Sometimes Super Bowls are known more for the commercials than the game. Super Bowl LII will go down as a fantastic football game. The Philadelphia Eagles outlasted the New England Patriots 41-33 to become National Football League Champions in the 52nd Super Bowl.
This was the Eagles first Super Bowl win and their first championship since 1960 before the Super Bowl started. Even more remarkable they did it behind the super effort of backup quarterback Nick Foles. Foles looked every bit the match for the legendary Tom Brady of the Patriots. Both QB's looked great but to the winner goes the spoils.
Congratulations to all the Philadelphia fans. Enjoy the championship. Looks like you have a quarterback controversy coming up next season.:) That's a good problem to have.

No Im not bothered :)....You asked.
I dont know if there would ever be a moment when I get American football...stop start.... stop start which just seems tedious to me. There just seems no flow to the game and I dont like the short gains to start from another line.
Maybe somebody can help me have a eureka moment where I suddenly enjoy it but I doubt that will ever happen.
Im not much into Rugby either. I prefer English football which is the proper definition of a football game as dont carry the ball down the field

Lie any sport it helps to understand the rules and the strategies. Otherwise it just looks like some big blokes milling around. I mean don't get me wrong, it isn't as good a game as Association Football. But it is interesting in a different way.
Lol - as ever "interesting" is subjective! And you can't make yourself become interested in something that simply bores you rigid.
The only sports I'm interested in, even vaguely, are:
1) Football
2) Tennis/badminton
3) International rugby (but only when the home nations are playing)
4) Snooker
5) F1/rally racing
6) Motorbike racing
7) Boxing (only if there's an 'interesting' heavyweight fight on)
8) Clay-pigeon shooting.

Lol... My sole interest in F1 is from my love of fast cars, and how they're engineered and tuned (especially the fuels, coolants and lubricants, tyres and brakes used), and specifically how that technology trickles down for use in road cars, which at some point I may be interested in buying. I have zero interest in any 'strategies'!
I just watch the races to see who wins, and hope for some good action!
Therefore, I can assure you that even if I understood the rules of Super Bowl (and let's remember I'd have to be motivated to learn them in the first place, which is a hurdle I'm unlikely to overcome), it'd still bore me to tears, as I simply don't 'connect' with it - and that connection is vital if you're ever going to enjoy something.
It's a bit like saying one would enjoy the voice of Bob Dylan, if one understood his lyrics...
You either LIKE the sound of his voice or you don't - it's not something you can 'grow' to like, no matter how much you understand what he's singing about, if every time you hear his voice, it annoys you - and the same applies, in this instance, for me watching Super Bowl :)

Anything that involves hitting, kicking or throwing a ball does not interest me and never has. I used to like boxing and motorcycle racing, but don't watch now.
I'd enjoy good Judo contests and drag racing, but that's hardly mainstream entertainment.
To each their own, eh? Much of this is cultural, as I'm sure we all know. What you grow up with (often, not always) defines our preferences. The English love soccer and rugby, the Swiss and Austrians ski racing, Americans football and baseball. I'm generalizing, but you get the drift. Canadians happen to be mad for ice hockey, which I think is the fastest-moving team sport there is. Growing up on a diet of hockey on TV, live games, and most here being born with skates on, it's pretty tough for many of us to sit through any other sports match without sheer boredom and distraction. E.g. I can't get through a complete 90 minute soccer match and watch all that dilly-dallying outside the penalty area waiting for someone to "Attack the damn goal!!! you bunch of stumps!". It's painful! You see, in hockey, there's a shot at the net about every 30 seconds - constant action, and FAST. Watching all that futzing around in soccer drives me crazy. Not to mention the pansy fakery that goes on, feigning mortal injury from the lightest contact. At least hockey players have some grit -- gushing blood, they sit on the bench and get stitched up right then and there rinkside, and in two minutes they're back on the ice (this happens, not making it up...the only way a player would ever leave the game is if they had a broken bone or were knocked out cold).
As for American football, I love a good game, as I understand the strategy and the objectives of every play. It's fun to watch, but I agree, if one didn't know the nuances of the sport it would all seem a bit ludicrous. Likewise baseball - most games are a drag to watch, but some are really great. You have to know the strategies involved to enjoy it. Personally, I love watching baseball when I'm travelling on business and can sit and enjoy a game back in the hotel in the evening after a long day, pour a cold one and relax. Wonderful. A good baseball game is just the thing to unwind.
BTW, I thought the Superbowl game on Sunday was fantastic! One of the best I've ever seen. And it's brilliant that the underdog team won the day.
Anyway, my two-bits worth here.... Fun discussion.

Interesting that you should mention ice hockey, as that's something I think that I *could* get into, simply for the reasons you describe, in terms of it being fast-moving. That, for me, is the key to what makes watching sport on TV entertaining - and I want to be entertained!
That's primarily why I watch TV (to enjoy myself and have fun), not to 'tax' myself in any way (too much like hard work), and so fast-moving sports tend to be what hits the spot, or otherwise as you say, distraction and sheer boredom kicks in - especially when the bloody cricket is on!! Major YAWN! :rolleyes:
Am I right in thinking that there's a lot of 'stop/start' stuff happening in American football, disturbing the flow of the game, or am I mixing that up with something else? It's that kind of shit that annoys me.

You said above that you like Snooker and that is rarely a fast moving game. I've watched matches were the average shot time was over a minute.

Snooker is what it is... I grew up watching the greats, during the 80s, such as Hurricane Higgins and Jimmy White, and they made the game ENTERTAINING, often due to their rather exuberant personalities, especially Alex Higgins, who had immense natural talent and played with SPEED and skill (as did Jimmy), which is what hooked me to the sport.
There was a rich vain of talent in snooker during that era, not just from those two players, but from the likes of Dennis Taylor, Steve Davis, John Virgo, Terry Griffiths, Ray Reardon and many more, together with some truly epic matches! :eek:
So that's what hooked me to snooker, and also because I sometimes play the game myself, along with pool. These days, it's not quite the same, but there are still some entertaining players around who 'put bums on seats', such as Ronnie O'Sullivan, arguably the modern day Alex Higgins, and when he's on song, he's a joy to watch.
As you can see, I prefer the fast and skillful players in snooker, who 'speed up' an otherwise slow game, stopping it from becoming boring, which ties in with the point Svend and I were making earlier. I can't abide things that (to me) are dull and dreary. I hate snooker, for example, when it becomes too tactical and defensive.
I'm also the same when it comes to tennis, preferring PASSIONATE (often temperamental) players, who make the game ENTERTAINING to watch, no more so than (again back in the 80s) the great John McEnroe - now HE was simply immense!! :D
My other favourite players from then would've been Jimmy Connors, Boris Becker (the tennis he played to win Wimbledon in 1985 was about the best I've seen) and Andre Agassi. I also loved watching the truly epic battles between Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova... I like watching stuff that pins you to your seat!!
Coincidentally, that's also why I support Glasgow Celtic, because of the fast, attacking and ENTERTAINING football they play! Rarely are they boring to watch. I can't abide slow and boring defensive *anything* in sport.
I even hate football when it becomes too tactical and turns into a game of chess!! European and International football often gets like that now. YAWNSVILLE...

Yes, Yes, and Yes. You're talking my language here Marco. Every once in a blue moon I catch a soccer...oops, that's football to you all...game that's all about attacking. Now that's more like it! Otherwise I just can't sit through it all.

I think you would like ice hockey. It really is incredibly fast moving. The sheer speed, agility and split-second reaction time of these players is just remarkable. Hey, we've got the Olympics starting now, so a great opportunity to watch some good games. The teams to watch are Canada (Yay!), USA, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic and Russia. The Swiss have been putting up a good fight in recent years, and keep getting better. The Swedes play a fast gritty game and aren't afraid to lay on some hits, big Viking lads that they are. Russia and Czech play with a lot of finesse. Canada will, naturally, win gold :D
And do watch some women's games, esp. when Canada plays the US -- that's an arch rivalry and is never dull. These two have dominated women's hockey, to the detriment of the sport, but other nations are slowly catching up so there's finally some competition. Can't say with confidence that Canada will win gold here, as the US has been very strong of late. That said, we always seem to pull it off in the final moments of the gold medal game. The quality of play in women's hockey really is first rate. Tremendous skill and athleticism.
As for American football, you are quite right that there's a lot of stop-start going on. The Wall Street Journal did a study a few ago that of the average game, lasting officially 60 minutes on the clock, there are in fact only 11 minutes of action. The rest is just standing around in a huddle, listening to the referees shouting, and generally doing not much of anything. More time is spent in TV broadcasts doing replays and commercials. Pretty pathetic. That said, a good game can be exciting to watch. It helps to understand the strategy. But knowing your need for constant action, this probably ain't the sport for you. Try hockey...:)

So Marco...are you watching any Olympic hockey? Some great games on these days, men and women.
Canadian women played the US last night in a scrappy game, but SO FAST! 60 shots on net in total, both sides....that means a shot on net every minute of play, not counting those that missed the net. Constant action.
