Now after six years of using a Moth RCM, I am thinking about a new machine. The Moth, in conjunction with L'Art Du Son Record Cleaning Fluid, is very effective and probably is all that is needed for more than acceptable results for precious vinyl.

My problem is this: The Moth is VERY noisy and requires me using ear defenders to avoid ringing in the ears and it's uncomfortable.

What is out there as effective but much quieter?

Rather a lot, incl. Keith Monks, VPI, Clearaudio etc.), but quietness seems to be commensurate with cost. My VPI 16.5 isn't quiet, but I've never needed to wear anything over my ears. However, my age-related hearing probably doesn't hold a candle to yours.:)

i wear ear plugs when using my moth. its loud and even louder as its in a tight bit at back of kitchen.. does a great job tho and i dont use it all that much tbh so will stick with its noisy simplicity

Is the title supposed to say "MJoth"? Or did your big fingers get in the way typing? :)

I'll change it to 'Moth' if you like.

I have a Loricraft PRC 3 , its bliss compaired to the Okki Nokki and Moth I previously owned

Not cheap £1400,00 but what quality is ? UK made and comes as std with a 5 year Guarantee , I love my machine , I can clean LP's and listen to LP's at the same time , How good it that :)

Yes a slip of the finger there. Please change to Moth. Thanks. :)

Will take a look at them. The Moth is very good but is so noisy it really is a pain TBH. Thanks. :)

If you want a quiet RCM be prepared to pay out big money all the reasonably priced ones are noisy.

Budget not really an issue tbh. Reliability and value for money more important. And QUIETER than the (very good) Moth.

Another vote for Loricraft. I had a Nitty Gritty 1.5 Pro (?) for years but when it died and was beyond repair I had to look for a replacement. After reading everything I could I decided on Loricraft, a PRC-4, and am really pleased with it. It is much quieter than the Nitty Gritty but more importantly it cleans the record better - they are noticeably quieter - virtually no background noise with less pops and crackles than previously.

There was something like this at the Bristol show and it appeared to clean 3 lp's at ounce - wasn't working just on static display.

Be aware that ultrasonic machines are abrasive in action and so it would be wise to only buy a unit designed for gentle vinyl work !

I think you will find it makes a Loricraft look cheap

Is that the machine I got a price for in another RCM thread ? It is undergoing trials before going to market ?

If so, you could buy two Loricrafts for the price..

the way they talked it was supposed to be a lower priced model. dont see a good reason for a machine to be any more than a grand or so. moths are great value as they go for ever. i dont mind wearing ear plugs

The guy had an open budget so felt it fair to put up a reasonable priced machine that looks to fit the criteria in the orgininal request, according to the industry expert Michael Fremer that cavitation based machines are the best method for cleaning vinyl records and I don’t think IMO that these can be dismissed when considering a future RCM

A friend of mine who lives down south uses the Audiodesk ultrasonic machine for cleaning Records, also has the VPI machine, he’s had it since it came out 5 years ago and to date has reported no issues with any abrasive action damaging the records, he also claimed that the VPI now makes a nice dust collector in the corner of the room

Not quite sure how these work, but I think the record revolves in a tank of fluid, which, presumably, is ditched after a certain number. If so, that doesn't sound too good to me.

Do they vacuum dry (or even blow-dry) the record so that it's ready for the inner? Can't see how, with part of the record immersed. Whereas I'm sure the ultrasonic method is superlative, it seems pointless if you're going to lose the benefits of a common or garden RCM.

The DIY versions have a large tank where the record is immersed and revolves around a central axis via a motor drive, the record is the manually removed for drying either on a rack or some offer a drying tank which has an air dryer.

The commercial machines have a small tank which automatically fills as part of the cycle, after cleaning the tank automatically empties and a blow dryer is activated, I believe the commercial machines have a filter to clean the crap that has been removed

Do you find the need to use ear plugs or ear defenders whilst using the Project? As I've had the Moth for six years it is a nuisance, for me at least, having to block out the noise.

I can't quite believe that I have just spent five minutes watching a record rotate!

However, I am not sure about the machine blow drying the record post cleaning - seems more logical to me to dry by sucking the remaining water/crud? off the vinyl. I would worry that any remaining dust would be baked on as the suspension evaporated.

Hi Al

Ive been looking at the Loricraft machines the last couple of days and have seen the demo videos on Youtube. Would you say the records are better cleaned on the Loricraft compared to the Okki Nokki and Moth machines

I may purchase one of these machines myself in the near future

Clean is clean. I have owned KMAL, Loricraft, Nitty Gritty and Moth, all did the job equally well.

just my opinion :)

That's interesting as I do find the Moth intolerable without some form of ear protection. Thanks.

There was another thread about RCMs, where I had contacted them for a price and it isn't cheap. I believe it was more expensive than a Loricraft.

Never seen a proper rcm in action, is it insert vinyl, close lid and wait? I made my own using a turntable chassis with a 15rpm motor in place of the bearing, sub platter and reversing switch. Then a VPI 16.5 suction pipe connected to a flexible tube that I connect to a wet vac. I spray the cleaner on to the record and use a brush. Can't remember how to upload a photo, don't think I can from an iPad. Can't drag the photo to the attachment panel. ok dragged to panel, now what?
