonishing at times, with the Diapaison speakers really impressing. I’m not sure if I could live with something as full-on as this, but it is good to know it exists;

I listened with interest to a room with the Universum horns, and felt this was balanced more towards hifi than music - but I’d certainly listen again. Who has the room and space for a system like this though?

The best room, by some distance, in my view, partly because the volume was sensible and not straining against the constraints of the room, was with the soundkaos speakers. I only heard the smaller VOX3 prototypes, and not the larger Wave and Libération speakers (I had a football match to watch!), which is probably a good thing as the VOX3’s gave one of the most convincing musical representations I heard on either day, and are almost affordable at £4500. They would (will?) be first on my list for a home audition, particularly if an active version is developed;

I have a slight difference of opinion on the room with the active ATC 150s. The treble and midrange were excellent, but I thought that bass had a pronounced boom - my impression was that smaller speakers would have worked better. However, there were only a few other people in the room at the time, and it could be that the sound would be different if the room had been full.

The design is great, because not only can you chop and change the drive unit boxes (aside from the tweeter and mid section), you can clip the crossover components in and out, and substitute them with something else suitable, to alter the sound and 'tune' it to your requirements accordingly!
For me, that's really useful and quite clever. Plus, the sound 'as is' was very good. Rarely have I heard open-baffle speakers, despite their undoubted talents elsewhere, produce realistic and believable bass, rather than simply a tuneless 'thud' - well these did! And they sounded excellent in the mid too, in true OB fashion.
If I were to criticise them, it would be to say that they were a little muted at the top end, lacking the extension and 'sparkle' to make their overall presentation more musically convincing, but of course that could well be easily sorted with a crossover component change!
Anyway, defo recommended for anyone considering a pair of high-end OBs, and who'd like the ability to tweak the sound without needing to use a soldering iron:cool:

Unfortunately, I didn't get to hear the larger of the two speaker models, but the tiny little ones were amazing for their size, oh so musical, sweet sounding, but natural, not lacking in bass weight for their size, and were very well-made. The whole system produced a most captivating sound, which I enjoyed listening to very much. Definitely a brand to look out for!:)

For me the Pure audio project would be my top of the list they do all I get from the Maggies + the bits that the Maggies do not do ,shift air and hit you in the tummy.
One can start whit the basic set up and add bit and pieces and upgrade when possible.
No chance to ear those at home as again to keep prices down there are no distributors involved but from what I was told they are very accommodating.

Had a nice day out today at the show... I was a bit saddened that few rooms actually put up on display what they were playing.
At previous shows I've discovered some really nice music by being able to take notes. I did see a chap using an app on his mobile to try and find out what was playing (it was some nice jazz) and his phone kept telling him it was Nicki Minaj --- I found that particularly amusing.

For me, probably the best sound of the show (depending on the music being played), based on delivering the highest SPPV. The speakers on demo simply had no right to sound that good, considering their modest cost! :eek:
I spoke to the chap who made them (built them in his garage) and told him that they were too cheap! He could easily add a grand onto the price, and they'd still be competitive.
Don't get me wrong though, whilst excellent, they don't set any new standards for sound reproduction. Aspects of their presentation did lack a little subtlety, namely at the top-end, where with some material the tweeters used could be a little insistent' and slightly nasal sounding, but then when the retail price is £1300, not £13,000, you can't afford to buy the absolute best quality drive units. What's there though, does the job nicely.
These speakers are clearly about the SUM of the parts, not about the 'greatness', or otherwise, of any boutique components, and have been voiced, first and foremost (I suspect mostly by ear), by someone who loves music. At the end of the day, it's a music lover's speaker, not a tool for analysing test tones or wallowing in superficial 'hi-fi effects'.
In that respect, the Kralks never failed to sound nicely open and communicative, especially when reproducing acoustic instruments, such as sax and piano. Vocals were also rendered convincingly and with natural clarity, although perhaps the midrange lacked the beguiling 'hear-through' quality and forensic levels of insight one gets with the very best loudspeakers, equipped of course with eye-watering expensive drive units!
Low-frequencies were tight, tuneful and nicely extended, and as such, bass-driven/rhythmic music bopped along with an infectious elan, producing that all-important 'fun factor', which promotes extended listening sessions, and if one is so inclined, boogying around the room!:D
The Kralks may not be your first choice as a truly neutral monitor, or for in-depth analysis into the minutiae of musical mixes, but for anyone with a budget of around £1500, who wants a decent sized stand-mounted speaker, beautifully built and finished too I may add, and likes their favourite tunes to put a smile on their face, with a design that possess no small measure of musical ability, then the Kralks are the 'fun listen' you've been looking for!
For the money, I really can't recommend them highly enough. My advice? If you're in the market for speakers like this, then grab them NOW before the manufacturer realises he's giving them away, and the price goes up accordingly!! :cool:

Walking down one of the corridors, I became aware some very loud, beat-laden music. Then I got to the door, which should have had a sign saying "Bangin' Choons" printed on it. So I had to have a look...
The music was so ravey I half expected to see a bouncer at the door, searching everyone before allowing them in. The loudspeakers were called Dutch+Dutch 8c and very impressive they were too. Much of the slam I've heard at clubs and gigs seemed to be there, with a powerful and tuneful bass which my feet were itching to follow. I never got to hear how they would behave with something a bit more subtle though.
If they're going to be there again next year, I'll bring some glow sticks and really 'ave it large.
My vote for my favourite sound (fwiw) had to be that room with the big ATC's though. I think I could live with that. Mrs. P wasn't too keen on those speakers though. "They used to have ones like that at my mum's Labour Club" was her opinion. Although she did prefer them to the Audio Note ones we saw in another room - she thought they looked like SpongeBob SquarePants.
One more thing I'd like to mention was meeting Alan (Firebottle) in the bar. His pants were exactly as advertised. I can't think of anything in the natural world, or man-made, where those keks would blend in. Alan, I applaud you for having the bottle (forgive the pun). And what a pleasant and personable man he is! (And he looks younger than me, bastard!) Anyway, he accepted my mindless drivel with good grace, and never once tried to escape. I admit I was a little star-struck, and in my excitement forgot to request a selfie with him.
I'll stop writing now to make way for people who know about hifi, as I know these posts are a bit shit without pictures.
I believe the price of the Kralk includes the stands and shipping. There's a discount if you go and collect them. A crazy bargain, if they are the sort of thing your looking for.

The big Kralks strike me as a sort of modern equivalent to the old Wharfedale Dovedale III. Simliar driver configuration and they always delivered a lot for the money. Taking inflation into account, probably comparable price wise too.

Spent about half-an-hour in that room.. Good sound for £600 kits it has to be said. Although when it went to more "rockier" tracks you started to hit the limitations of even the clever transmission line designs of the boxes. If you like lots of vocal and acoustic music they were bargains in my opinion.

Nae worries, someone had to take the mantle from you of chief pictchoorizer, up in this neck of the woods. Can't match the quality of yours, though.
I think some of the pics have come out ok, considering that I was only using a cheap digital camera, and mostly didn't have much time to take them (just quickly pointing and shooting, as it were), especially when rooms were full of folk (yes:eyebrows:) and I was standing up in front of them all to get a clear shot of what I was photographing - hence why there are none of baldy, pee-stained pensioners, sat with their carrier bags and pained expressions!:D

I take your point about the missus, but she is the only person I know that would accompany me to this. And I can't be trusted to find the place on my own. I'm worse than useless with satnav, and if I relied on directions from strangers I would probably end up at Munich or Chicago. :(
I didn't feel comfortable asking Alan about the contents of his trousers, after all it was only our first date. And the cuffs of his pant legs were too tight to enable any chance of "upskirting".

Lol..... I've already reduced my attendance at shows to once, annually, at Cranage, which is simply because it's convenient, as it's less than 50 minutes drive from home. It's also a good show.
My reduction in going to shows is simply because I'm not as into hi-fi as I once was (hence why I don't talk about it as much now), so often find these events somewhat sad and depressing [this one wasn't, though], and because I have plenty of other things to occupy my time.
And given the maintenance of good health, that's only liable to increase, especially once Del has retired and we start travelling the world! Hi-fi shows will be the last thing on my/our minds. Music, however, will always remain a passion of mine (and Del's), so more gigs/concerts, less hi-fi shows (but plenty of La Dolce Vita), until we're in our zimmers:D

Pretty much agree with this post,I spent to much of my early life focusing on career and chasing materialistic stuff be it cars bikes Hifi houses etc.Finding out a young child has Cancer certainly focuses one on what really matters these days.

Apart from the carrier bag. Mrs P confiscated it after I left it (with Leonard Cohen album inside) leaning on a bench outside. Luckily some honest soul found it and left it in reception (thankyou stranger).
As for the pee-stained pants, I couldn't help it. i always get over-excited when I meet a celebrity (same thing happened when I saw the woman who played Mavis Riley in Coronation Street at Glasgow Central station). Alan was very cool about it, and offered to lend me some pants (he had a spare pair in his car). I declined though, I do have standards you know.
Although if I ever find myself in a paramotor and want to be as visible as possible to passing fighter planes, I suppose they would work better than a 20 foot bright orange wing.

lovely to see the pics , i was extremely sad to have to let my frugalhorns go as owner wanted them back !!!!
I had a listen to the ones with the rinky-dink little drivers. Speakers like this are not even on my radar but if you wanted a little speaker that will work best tucked away in the corners and will give at least a taste of 'scale', especially if you are into Classical, they are worth a listen.
Love that digital Nagra tape machine - one of the last they designed for the professional market.

Low-frequencies were tight, tuneful and nicely extended, and as such, bass-driven/rhythmic music bopped along with an infectious elan, producing that all-important 'fun factor', which promotes extended listening sessions, and if one is so inclined, boogying around the room!:D
The Kralks may not be your first choice as a truly neutral monitor, or for in-depth analysis into the minutiae of musical mixes, but for anyone with a budget of around £1500, who wants a decent sized stand-mounted speaker, beautifully built and finished too I may add, and likes their favourite tunes to put a smile on their face, with a design that possess no small measure of musical ability, then the Kralks are the 'fun listen' you've been looking for!
For the money, I really can't recommend them highly enough. My advice? If you're in the market for speakers like this, then grab them NOW before the manufacturer realises he's giving them away, and the price goes up accordingly!! :cool:

I particularly liked the Dutch & Dutch active speakers with room correction, fantastic dispersion and beautiful non sibilant vocals.
The Aeron gear blew me away, the C-101 tube Pre/headphone amp with built in DSD USB DAC was the size of a CD case and about 40mm tall. Its matching 50w(4ohm) 30w(8ohm) class D power amp was a similar size. I had been impressed with RichB's Mini-T amp at the NEBO meets, these things took it to another level. For all there diminutive size, coupled to some Arcaydis EB2S speakers they produced a terific midrange, gob smackingly good for the very reasonable price of, £295 for the Power amp and £325 for the Pre/DAC.

It's an enjoyable show to participate in. Easy to get to and to get equipment in & out. Wide, light airy corridors. Plenty of different sized rooms. Free admission, welcoming hosts & a glass of fizz on entry. There isn't a pushy selling vibe there either. The show & the attendance both seem to have grown this year. It's the only UK show I feel like being involved with at the moment.
Also quite fun to have nothing digital in the room this year! :D

Hey Marco, I am here :). I did go on Sunday (all day) and listened in every room, including the in-car audio. I also took loads of pictures. The only reason I haven’t posted anything is pressure of work. However, I think it’s pretty clear that this is now the premiere show in the UK. It was a shame that BD Audio didn’t have a system there (but understandable as they have now, as of today, ceased trading), MAX weren’t exhibiting either, though I think they only did the first show. Other than that there was a very broad range of gear on show. I’ll see if I can pull a report together :).
First show I've been to for over 10 years. My daughter drove as I no longer drive. I enjoyed it as expected, my daughter thought it was very good which i was not expecting. The show certainly was not as I remember hifi shows which was like cattle being taken to market.
The show works for the hifi industry because my daughter now wants a hifi! The problem the hifi industry has, is most under 40s do not own there own homes and the ones who do have very little money left over after paying the mortgage and for a car, anyway my daughter is adamant she wants a 'hifi' her words. She has decided to buy an amp and some good head phones.
So a big thumbs up from me for the show:)

Agree it is a fantastic day. Third year on the trot for me and I have a great time every year.
Only problem for me as with all shows is that I get wow factor fatigue after a while which means I don't end up visting all the rooms.
Looking at the highlughts Marco and others have posted it looks like I missed a few good ones as well.
Still spent six hours there on Saturday though. And this time I only spent 20 quid!

I thought that Aeron stuff was incredible, given the tiny size and really tidy price tag. I shot myself in the foot by sitting down in there, giving Mrs. P time to see the price tag. "£600 quid for the two? So why did yours cost so much?"

Yeah it was a really good show. we went to the bar at first for a cup of tea, mapped out where to go and had a lot of rests as not to get listing fatigue. I think this was good tactic though others may have different thoughts.

I liked the guy doing the demo too, as he was up for playing all sorts of good music, Zappa, Free, all sorts, including a superb jazz album from Donald Byrd, featuring a great drum solo track at the end of one of the sides. I took a picture of the cover. The picture of the T/T I took, posted previously, also shows that record being played.
It sounded stunning, through the system being demonstrated, and I'm definitely going to get that album! For me, one of the best systems of the show, crucially made that way by a friendly and amenable Welsh host, not to mention a comfy big sofa to sit on!! :cool:

Demonstrators should always be prepared to play a wide variety of music at shows. Also, IMO, the highest compliment one can pay about a demonstration is to enquire about/discuss the music played, as that is a sign the system is neutral and 'disappears'.

I completely agree, Barry! The chap told me what it was, obviously some kind of Japanese exotica, but I forget the name. Perhaps someone here could identify it? Btw, no need for the inverted commas, as it was defo £8k. The dealer told me.
Trust me though, it was absolutely superb - wide open, supremely detailed, without being soullessly analytical, majoring in musical analysis, and with near-Decca levels of attack and dynamic alacrity, rich, lush midrange, without sounding in any way warm or syrupy, and where the programme material warranted, sledgehammer bass, brim-full of texture and rhythm.
A sheer delight to listen to, with all sorts of music, and about the only ultra-high end MC cartridge I've heard that I would consider buying - a veritable game changer!

I know they have to use the best source possible, but it's an extreme example of what an analogue system can do SQ wise.
Those sort of records make up less than 1% of collections. The Sheffield lab Jazz Lps are really funny (generally pretty poor music but cut well!)

I'm not sure if it even comes with a stylus guard or matching fixings for the tapped holes. The reviewer makes a lot of fuss about the packaging, but ignores more important matters.
The spec is incomplete: no mention of the velocity at which the output is quoted; no mention of the frequency at which the compliance is quoted, and no mention of the effective tip mass of the stylus.
Maybe the designer tried a variety of colour finishes and found 'cerise' sounded the best? :D

All look like good ideas. Although, inspired by Alan Firebottle's pants, I'm on the lookout for the loudest, brightest Hawaiian shirt possible (must have parrots on it).
Marco is the man to see about stained glass. And also stained bedsheets. And he'll have plenty of red (sorry cerise) underpants to dish out, all with stains on them too.
Stains are extra, and priced accordingly, depending on scent and texture. Some of the more exotic pongs can be pricey.

I had to travel all the way to Hamburg, and spent a week with my head in wheely bins in the Reeperbahn, to get anywhere near the same aroma.

I'm not sure if it even comes with a stylus guard or matching fixings for the tapped holes. The reviewer makes a lot of fuss about the packaging, but ignores more important matters.
The spec is incomplete: no mention of the velocity at which the output is quoted; no mention of the frequency at which the compliance is quoted, and no mention of the effective tip mass of the stylus.
Maybe the designer tried a variety of colour finishes and found 'cerise' sounded the best? :D
Lol - it's a crazy/mad price for a cartridge, no doubt, but trust me, it definitely delivered the musical goods, unlike the 'all hi-fi and no music' forensic-meisters one normally finds today, with super high-end MC cartridges!
I don't think I've ever heard anything better. Bloody fugly looking thing though, although obviously very well 'screwed together'.

The Daleks weren't shown going up and down stairs, but even back in the mid 60's (The Chase) they were shown at different levels in the sets (haunted house exhibition and the Marie Celeste) but the BBC couldn't show them getting there.

The Daleks had to evolve, they were truly the worst equipped plumbers in town. Just a plunger to unblock sinks and baths, and with no means to get upstairs to the bathroom (we don't all live in a bungalow).
It was a case of adapt or go out of business. No wonder they're such bad tempered buggers.
They could use their built-in egg whisks to get jobs as omelette chefs in posh hotels.

The Japs (and Chinese), when it comes to styling their equipment, often seem to enjoy a bit of bling. Rather like that shiny 'faux rosewood' wood veneer, one sees on some high-end vintage Pioneer turntables, coupled with gold bits plastered around them. It's just not my thing at all - and couldn't live with it no matter how good it sounded :spew:

Great sound in the Long Dog Audio room with Graham speakers.
A really interesting Danish bookshelf with a rear passive bass radiator too.

I enjoyed some Nils Frahm, cinematic orchestra and Keith Jarrett in the first room. Ok, kj is standard fair but the other two were show firsts for me.
