View Full Version : Thinking about buying some Headphones

After a 2 year break I'll be going back on shifts as of Monday.
I'd like to buy a set of headphones for late night listening so would appreciate any recommendations. I'd like headband style no in ears.

My budget........ Well no more than £65 if at all possible.

Grado SR60e... Slightly more expensive (69 quid from Amazon) but well worth it.

Grado SR60e. Excellent sound, but can get uncomfortable if worn for extended periods of time.

I would change the earpads to the ring shaped ones. More comfortable and sound better that way to me.

I'm a Sennheiser guy myself, with a rather old pair at that. But a friend who does recording engineering for classical ensembles likes the Sony MDR-7506. These are apparently quite the thing in the pro recording community (Google it...). And a bargain to boot....about US$65 at Amazon.com. Hopefully similar over there.

I have AKG K550s, which I love to bits. Closed back, no shortage of bass. Mk 2 version being sold off at Richers for £99. Some 551s, virtually unused, on ebay at mo. for £69.

I'm a big fan of AKG budget offerings.

Recently bought a pair of K52 for the princely sum of £26 online. They're excellent.

Within your budget you could maybe get them and perhaps some Koss or Superlux too for a bit of variety.

Yes the foam ones are like wearing a hair shirt. I changed mine to soft over ear type but the bass is over powering with them covering my ears. What ring type are you talking about

I couldn't wear used headphones, the thought of bugs crawling out into my ears gives me the willys, not that is very likely. A bit like wearing used swimming trunks.

So a soft foam unlike the originals that were unbearable for any length of time.

I can't tell it apart from the official Grado ones that come in that same shape on the more expensive phones. The key thing s that they don't seem to press on your ear on the same way or in the same places. The flat Grado ones supplied with SR 60 and 80 are very uncomfortable and they also muffle the sound. Getting shot of them lifts the cheaper Grados towards the performance of the more expensive ones as Afr as I'm concerned.

I use the Sennheiser yellow foam pads (spares for HD4OO/414) - They don't heat up my ears/make them itch as much as the Grado originals or the "doughnuts" which I have also tried.
