Which version of Moode are you using now, Dunc, or are you onto something else now? I suspect the version I've got, which you installed ages ago, needs updating :)

I've always kept up with the latest versions of moOde but prefer Osmc on my main system.
Osmc now supports most Pi dacs and digi hats with Kodi giving me passthrough modes for my 5.1 stuff.

I hate using a phone/tablet/computer to access and select music so now just use my tv remote.

Simply turn the tv on and select an album, doesn't get easier than that.
Also anyone else can access the music/films and any online content they require.

In the kitchen I still run MoOde v4.0 on a Pi3 wireless.

Interesting, Dunc! I totally see where you're coming from and can appreciate the potential benefits of what you've done :)

I guess it depends on your lifestyle and how you use your devices at home. I'm always on my laptop (posting here, etc), and so it feels more intuitive for me that way accessing my digital music library, via the RPi, than using a remote control.

When the new Pi3 b+ comes out and is ready to use, in terms of software, swing by on your bike and we'll do the whole shebang, along with installing the latest version of Moode:cool:

Interesting. It's a pity they didn't throw in a bit more RAM too.

btw. I setup both Moode and Volumio recently and can't decide which way I want to go. Currently running Volumio. I read a rumour that Moode hasn't had any updates for a while. Certainly Volumio just had an update, so it is still being worked on.

MoOde had an update to V4.0 last month and is due a bump to 4.1 soon.

Good to hear. Unfortunately, mine says it is up to date still. I guess that means it won't update from 4.0 beta12 to 4.0 release ? Pity if I have to go through the whole mess of generating a new image again.

Meanwhile an new Volumio update arrived today.

It's difficult to choose between moode and volumio, I have used both over the last couple of months, I am currently running moode 4.0. I love the main Ui and options available in moode but much prefer the library setup in volumio. I think a combination of the two would suit me. :)

Moode has been great for me, but I was upset to see that it had moved to some kind of complicated self-build update process that requires computing nous above my meagre abilities! Is this still the case?

Happy with the version I'm using, but it is tempting to give Volumio a try to satisfy the upgraditis :)

I believe the Moode install is complex due to some software it uses now and that the issue won't go away due to licencing reasons. I can't be bothered to invest the time so I'll stick with Volumio even though I have used previous versions of Moode.

I'm also put off now with Moode needing these extra steps to install. I'm on an older version at the moment and am thinking about an upgrade to newer software.

Haven't tried Volumio yet but am keen to know if it's the way to go or should I give runeaudio a try?

Also curious about Volumio since the changes to Moode delivery have made it harder to get.

I initially preferred Volumio but found it near impossible to install radio stations and NAS drives - has that improved with the most recent incarnation?

Picoreplayer has just be released with support for the Pi 3b+... here (https://sites.google.com/site/picoreplayer/home/news)

It's a very good player. I use the onboard LMS with a 512GB SSD attached to it so you don't need a separate NAS or laptop running.

Do you mean that you run both Picoreplayer and LMS on one RPi, with the SSD attached directly via USB? That's something I would like to try. I'm a regular Moode user and have no trouble installing that, but I do struggle to understand how Picoreplayer works. I haven't been able to find a shot of what the player UI looks like or even see how to access it.

If you use it with LMS and an attached display then the UI is exactly the same as the Squeezebox Touch. Alternatively you can use any of the phone/tablet apps that interface with LMS (Orange Squeeze, iPeng etc)

PiCorePlayer seems to be just a player - i.e. you need to run an LMS (server) somewhere. btw. You can use Volumio (and Moode) to do the same thing - it's just an add-on.

Not so!, LMS can be installed as previous post, on the SSD card. In fact it works better like that!

Well, that is somewhere isn't it. :) Forgive me, I didn't realise PiCorePlayer integrated the LMS install as well. I see on the web site that it is a "work in progress".

It's as much a work in progress as anything ever done with Squeezebox - that is work never stops because things are being refined, and on occasion completely rewritten because service providers change their delivery protocols.
It happens to be a very slick and stable bit of programming.

Yep. I just downloaded PiCorePlayer and set up LMS on it as well, on my test RPi rig. Great to have choices :)

Yes, exactly like that. You need to install "extra file systems" - there is a button on the LMS tab in PCP and it takes 30 secs or so. You can also install Samba (you need to enable beta version settings) so you can access the drive across your network. The SSD is silent, draws far less power than a hard drive and you are also not pulling music across a network from a NAS. I use the Squeeze Control app on Android to control the PCP.

Which SSD you are using?
How many albums will it hold?
File types - FLAC, WAV, IFF etc
Do you experience any drop outs on playback?
Also does the SSD need it’s own psu as I think the pi is unable to power it from its usb. I have a pi2B
What DAC are you using?
I have built a Vortexbox which uses LMS but I think the pi with SSD negates a lot of the issues with a network.

I use a small 1TB hard drive with my Pi2B. I find the cost of an SSD still hard to justify when the normal hard drive works well, holds heaps of music, is powered from the Pi and never causes dropouts - and is so cheap.

I use a 1TB drive and find powering it individually via a Y usb lead brings a big lift in resolution. Possibly the drive was pumping noise along the power lines or the puny power traces on the Pi pcb were an issue.

Interesting, Clive... Perhaps that's why I found powering my twin Seagate 3TB NAS drives with a dedicated linear PSU [built by Duncan] made a massive difference to the sound I get from my RPi, see here:

You should try it, if you think that what you did made a difference, as it essentially takes the concept a few stages further! :)

Hi Marco, some day I'll compare NAS to my self-powered USB approach. Ethernet connection may well be better though I suspect I've cured most of the USB ills with the self powered drive.

BTW I had to prevent the HDD from feeding power the Pi, I used a solid connector with the +5V contact removed. It may be though that I end up moving to the Allo Sparky from the Pi as these seem to give better results but are more hassle to setup.

I found that powering my USB hard drive from a USB hub, rather than the Pi, gave a significant improvement in SQ.

Powering your SSD/HD separately with a good PSU, or any other attached USB device for that matter and disconnecting the 5v at pin 1 on the USB data lead is a very good idea.

For those not good with DIY and soldering of such small items, SBOOSTER (makers of the PSU's) do a USB pass through adapter that has pin 1 disconnected. Their example use is with a DAC, but it will work the same. They charge 21.50 Euros for it though, which is a bit of a cheek. Here: https://www.sbooster.com/sbooster-tweaks/
I don't know if it has any other components inside, I suspect not.

Must get round to building a rpi, had one on the drg board for a while - Single box/RPi/Linear PSU/1TB SSD, just not had the time. :)

Hi Lee,

Its quite simple. I have a 500GB Samsung Evo 850 SSD. Its big enough to hold over 9000 tracks as WAV and roughly double that as FLAC. It is powered directly from the RPI3 which is battery powered. I tried powering the SSD from a separate battery but to my ears it sounded worse. There are no drop-outs on playback which I did have occasionally when streaming over the WiFi. I am using the Caiman SEG (12V battery powered). I hope that helps!
