One time, in the dim and distant past, I drove down to the Spar for a loaf or something, and walked back. When I got home, I immediately noticed that the car was missing.

First thought was that it had been stolen. I ran into the house to tell the missus, whose (who's?) reply was "you drove it to the shops, you donkey, and where's the milk you went for?"

Over the years my memory has let me down many times, my work colleagues just think it's funny and sometimes a pain, and the missus worries about me a bit.

I'm hoping there may be others here with similar stories, so I can go "look, it's not just me".

Help!

I clipper my hair about every 4 or 5 weeks, what bit there is. Her indoors thinks I'm joking when I say "leave it another week till the weather gets warmer". Even though there's next to no hair, I can still feel the cold when it's cut.

I don't mind at all being a slap-head, but it was horrible when it started going. You'd bend down to pick something up, and someone would say, "Eeh, you're going a bit thin on top", and you just want to slap them.

Baldies like to say, "Grass doesn't grow on a busy road". My road is certainly busy, and no-ones obeying the highway code.

Long term memory will keep us entertained in our dotage, but not much use in the here and now. When I'm asked if I remembered to put the bins out, it's no good saying "Not sure, but give it a few years and it'll come back to me". Binmen are long gone by then

I do think older men look better with short hair, even if they've still got most of it. I recently tried on a hair extension belonging to one of my daughters. It wasn't a good look. She took a picture, but fortunately I don't know how to put pictures on here.

Not really that surprising given the whole point of having hair is to insulate your head from the cold. Unless you think evolution is a crock and God just added it because he thought it looked good.

Lol - it's a serious moaning 'old farts' thread - that's what it is! :wheniwasaboy:

I still have a pretty retentive memory (especially for stuff that really interests me), both short and long term. Interesting that taking bins out was mentioned, as it's our bin day tomorrow, and as soon as my wife came in from work I reminded her that the bins needed going out for collection.

So we took them out (we always do it together, as with all the recycling bits, there are umpteen items to carry, including the main 'named' bin this week, and our driveway is about 300 yards long, so it's quicker if we take it all out together!):)

No, at 52 I'm not quite ready for the knackers yard yet...:eyebrows:

The hair may be receding, but I've always kept it short (never had long hair in my life), and what's there is still naturally dark brown (albeit it with a few grey flecks here and there), but mostly still brown, and my eyesight is good (no need yet to wear glasses), and my hearing is near perfect. I even still have all my own teeth!:D

No, I'm generally in very good health, with no aches and pains to speak of (take no tablets for any ailments), don't drink to excess, or smoke, and am reasonably fit, as I power walk for up to 8 miles every day. I don't really feel my age at all, and indeed pretty much the same (and in some ways better) as I did when I was 35. I also think and behave like a much younger person.

I guess it's the healthy diet, positive mental attitude (always been a cheery, 'glass half full' person), low-stress lifestyle, and Italian genes! ;)

I think we all walk into the next room and wonder why we came? I’ve done that my whole life. But it’s not so much bad memory, as just the fact our minds are on a deeper plain. We are too busy contemplating which stylus tracks the groove walls more like a cutter head, or if a certain length cable will reduce jitter to be bothered with every day notions. Personally I hate to loose things, I will go nuts trying to find it, I do believe that items slip off into another dimension, and return later, sometimes.

Back in the seventies, on one of my visits to friends in Ullapool, I had a night of passion with my mate's sister. The next morning we were all sat around the table having breakfast.

I had a massive "love bite" on my neck, which I was trying hard to conceal. But the girl's mum was watching me closely, with a smirk on her face. Has she noticed it, and why does she seem ok with it?

I'm busy trying to eat my breakfast, hide the love bite and be cool about it. But that strange smile is bothering me.

"Steve," she finally says, "Do you normally eat your shredded wheat with a knife and fork?"

I think men's brains really are only wired for one thing at a time.

I have a terrible short term memory and its been getting to the stage where I will have a sudden thought then when I get to the next room I cant remember what I went into the room for. Ive done it twice in a row on several occassions. Its more scatty thought when I am in a rush or a bit stressed.

I could watch certain films and can not remember the name of key characters when asked soon afterwards. Its like the information isnt really going in and Im not processing it properly

It usually takes me two goes when Im meeting people for the first time. The name is mentioned and then I usually have to ask again and then go into a corner and say to myself its Dave... Dave... Dave the rave to drum it in with some word association :D

Its more that I have a selective memory and I do learn an revise fairly well. I worry that dementia is setting in because Im defo getting worse :)

I love watching Pointless but I find names a struggle to get hold of lol
I get a sort of brain freeze myself when I must suddenly ask myself for someones first name , upon meeting them ,(and I know full well I SHOULD be able to trip it off the top of my head because I have known them for so long !!! )
I had a laughable moment a yr or so ago . Went to Wrexham for footie match . I park on the main Wrexham rd and meet my mates for a lift (or take them )
This one night it was ruddy cold , so had lots of small layers and loads of pockets !! It was my turn for not driving ,so left car in lay by. Keys were memorised (again again and agian ) as being in right jeans pocket
Tidy!
During the half time I went to the bar and purchased a pint for my mates .
Much later , my mate drops me off at the car , he drives off , and I cant find the keys in my jeans!!!!!!! Panic sets in and after rifling through all of my pockets (around twenty odd ) no keys !! No phone , aw shit !!
Walked the 4 miles home and as I got 200 yds from the back door , had another seemingly fruitless ferret through my pockets again ,and what I thought was just my dab radio , was , as I pulled it out ,was my dab radio and a set of keys tangled up in the headphones

The exercise did me good :)

Sometimes when I'm posting something on here, I may need to include the name of someone in a previous post. But I can't remember his name, so I have to leave my post to find the name.

If I do this too quickly, everything I have typed is lost. But if I hang on for a minute, my text is 'auto-saved'.

Perhaps our brains work a little like that, in that anything we may wish to recall needs some time to auto-save. In my case this function needs a few months to kick in.

Sorry Geoff, I understood not one bit of that statement.

Other stuff that is beyond me:

Posting pictures. I'm dreading the day when I may want to sell something, and have to include pics. The instructions provided in one of the 'stickies' may be helpful to anyone with a bit of technical nouse, but it just makes my brain hurt.

The little picture next to your username. Looks cool, but also looks difficult.

Quoting part of a previous post rather than the whole thing. Sometimes it's even in bold. Witchcraft!

I'll get there eventually, but these things I need to be told ten times before my 'autosave' kicks in.

alphaGT

Ah yes, the auto save! I’ve learned long ago, the stuff we take great interest in, we devour all the information we can get on the subject! But take a subject that we are not really interested in, and poof! It is thrown out with the bath water. So, you remember what a person said about the angle of the cantilever on their cartridge, but you can’t recall their name! Funny that. Selective memories, seem to get more and more selective as we get older. I know mine is. Whatever your name was?.....

Maybe the 'neural pathways' in our brains get more clogged by a lifetime of thoughts and memories.

My neural pathways have contraflows, speed restrictions in place and lots of cones. But not a workman in sight! And when the emergency services come along, ie things we're interested in, everything else has to get out of the way.

I love analogies, they keep my brain sharp :)
