View Full Version : What is the Most Cringingly Awful Thing in Music?

I'd like to propose a motion that will save the world's citizens from much heartache, ear-ache and grief. It will be the first important step in the move away from criminal cheesiness in music.

The motion:
All songs with the words 'Rock & Roll' in the title should be banned. They should rounded up, put in a lead-lined box & fired into deepest outer space, never to be seen or heard again.

There should be two exceptions to the rule. Only two songs can remain on earth. The first is:
'Rock 'n' Roll Suicide' by David Bowie

...............because I'm making the rules and I like it.

The second should be the nastiest, most foul example of the breed that we can think of & it should remain with us forever as a reminder of just how bad things can get if we ever allow this horrendous situation to proliferate again.

So, what do you think should be the other song that is allowed to remain?

Maybe, but if it stays, I vote we put him in the lead-lined box with all the other records.

Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin

Oh, shit, I forgot that one! That needs to stay too. We'll listen to Bowie from Saturdays - Tuesday lunchtimes & Led Zep till Friday nights. OK?

Anyone with these records in their collection needs the lethal injection

Black Sabbath ''Rock 'n' Roll Doctor''
Rainbow "Long Live Rock & Roll"
Motorhead ''Rock & Roll"
AC/DC ''Rock 'n' Roll Singer''

I can begin to see how I haven't thought this through properly.
I'll have to have a chat with Patti Smith to see if she can change the lyrics a little, that way it can stay.

The AC/DC ones though? They go straight in the box with 10CC and Andre's list.

Joe,
That's the kind of thing I was thinking of as an outstanding exemplar of just how bad things can get. That one is for sure on the short list for reminding the music industry of its past crimes!

I still stand by the general priciple, though.
There's a lot of shite that proclaims the wonder of rock & roll - some of it might put the newcomer to music off completely!

Beechwoods

Rock and roll is something a ship does, or a bed in a camper van. It's definitely not a fit description for young people's music, not in my book anyway!

Given the thread title I would like to move away from the use of that awful term "rock'n'roll" to another cringe area - that of certain gratuitously crap sound effects. I propose, as the most cringeworthy that of the electronic "hand-clap". It's ruined many a good (yes there some) dance and house songs esp. from the early 90s but it also made a large number of funk and disco tracks unlistenable. I mean, what's so hard about recording a real person slapping two chunks of their flesh together in some semblance of rhythm? Ergh.

Well no,
But if someone answered the question "What is the Most Cringingly Awful Thing in Music?" by saying "Prog", then I reckon that would make this a disasterous thread for Andre.

The truth of the matter is that there would be a whole list of contenders had the question been: "What is the Most Cringingly Awful Thing in Prog?"

Moody Blues - I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band)

It not only has the offending phrase, it is written and performed by my nomination for the Worst Band in Living History. A band with nary a whiff of Rock n Roll about them.

Oh, the irony....

Agreed! Though I could nominate other, equally bad, groups.
