Good grief! These cables are the bees knees.

I apologise in advance for using quite hackneyed lingo but it is difficult to find different language to describe what I'm hearing.

Just as a point of reference I have placed these cables between a DAC (Metrum HEX) and an integrated amp (Sugden Masterclass) driving Tannoy Eatons. Source is a mixture of Redbook and high res.

Anyway these cables open up the door a lot. Like going from a single door to bi-fold doors reaching across the building. Height and width of the sound is extended. Excellent depth as well so overall soundstage very realistic.

Nicely rounded across the range. Bass and treble 'makes sense', midrange sits well and is engaging. Whilst cables are ruthlessly analytical they are not glaring or digital sounding. Very organic analogue 'valve' texture. Be prepared for these cables to take no prisoners if presented with a poorly recorded track. What I'm enjoying in particular is the amount of micro detail these cables are able to grab. Essentially the cables get out of the way and let the music flow effortlessly.

Really excellent Oli. If you packaged them up in a classy box you would be able to sell them for 'hundreds', the prices you quoted earlier in this thread are a steal.

I've sent a PM to next in line (shazam/Nigel) asking for postal details.

There are no plans for fancy boxes or £££'s per pair. These will be offered at the forum price for as long as I am graciously allowed by Marco.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and doing a writeup. A good one too [emoji6]

Edward, what an endearingly middle classed analogy!

These interconnects sound very interesting and at the price quoted, appealing.

I can confirm these cables are bloody amazing.

Until I heard the Spotfires I've never been convinced that cables make that much difference ...at least not in this price range.

As soon as I plugged them in I couldn't believe the instant difference in soundstage and separation. On most albums I played they made a difference in separating out the instruments so nobody was 'stood in front of anyone else'. Often new details could be heard on tracks I've heard many times before.

On some music they also brighten things up a bit. So I tried them on some duller sounding records like the Black Uhuru Live album that I've had for about 30 years and sounds like it was recorded from outside the venue. The Spotfires didn't totally transform it but they gave it some life and made it sound more real than ever before.

The most impressive moment using them was when listening to the Ten Years After live album. The crowd noise before the encore actually sounded like a load of individual people clapping and shouting, not a mushed blur like you normally hear.

Suffice to say I can't recommend them highly enough. I've already ordered a pair from Oliver which the postie tried to deliver today.

Who is next on the list? Can you pm me your address and I'll get them sent to you, you lucky bugger.

Well, I picked my new Spotfires up from the post office yesterday (Cheers Oliver).

Can I just ask the forum's thoughts on cable burn in?

When I have burnt new interconnects in before I have usually connected between source and amp, and left the source running for days (such as a CD player on repeat) but with the amp volume turned down.

I would prefer not to leave my valve amp on for days on end, so does it matter if the amp is turned off altogether? If it does need to be switched on I've got an old amp in the loft I could use if needed.

Any thoughts on this?

well ive just heard oilvers cables thanks to steve popping over,(nice to meet you mate).
all i can say is i shall be buying some in the near future!
i use the Sommer Carbokab cable with ms starline plugs which in my system bettered the klotz mc5000.
the first track on the album by yello called toy i could hear the female singing move forward with better clarity.swapping back to the sommer cable she retreats towards the back of my soundstage,i tried this 3 times and it kept happening.

i dont know what thats called in audiophile terms but i like it a lot!

im very impressed oli, well done mate :)

Newbie here and was wondering if I ask nicely; may I be added to the list please?
I've been using a Mark Grant G1000HD for ages and recently stumbled on a flat grey cable I had stashed in a box I was given years ago! This older cable blew the M Grant into the weeds. Would be very interested to see if my system can handle further improvements or not. Are the loaners 1M ones?
Thanks...

This is strange as I cant find any record of anyone in Dover ever buying this cable, when did you buy it and what's your real name ? ( so that I can check my records)

Also a bit strange that you joined this forum on 31st March 2018 just to post in this thread and criticise me

I will PM you in due time Mark Grant with my address details where I purchased your cable, I in fact purchased one then the other as an upgrade. I'm not obviously going to post personal details on an open Forum.
As to your last comments, steady on fella. Where did I criticise you? I stated that I had a cable that I felt was better than yours, a bit tetchy there to insinuate anything other than personal preference. I will happily edit my initial post so as to make you feel less 'abused' as I quite appreciate the efforts you put in to cable manufacture and normally vote with my wallet. I am of course open to newer and quite possibly better options, I believe it's called choice?
On a different fact, I didn't join this Forum just to take a 'pop' at you or your manufacturing, I joined to see and enjoy another Forum. I am mainly on 'The Wam' with currently 5857 posts until I post in a while on the 'Cockpunching thread' about people too quick to jump to conclusions!

However, as I work alot, I don't always get a huge amount of time to spend hours on both Forums, I just feel more comfortable over there as I know it more and people know me. In time, I'm sure my post count will rise and I have already met up with a regular on here, which was most enjoyable. So Mr Grant, kindly back the f*** away for I haven't crossed any line.
On a separate note, as you feel the need to defend your honour, could you kindly explain here or via PM why the cable I purchased several years ago now, has plugs that state G1500HD and cable core that has G1000HD on its outer?
Kind regards,
Ade / Parcelmonkey

Addendum: All I wanted to do is add info to state that the flat grey cable (home-made no branding) was more open and detailed than the G1500HD but with quite pronounced sibilance so whilst it blew the Mark Grant cable out of the weeds in some respects it didn't in others and I feel the Mark Grant cable is a more rounded design.

Thanks...Any idea what the flat cable is called? For the record I bought a 0.5m MG digital cable off ebay for about £10. It was copper weave under a clear sheath. I took it to a mate's and compared to a £100 (s/h) cable and it came close so is now my cable of choice.

Hi Ade,

Aside from Mark's uncharacteristically tetchy response to your previous post, which I agree was uncalled for, I'm afraid that regardless of that, we don't address each other like this on AoS (see text in bold):

That sort of abrasive/ill-tempered reaction towards other members may be allowed on Wigwam, but not here, so please remember that in future.

Therefore, whilst you have cause to be disappointed with Mark's response to your remarks about his cables, it doesn't entitle you to subsequently go off on one (overreacting somewhat, as demonstrated above), and make the situation worse.

In that respect, please take your dispute with Mark to PM, where I hope you can resolve your differences, and let's get the thread back on topic (about SPOTFIRE). Cheers!

Agreed and understood. Apologies for my outburst, what is okay on one Forum obviously isn't allowed on another and I respect that. Hand duly smacked...
Back to the thread, unfortunately I have no idea what the flat cable is, it was made by a Lecturer in Physics who was heavily in to Naim gear. I befriended him when I was studying Sports Nutrition at College as a Mature Student.
The cable was more open and detailed in many respects than the Mark Grant G1000HD I have but does suffer with a little sibilance on my Linn DS. Currently I have the Linn blacks and I'm keen to hear any differences with the Spotfire.
The only thing I don't know about the cable is its price? - No need, I just re-read pages again...

On a separate note, as you feel the need to defend your honour, could you kindly explain here or via PM why the cable I purchased several years ago now, has plugs that state G1500HD and cable core that has G1000HD on its outer?
Kind regards,
Ade / Parcelmonkey

I believe the G1500HD is the same cable (G1000HD) but with Neutrik plugs. The standard G1000HD has Canare plugs. The G2000HD has WBT plugs.

Spotfires are now with me, will take a listen this week and post on by the end of.

Agreed and understood. Apologies for my outburst, what is okay on one Forum obviously isn't allowed on another and I respect that. Hand duly smacked...

Haha, just amended my post as you posted. I re-read the threads beginning again... :)

I've just PM'd Simon as I will be unavailable after the 31st for a while. If Simon believes time might be an issue for him, I don't want to take listening time away from him then he's to bypass me and bump up to the next. Hopefully I can jump back in upon my return?

If it can stay as we are, then brilliant but just giving everyone who's patiently waiting in line a heads up...

Thanks to Oliver for the loan on these cables. I have now posted them on to Ade. I tried them out against my Mark Grant HDX1 cables and from my ears they are extremely close in sound. I placed the Spotfires between my passive pre and power amp. All other cables in the preceding chain are HDX1's. The Spotfires for me gave the sound a very slight boost in the highs and I feel the vocals on music I tried were ever so slightly more forward. Detail wise I struggled to hear anything extra over the HDX1 and soundstage seemed identical to me.

The cables are solid in construction and I like the KLE plugs used, they have a nice tight fit. Would be interesting to see how it would sound if all cables in my system were changed to Spotfires, just to see whether there would be bigger gains.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts on the cables.

It's always difficult when there are different cables in the chain so the difference may not always be AS apparent or as easy to identify what is doing what, but that's the issue with only having one pair of loaners.

Received the cables today; many thanks Simon, all nicely boxed up & will recycle this again, it's a good solid box!

Only managed a small listen in the last hour but things are immediately apparent. One big thing I noticed and wonder if anyone can clarify? I need more volume on my EAR integrated than normal. Is this down to cable impedance possibly? I know nothing about electrics especially anything to do with Hi-Fi...
My normal interconnect of choice is Linn Blacks from the Linn Akurate streamer direct to the amp.

Now this volume change is no bad thing, I was able to listen to my tunes with volume playing at over 2 o' clock on the amp. Clear and detailed, something I haven't been able to do before. It was mostly playing acoustic vocal / guitar and on my phone app was registering around 85-90db.

A really clear and detailed sound.

I will be having a proper session Sunday with Mark Grant G1500HD's, Linn Blacks and the mystery grey flat cable mentioned before. I'll attempt to post a picture of this cable too if code is okay to be posted direct to the thread via Imgur?

Could JohnG make PM with their address as I will send on to you Wed 29th as I will be unavailable after the 31st. I've been messaged by docp to say he needs to be bumped down a place as he's unable to take delivery. He'll need them afterwards as I'm sure he won't want to miss out.

Until then...

Would JohnG please respond and PM their address details for moving these wonderful cables on.

Equipment used, Linn Akurate DS0/1 with uprated board. EAR 834 Integrated. Impulse Lali speakers. Spotfire Cables and Black Rhodium Jive speaker cable. CD player used is an Arcam Alpha 5 with Avondale Engineering mods recently purchased. Room isn't big at around 11' x 13' with speakers about 2M apart and similar distance to listening spot. Room isn't fully treated but has some, with improvements still needed. Therefore not a perfect listening environment.

Okay. First impressions were great, as already mentioned the sound was nice and clear and detailed.

I have listened to the Spotfires a lot this Sunday and they are great. Not perfect, what is?! This was done on the Linn streamer to get used to them.

Pros/ A lovely more forward presentation, detailed and tight bass control. I felt that bass was tighter and although certain tracks can excite the room with bass bloom, it was definitely less apparent with the Spotfires. Brings more depth to the sound-stage and keeps busy music under control. In fact, this was the biggest plus point to me, how controlled everything was compared to other cables I own. I could turn the wick far higher on my EAR amp than ever before, nothing sounded as compressed or harsh with music not of great recordings which is most of my library and I was quite concerned I'd blow speakers! I bottled it at around 100db as it was a Sunday & I live in a block of flats... :stalks:

:eyebrows:

Con/ There was a tiny amount of sibilance apparent on some music I tried through either the Linn streamer or CD player. This happens on other cables as well. I'm investigating whether electronic noise is getting in to the digital domain somewhere but clearly I'm no expert.
Otherwise very little to distract from a lovely well constructed cable.

To summarise, I like these cables a lot, so far the best I have tried. I'd like to take my time; maybe speaking to Oliver via PM to see if I can experiment more with different speaker cable to see if I can lose that small amount of sibilance & try them against other i/c's available but I will definitely be voting with my wallet.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Other cables I tried these against -
Linn Blacks
Mark Grant G1500HD
A DIY cable which is very flat & grey? (name unknown)

This test was putting them against other cables I currently own on one CD only and it's a harsh one! The reason I've done this, the results are blindingly obvious.

Music track was 'Girl From Mars' - ASH, Intergalactic Sonic 7's a very harsh sounding CD with this track having a dynamic range as shown on Foobar as 5 which is pretty poor.

https://img.discogs.com/PbH3vDNFMDLdXFJ0OeBiARcABOo=/fit-in/600x597/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():qualit y(90)/discogs-images/R-1260847-1487415535-8482.jpeg.jpg

There was very little between the Mark Grant & Linn Blacks with the Mark Grant sounding a little less forward than the Linn blacks but also less sibilant so it was a case of which presentation you'd prefer.

The flat grey was more obvious in its presentation being more forward than all the others, very detailed but just too sibilant for my liking.
All these cables were too busy though with this music at 85-90db constant volume, I didn't change volume at all and kept the same line out on the amp, changing cables in between.

The Spotfires did exactly the same as before, music flowed more naturally, bass was tight, less noticeable in sound-stage difference probably due to differences between the two players and way more controlled. i could actually listen to the whole of the track whereas the other cables it was too loud to really enjoy & the music was not separated out sufficiently...

A picture below of the flat grey cable in case anyone knows what it might be?

Many thanks to Oliver for the loan and once I return to the Forum after a little break I'll be in touch. Thanks...Thanks for this very good review. It certainly sounds like you've been thorough!!

If there are no further volunteers to listen to the cables when this group has finished, I am happy to let you loan them for a couple of weeks so you can experiment with your speaker cables. Obviously, if someone else wants to be added to the list, the cables will continue doing the loan scheme. We can make time at the end though.

Oliver.

I am trialing all different cables at present, I could put the Spotfires into the medley, but my evaluation would be
unsure, as I am not familiar enough or settled on a particular arrangement yet.
It will be better for me to decline the trial period allocated and request a opportunity at a later date, when I can fully determine how the cables perform as a comparison to my chosen cable arrangements.
I think this is the fairest way to go forward.

Hi Oli,
A Temporary removal from the list will make it easier to manage.
I will let you know when I am in a position to add your cables to my set up and have time to assess on the influence of the Spotfires.
FWIW, I am getting the most appealing to my ear, from my system at present with Van Damme Silver Low Cap, 1 mtr length. These are giving better results than 0.5mtr Chord Crimson and 1mtr Ecosse CA1 Conductor.
The most noticeable is the influence between SUT and DIGNA.
I intend to take the Van Damme cable further and introduce it to the Phonostage + AVC .
The AVC to monoblocks is 1.8 mtr Klotz MC5000.
I have a Mapleshade Clearview Digital Ribbon bought to support the DAC, it has RCA's so I will be plugging this in at differing positions to get the feel for this type of Interconnect as well.

No worries at all. I'll take you off. Just let me know when it suits. If the loan scheme is concluded we can sort something out.

I made a pair of VD lowcap cables a while back. They are the only cable VD make that I liked. What I suggest may be happening is that they are helping with the veiled nature of the Klotz.

I've done extensive research in the cabling area and whilst I can see the benefit of a cheap but good cable like the Klotz, it is soundly beaten by Sommer Carbocab 225.

If you fancy a cheap to make cable, give that a go and see how you feel about the Klotz after. If you need a pair building, let me know.

When you're settled, you can borrow a pair or two of SPOTFIRE and you can then see how you feel about the 225 after that. [emoji6]

To be honest, that's not far off the path that took me to this point as far as copper cables go. I tried Mark Grant stuff, Nordorst, Chord etc too.

Oliver.

I’m thinking of re-cabling after recent addition of monoblocs. My hifi cabinet is to one side and I could place the monoblocs under the speakers if I had long (4m + 2m) interconnects and short 1m speaker cables. I guess long interconnects would need to be quite low capacitance and am thinking of using Neotech NEI-3001 mkIII with with some msaudio rhodium rca’s I have. Would the Spotfire cables be a good alternative for long cables - any other suggestions also welcome. My preamp is a Croft Epoch and speakers are Troels design SBA MW19 - quite evenly voiced and balanced sounding monitors.

You need to decide what you want from the cable because everything about it will be an influence. Dielectric, conductor material, length, RCA plugs, it all makes a difference.

Personally, I don't like silver plated cable, I doubt the HF to be exaggerated on nearly all the ones I tried but I never tried this one so can't say.

Silver cable, in my opinion, is very difficult to get right. Again, I've never had a silver cable I liked. I've tried a lot of them too.

My personal opinion is that a cable with the least amount of "imperfections" in the conductor will do a better job than a cable that's intrinsically flawed in its conductor material. I also don't like cables with with small conductors.

The SPOTFIRE were specially selected because they tick all of my requirements.

I haven't made a pair that are 4m long and therefore I haven't got an idea about the Capacitance of the cables, I can find out though.

If you want a seriously low capacitance cable, there's Van Damme LO-CAP & Sommer carbokab which tick the boxes.

You're welcome to join the loan list for the SPOTFIRE but they are 1m long so may not work out.

Can't see any reason for them not to be ok at 4m as long as the preamp is active.

The signature of a Spotfire cable will likely be similar for a 1m or 4m cable, so it would still be great to try before I buy. Please add me to the loan list too.

I've had the Spotfire interconnects in my system for a few days now giving me the chance to have a good listen to what they do. Firstly I must point out I'm using a new amp so I'm quite tuned in to any changes at the moment. On opening the box the first thing to strike me about the Spotfires was the quality of construction and finish. Once plumbed in my first impressions were the extra detail after the Sommer Cabokab/MS Audio cable I had been using. There was a definite increase in depth of detail, the definition in female vocals, the clarity of higher range percussion instruments and an overall sense of control. I also thought there was less "shrillness" to some vocals, Janis Joplin especially. So, would I buy them, definitely yes, watch your inbox for my order Oliver.

I've just had a go on these cables and I've ordered some.

I hate cables and discussing cables and trying cables, I'm a massive sceptic and I think most of what gets said about cables is total bollocks. But I can't deny that there is something to these that I like.

It is difficult to make any meaningful comments about cables, very hard to quantify one's thoughts. I still find it hard to believe that cables make such a difference, obviously cheap and nasty IC's will be shown up by even budget cables and of course the law of diminishing returns kicks in once you start spending larger sums. However I do think the Spotfire cables are a good upgrade from Klotz or Sommer, I can't compare anything else as I've not heard them. But like Martin says so much bollocks is said so it's best to try things out for yourself.

I'm a sceptic about everything :)

Ever since I did an interconnect blind test thinking it would be pretty easy but being horrified to discover the big differences became teeny-tiny when I didn't know which one I was listening to, I always take a big pinch of salt with these things.

ok so i have the loan spotfire interconnects here,
im already using the tonearm version of the spotfire, all be it not properly bedded in yet,id say about 6hrs use so far.
ive stuck the loan spotfire pair last in the chain, going from my pre amp to the amp, between this is one pair of sommer cables connecting my head amp to the pre.

once again ive found another step up,im listen to a lot of julian bream at the moment and i can say that i noticed some more clarity coming through, the acoustic guitar twang and finger plucks in particular, finger slides have become quite realistic, not that they wern't before but now they are a joy too hear, all adding to that 'he's in the room' experience.im not there yet i should say but i feel these cables are a step in the right direction.

oliver told me you can hear a difference with each interconnect thats replaced and so far i agree.
if you own a set of these cables you need 2 sets lol
they are without doubt the best cables ive used to date.

another order coming your way soon mate. nice one!

What was interesting was when I took the Spotfires out of my system and put the Sommers back in I really noticed the missing detail. When you put a new piece of equipment in your set up for the first time you're listening for every difference and might even kid yourself you're hearing improvements but going back to the old cables with no expectation the differences become very obvious. Keep an eye on that inbox Oliver.

In all seriousness, it is usually the case that when i take something out for the new item, then put the old thing back after a few hours, that I realise what it brought (or didn't) to the performance.

I think the Aeco plugs are better than the KLE Harmony.

As the term 'better' has a broad meaning, and as I am making a decision to purchase
KLE Silver or Aeco Silver.
Can a description be supplied of what it is believed to make one Brand surpass the other.
If seems that an answer will become a detractor from the Spotfire Feed Back, can a reply be put up elsewhere or even as a PM.

CageyH

To my ears, they sound better when used with my cables. However, they may not "match" the cable used for the Spotfire as well as the KLE, so it is best that Oliver responds.
Note: They are more expensive than the KLE.

Bigman80
07-10-2018, 13:15
Kevin, John,

The cables were tested with a lot of different plugs. One I did try was a KLE Pure Silver plug. I haven't tried the AECO pure silver but have tried the Silver plated AECO which perform almost as well as the KLE. I also have Eichmann Bullet plugs with gold plating and a pair or DIY exposed copper Eichmann bullet plugs which are very good too. MSAudio use the AECO connector but make their own body. It's Aeco branded on the connector though so buy theirs, they are cheaper!!!

The reason KLE copper Harmony were chosen was due to synergy. There appears to be a bit of magic when the SPOTFIRE are coupled to the Copper Harmony plugs.

The other reason was the AECO pure silver plugs are around £129 for a set of four compared to £50 for the KLE, couple that with some silver solder of significant quality, WBT or Audio Note, and you already have a significantly more expensive cable.

To make SPOTFIRE with the AECO pure silver plugs, the cost would be around £227.59 per meter pair.

Whilst my tests with the KLE Silver Harmony plugs did demonstrate a slightly more extended HF, they lost some of the natural tonal balance the SPOTFIRE demonstrate with the Copper Harmony plugs. Some people may prefer it but I dont.

The difference, in my opinion, wasn't worth the extra £80 but if someone wants that I am happy to make it. I don't want to spend £129 on plugs but luckily I didn't have to, a purchased pair were built with the Silver harmony.

The SPOTFIRE with KLE copper Harmony plugs are my favourite version of the cable and for £140 I think they represent a bit of a bargain. You won't get this quality of materials or build for the price anywhere else unless you ask Brian to build you some cables, Or you make them yourself.

I'm told proper companies (Rega, Chord etc) regularly charge 400% more than the build price. That's £400+ for a pair of SPOTFIRE by that logic lol

I tried pure silver KLEs and Silver Harmony KLE plugs and AECO silver plated plugs. The pure Silver are KLEs own silver blend version and there was some debate about its quality online. Some even suggesting it was only silver plated. All I can tell you is, I made cables with them all for customers and the differences between the KLE silver versions were very slight and again very slight with the AECO. I felt the AECO didn't quite match the KLEs in space and air, sounding a bit thicker but like I said, it's a personal taste and synergy thing.

AECO make a Pure silver plug, I haven't tried them. The design differs to that of the KLE.

KLE use a method of keeping the two terminals as far apart as possible. The AECO are closer to the Eichmann Bullet plug. Whether it makes a lot of difference in real terms, I don't know. Again, my experience is that between the KLE Silver Harmony, Pure Silver, Copper Harmony and the Eichmann Bullet plugs I prefered the Copper Harmony on the SPOTFIRE and I was happy to go with whatever I prefered regardless of the cost.

AECO are good plugs and build quality is excellent. Alan (Firebottle) has MSAudio plugs (exactly the same connector made by the same company) on some of his SPOTFIRE cables and they sound great too.

Are you sure Aeco are made by the same company as MS Audio?
The connector is pretty much identical, so it could be.

£67.50 for 4 ARP-4055 is a good price. AT such a discount, I would be wondering if this was a reliable source though.

The reliability of the source is always to be questioned when importing from overseas.
I am willing to take a punt, I have not been caught yet.
If I do go for the Aeco's I might send them onto Oli, 'if he is willing' to put them to the test before I put them to use, he has a much better experience than my own, with analytically assessing the effects.
I could then see how my listening experience relates using his as a reference.

Post 26 of this thread shows the AECO name clearly displayed in the MSAudio plug. When i spoke to MSAudio, they said they used AECO connector. MS Audio plugs are £15? the AECO are £40. Makes them great value although the body doesnt look as good, they have the same level of performance. Personally, i go for the plastic body version if i need a cheap high quality plug.

I prefer the KLE but am happy to try the Pure Silver AECO if John wants to send or bring a set over.

The first two lines are contradictory......sterling silver is 92.5% silver not 99.9%.

It does seem questionable that the statement "electroless plating" is used, to my knowledge (only nanoparticle deposition on PET can be considered electroless deposition) the only way to silver plate is with electrolysis. Is the inference that they are solid? Why not state so?

Oli, if I were to oblige your offer, the day would end up in a Power Amp Bake Off, 'Cos' my mono's will be on board to be hooked up to your pre amp.
I'm keen to here a device without such a large amount of copper in the signal path.
Off Topic,
One Slagle owner investigating a previous Slagle owners discoveries.
I've been in discussion about the Slagle, and as a result, had a alternative description of the Slagle, and that is, 'it is not designed to work as a conventional pre amp, but more of a attenuator, that will filter out frequencies, this filtering can be perceived as a improved presentation'.
Just maybe that is why there are questions about the bass.
The individual who described this function to me claimed a set of measurements could be taken from the Slagle to identify the filtered out frequencies, and a simple switchable device could be put together which will have a similar effect.
My mono's are incredibly revealing, the engineer informed me they had shown the noise from the laptop battery, when hooked up to a oscilloscope.

Hi John,

That's fine by me!!! :D Id love to hear your amplifiers and I'm sure you'd enjoy the Krell too.

The Slagle was a really enjoyable Preamp but there is no doubt in my mind that the DCB1 is more transparent.

Drop me a PM if you fancy a day up here and we'll sort something out.

Sorry Oliver as I've only just seen this. It's been quite a week! As you can see they were passed on some time back. I'm also tardy in writing up a small review so here's a couple of thoughts on the Spotfire's quality.
I have a fair few expensive cables but took an interest in Oliver's Spotfires as I am looking for a bespoke length. I have also recently invested in a similar cable from Oliver for my tonearm (Jelco on a LP12) which I am very satisfied with. To listen to the quality of the Spotfires I, rather unfairly, removed my Transparent Audio Ultra cable (current retail £1400ish) from between my Modwright LS36.5 and my Auralic Vega DAC. The Ultras are the best cable I have ever had in my system and unsurprisingly beat off the competition from this cheap usurper. However, to suggest they were 10 times better is simply ridiculous. The Ultras had a little more definition when tracks became heavier and more complicated. One such track which highlighted this was a song by New Model Army which had a second bassline beneath the surface and the Ultras kept this in good order while the Spotfires muddied this somewhat. The Ultras also appeared to have slightly better overall definition within the lower regions but this was rather marginal. On simpler tracks like a lot of my favoured acoustic ones, the Spotfires held their own and provided excellent tonal balance.
I believe Oliver deserves a lot of credit for his achievements with this cable which is a veritable bargain. Perhaps I should place my order quickly before he reads this and puts his prices up!!!

Hi Lionel,

Thanks for taking the time mate. It's appreciated.

The Transparent Audio Ultra cable aren't ones I've heard of, but then of they are over £300 I won't have [emoji23]

The price will remain the same for forum members, regardless of however good they are deemed to be.

This is possibly the toughest test yet. I'll have to research the cable you use and see where the difference lies.

Thanks again!!!

****

For Anyone wondering, the SPOTFIRE tonearm cable is made from a smaller core version of the cable that has the same materials used in the SPOTFIRE Interconnects.

I should really set a price for those and advertise them [emoji38]

I could be tempted to make a loaner if there was any interest.

Having lived with the cables for about a week or so, here are my thoughts.
Firstly like the look of them and very impressed by the standard and they fitted really into my Primare amp and phono stage.
From the off, it was not night and day between them and my usual cables. But was impressed by the soundstage and the placement of the instruments, all clearly defined.
Also liked the bass control not easy in my listening room.
Once I have my replacement CD player in my system hopefully in the next few days, I will evaluate the current cables again and make a decision on Oliver’s cables.
Thanks to Oliver for the loan much appreciated.

A bit more feedback from my inbox:

"I've had two nights to listen to the Spotfire. I compared them with my Black Cat Neo Morpheus which retailed for around £200 new and run them between my DAC and preamp, so running a full line signal and therefore quicker to settle down.

They were remarkably close in performance.

From my notes:

Midrange detail was equal with both - highly focussed and projected sound, vivid detail, beautiful vocal quality. Liquid, non-harsh, musical, rhythmic.

Soundstage was as close as to make no difference - huge, extending outside of both speakers and depth well behind the plane of the speakers. The sound of the recording space was very easy to hear, and air movements easily discerned.

Sparkle - here I found the Black Cat very marginally superior, but it was a small difference. Detail in castanets, bells, blocks, triangles etc. just a touch more prominent.

Bass power and extension - here the Spotfire had just the slightest more foundation and tightness creating really excellent power in the music.

It's hard even determining the above, so close are they in their performance. I did go back to my Yannis for a baseline check, and they both easily outperform them.

In absolute terms they are very good cables capable of holding their own in a high-end system.

At £140 they are very good value indeed. Not sure about RRP of the Black Cat Neo Morpheus. Mine cost me £109 used. The Yannis were around £280 some years ago."

I am just warming things up at the moment
Fairport convention (BE9102015) The Bonny bunch of roses

The spotfire is taking over from the Klotz that at the time compared to my older cables " was like taking a curtain from in front of the speakers"

It does not take long to ear the difference between Klotzand the spotfire it seem brighter and forward but the big difference is in the small details notes decay last longher an there is a lot more detail

*****ANNOUNCEMENT!*****

Well, either blame it on Brexit or on the popularity of the SPOTFIRE cables ([emoji38]) but the cost of KLE plugs has risen from £50 to £65!!

I can't find them any cheaper than that. I am faced with having to raise the price on the SPOTFIRE or swap to the far less attractive version on the plug. (PIC included)

From a personal perspective, I'm greatly disappointed by this but also acknowledge that even though the aesthetics of the cable may be effected, the performance won't be. However, I may take this opportunity to try and find a plug of equal performance for a bit less money.

SO, while I can get the ugly plug (now known as) they will remain at £140 per 1m pair.

If you want the pretty ones, it's going to be £155 per 1m pair.

I'll keep you all updated on the search for a new plug.

KLE ulglies

All in use.

Hi all,

Well, after 10 months of this loan scheme, the cables are finally on their way back to me. They are going to be retired from the loan scheme as they've covered hundreds of miles, and been in lots of different systems. They definitely need a health check!!

If there is further interest, i will make them available again.

Feedback has been recieved and the response to these cables has been very positive.

Overall, my hope was to help people get more from their system and provide an option to try a cable without any obligation to buy. I think that has been achieved and I think a few have benefited from the scheme.

I am currently working on a lower budget version of this cable. I know, lower budget!! I have a cable candidate in mind, along with RCAs and will hopefully make them available to loan in the new year.

I also have a new cable in the pipeline that I expect to improve on the already excellent performance of the the SPOTFIRE. Again, if funds allow and if there is any interest, I will set up a loan scheme for these too.

Early signs are very positive performance wise.

The SPOTFIRE cables will remain available to buy, so if you want a pair, let me know. I may even put them on eBay in the new year for a giggle. I have a couple of m's of the cable left so stay tuned. I may throw out a couple of discounted pairs for sale. Christmas spirit and all that!

I just want to thank everyone who has contributed to the thread and taken the time to listen to them.

I'd especially like to thank those of you who voted with your wallets.

Thank you.

A few weeks ago I bought a decent length of cable I *hoped* would be good enough to make into a lower budget version of the SPOTFIRE cable.

After three weeks, it finally landed.

I set about making a pair of interconnects. Rather than go for a 1m pair, I went for a 2.5m pair which I thought might do for between the DCB1 and the Krell.

First impressions:

Flat, dead and completely uninspiring.

Shit!

I like to listen to a freshly constructed cable then remove it whilst it burns in on an old system I have in the garage.

10hours later:

Hmm, not as bad! Treble had extended a little and the mids opened up a wee bit too.

Encouraging

30hrs:

Bright!!!! Treble is very extended but left the mids and bass behind.

50hrs:

Ah! Smoother and far better balanced. This is more like what I was expecting. Soundstaging is now far more 3D and it's no longer flat. Sounding very dynamic and energetic but with no nasties. Good stuff!

100hrs:

Its fairly safe to safe to say this is usually when I stop noticing big changes and things may change but very subtly.

I've now played about 10 albums and compared them with the SPOTFIRE. It's safe to say that this cable is actually incredibly close in terms of resolution and detail retrieval. They sound very transparent and I am feeling very confident that they are not giving much away to the SPOTFIRE.

Cool!!

I'll do more listening and comparisons but I am very happy with the results.
