View Full Version : JBL TL260 crossover repair
Hi, a friend of mine has burnes his JBL TL260 crossover and asked me if it is possible to repair the board.
Since I'm not an expert on the field i wonder where the best place to get parts from, parts that are suitable for hifi audio. I have not seen the board other than theese pictures but I'm pretty sure it's doable.
Also any hints on what components i should be checking first and the reason for this to happend is greatly appretiated.

Are both speakers still working? And do both crossovers have the same 'burn' areas?
It looks to me as though the resistors have been getting hot. They may be perfectly OK though. It would be worth testing them with a meter and also checking the capacitors. The inductors are probably fine.

Cant realy see much as the photos are very small
I see that the uploaded images was more or less useless. I believe the drivers still works but not as they should because of the crossovers

Pretty sure that would cost more just in norwegian taxes than buying new ones.

I'd just change the capacitors and see how things sound. The resistors are likely to be OK and the PCB tracks look undamaged and the discolouration means nothing really. I'm wondering if there's a defect at all. It seems odd that both speakers exhibit identical symptoms at the same time. That seems unlikely.
What is good place to find components that are suitable for audio equipment? I usually order from elfa.se but I don't know if there should be special caps designed for audio
I have now received the boards and i see that 4 of the 5 caps are bulging.
Got a clarification on the issue today as well, with both speakers are that the mids are silent.
Both actually looks like it has the identical bad caps and discoloration on the back.

Just make sure the voltage rating of the new caps Is at least as high as what's printed on the original ones.
Also, make sure you measure any component before fitting It. I've had parts with the wrong value printed on the side and faulty parts.
Found some replacement caps on elfa, all from Panasonic but the 14µf which is made by Rubycon.

Should i go with 56 µf or 47 µf as a replacement for the 50 µf and are these ok for this use?

Thank you for the heads up, I did not know bipolar ones existed. That explains the NP tag on theese caps, guess I need to do some more reading :)
But i can't seem to find caps on the pages you listed with at least 100v and about the same µf

I read somewhere that 40v is equivalent to 200w into 8ohm or 400w into 4ohm. So any of those caps I listed should be fine.

I know this is an old thread, but I have the exact same problem with my JBL TL20.
Midrange driver is practically non existent on Left speaker and slightly more than nothing on the right.
I still really like the TL260 and would love to get them fully operational again.
