Having paid for my Touch in October and heard nothing at all from them, I made my feeling known by complaining to their customer support and when asked to fill in a survey again, I told it as I saw it.
I imagine many of us have done the same, but guess what - I have just had an email from them - here it is -
Dear customer,
A while ago you have ordered the new Squeezebox Touch on our store. We are working hard on the release of this new product and we want to ensure we ship a high quality product. Although it is hard to give an exact date, we expect the product to be ready in the April-May time frame.
We will inform you once the product will be released and we ask you a bit of patience. As a small gift we have here a special 20% discount voucher for you for a one time order on any of our products on the store. Please stay tuned.
So, while this doesn't really change things, it does slightly change the way I feel about not being informed at all about progress and their customer service.
Now, what is there I want at 20% off..?

That would have meant more if they're just offered you 20% of the delayed Touch rather than something else....

Well I was interested but not any more. I'm currently listening to an Audiocom modded SB Classic through my Benchmark DAC and it sounds spanking! :eyebrows:
It's got Mark's Level 2 mods and upgraded clock and is definitely a step up from using my iMac via optical cable.
The added bonus for me is that it means that iTunes is just used as tool for managing and arranging files, tagging, artwork etc. I actually find the browser based Squeezebox Server much nicer to use, particularly the way artist, album titles etc are hyperlinks for navigating around my music.
Still need a decent PSU though....
Stratmangler

Well done on nabbing a bargain Steve.
I often navigate around the server program by browser (Firefox), and take it for granted - now you mention it, it is a good way to navigate around a music collection.
Welcome back to the fold.

I forgot to update here - I wasn't charged way back when, but have canceled my order and gone for a Sonos instead - it is available, works, and seems to do what it is meant to.
I was thinking of getting a NAS for all my data and music anyway, so will keep you informed when it all happens...!
From what stratmanglers link says the Touch may be released soon, but then again, we have been told that for months - lets wait and see.....
Me - I am busy ripping cd's and am now on the 'H's.

Glad to hear that you're getting through your CD's at a rip roaring speed (sorry, I just couldn't help myself then - you'll forgive me in time).;)
I'm in no rush to get my hands on a touch, as my SB3 is doing sterling work. I'm not surprised that you went for the Sonos stuff - as you've said, it's here and it works. The Touch is just a rumour to all except the beta testers ATM.:(

Any more news / feedback from logitech on this?
steveinspain
22-03-2010, 06:29
The only news I have had is that my order has been cancelled officially !
The ripping is roaring on, and I am at the 'M's now...
The more I read about the Sonos the happier I am - seems there are various mods that can be done - not that I have a clue how to but people do offer various upgrades, so I may try to find out if a home demo is possible when I am looking at a second ZP90.
However, my wallet needs some time to recover first !
Just took a look at the Logitech Touch forum and while the rumours there are always amusing it seems that it may be out in April/May, it may be being scrapped for a version 2 and it is going to be used as part of a missile guidance system.
Looks like I am missing out on something now !

:lol::lol::lol:
Anyway, a "Version2" is purely a marketing move, in a desperate attempt to justify the enormous delay. That my vision of things. ;)

People are just making up stories to fill a void caused by lack of information. They are simply getting the bugs out of the software before release-this is what the developers and beta testers are saying and I believe them.
If details of the Touch hadn't been released early (by mistake) all this speculation wouldn't have happened.
Its a less than ideal situation for sure. I've currently got Chrism's SB3 as I'm splitting the display and audio/digital rails to make the most of the PSU I've made for him. Whilst it here, i've been using my iphone to control it! TBH although not the point of the thread, i'm not sure what i'd get from a touch that i'm not getting from the iphone/ipod touch software (ipeng)?

I'd thought long and hard about this too and I can't see how the 'touch' feature is anything but pointless in most 'proper' setups. I'm mean I'm over *here* and the touch screen is over *there*, so how does that help?
As you say, a touch screen remote would be a different matter but the unit itself?
Obvious plus point for many of course is the ability to work stand-alone without a computer and for a few, the ability to deal with hi-res files.
As my iMac is essentially silent and always on anyway AND in the same room on movie duties, the former doesn't bother me and I just don't have enough high-res stuff to influence me that much.

23-03-2010, 06:56
For me the main reason for wanting one was the USB connection - no need for the pc or a NAS.
If your mac or pc is always on, then no need at all !
Ali Tait
23-03-2010, 08:54
It takes SD cards too.
I'll be getting one purely just as a digital transport via SPDIF....one far better than the current SB3 (say the beta testers) and approaching the Transporter.
Colour screen will be cool too, not so bothered about the touchscreen.

The list of bugs that need fixing on Bugzilla is down to seven. Only a few weeks ago it was 30+. Not a totally reliable guide I know as some bugs may be more difficult than others to eradicate but my guess is that it wont be long before an announcement from Logitech.
Can you imagine the pressure on those bug squashers?

Well I've mucking about with mine for a couple of hours now. This is the first SB product I've had or indeed any kind of streaming device.I'm highly impressed! So easy to set up and use,and the touch screen is the bee's bollocks.I've also downloaded an app for my phone that seems to work well (I use an Android phone) and the biggest worry, whether it would work with the Drobo connected straight in,is laid to rest,as it's fine.
So how does it sound? Well, not run in yet obviously, but first impressions are extremely favourable.I have compared the analogue out to the digital out through my Audio Note DAC Zero, and yes, there is an easily discernable difference between them to my ears. The analogue out is very good, but the digi out through the dac is clearly superior, and indeed is far better than my Arcam through the DAC,so that says a lot for the Touch I think, given the price. It's said on the slim forums that the Touch with a good dac will equal the Transporter, and from what I'm hearing,I wouldn't dispute that.I'll post some more impressions when it's had a chance to run in.

Sounds good.
I haven't had chance to play with mine, apart from uploading the new firmware.
I'll have a go when I've finished some work.
I have to admit to being disappointed with the display of the Touch.
It's harder to read than the SB3 from my listening position and due to the appalling rake of the screen, the display is virtually useless, losing all manner of colour and contrast even at eye level :steam: .
What the hell were the designers thinking? When you stand over the display it's simply glorious, but sit down and it's crap. I've resorted to propping up the back of the stand to increase the angle of the screen, but it's still not right.
The solution it seems is to place the Touch some way below eye level, something that's not possible in my setup.
Ali Tait
12-04-2010, 21:18
If you have a smartphone, use that.
Good idea, and probably the best compromise.
Ali Tait
13-04-2010, 07:17
Yes,I have the same problem,it's a bit far away and the angle is too acute to read it easily from the listening position.
Can any one tell me what the advantage of using the Touch is?
I'm using an Apple Airport express into a Duncan Dac to play streaming itunes, controlled on an ipod touch currently.
Its OK, but not as good as Cd also through a Duncan Dac.
Will this gizmo be better?
Ali Tait
13-04-2010, 09:42
Well the advantage for me is that I can plug my Drobo straight into the Touch without the need to have a computer running, which is what I was after.I didn't want to be distracted by a laptop or similar running when I wanted to listen to music. You can also plug in a USB stick or SD card.As for sound quality,it's better than my Arcam through my Audionote dac.

Is it early days yet to hear from anyone who has any other Squeezebox, and who has bought an SB Touch? It'd be good to hear if there is really any significant difference.
Ok, Touch installed and playing. I'll need some time to do a proper comparison, but its dac is *very* promising. Out of the box is excellent sounding and not frustrating at all plugged to the Crofts and the SFs. :)

Well...after some tinkering the Touch appears to be playing better. I think Logitech still have some issues to sort out with regards to the on-board server.
I've been running the Touch by accessing the the files from my pc. No problems here. I downloaded a couple of 24/96 tracks from HDTracks today...very impressive.
If I try to stream these tracks wirelessly from my pc the sound pops and crackles for a couple of seconds and then plays OK. I might try connecting an ethernet cable to see if this disappears.
How is everyone else getting on?

Good to hear that you're getting on better than you were.
I'm sure Logitech will sort out the issues with the SBS-lite that the Touch runs.
It's a problem that existing Squeezebox users probably wouldn't encounter, as they'd simply incorporate the Touch into an existing setup, as I will do when I get around to getting a Touch myself.

Not yet, but I think I'm going to have to.
Second listening experience, a bit more detailed this time, but still not a proper "review":
The analogue part (SBT's dac):
It's a nice dac indeed. Still a bit different from my reference dacs.
It's not as smooth as the Norhstar in upsample mode, and not as "raw" as the Caiman, especially in mid-lows. In other words, it won't replace my dacs. Unless a later listen proves the contrary, it is somewhere between my two main dacs. The noise level is pretty low, a very good point at this price.
Detailed, but not as much as the Caiman, relaxed, but not as much as the Northstar192. Still, a very good and neutral dac.
Much better than the SB3 dac, in any case.
The digital part (as a digital drive):
Very impressive. The coax output is clearly quieter than the SB3, even with the SBT stock power supply. Clearly a winner, there's no going back for me. The 24/96 playback ability makes it future-proof, as I don't plan having any 24/192 anytime soon.
Full review next week, as I'm too busy this week.
Not yet, but I think I'm going to have to.

Dunno didn't see it.Hope all this is worth it!
It'll be worth it.
It is ironic though that most stuff you can get on CD is not available for 16/44.1 download (usually MP bloody 3), and it's often cheaper to buy CD's for 1 play to rip it from Amazon than it is to download said inferior MP3 files.:mental:

You might find some interesting stuff on here
This was set up by Michael Osborn of astintrew,
"I have just launched a new web site called DreamStreaming because I am fed up with the lack of CD quality music available through the internet; and good clear information about what is available and where. I think you may have the same frustrations! We live in an era where streaming and server audio hardware quality outstrips music content availability through the internet. I think it is time to try and address this problem. Welcome to http://www.dreamstreaming.info
DreamStreaming is the first site to present all the best, highest quality (legal) music content available though the internet, particularly CD quality and studio quality. It is free to join and free to add new sites from around the world. DreamStreaming will soon also be offering its members free CD quality music tracks, alongside news and comment on everything related to digital music through the internet - and the definitive listing of all quality music sites out there.
DreamStreaming has been launched partly to lobby the music industry. We want the industry to become aware that there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of discerning music lovers - their best customers - who want to buy music through the internet at CD quality, not lossy MP3. The more members DreamStreaming has, the louder we can shout and the more the music distribution industry will take us seriously.
If you know of (legal) music download or streaming sites not already on DreamStreaming, please let me know or add them on the site.
Very best regards,
Michael Osborn
CEO DreamStreaming."

Got the two albums downloaded finally. No wonder they took so long, they are both nearly 1.5 GB! Did you find yours obviously better then normal rez? I won't get a chance to listen to mine till tonight.

Yes. However I have some 16/44 recordings that are very good too.
Its hard to say really without doing an A/B comparison of the same track...I am impressed

Here is some free downloads for anyone wanting to do some A/B comparisons on the cheap. The same tracks can be downloaded at 24/96 & 16/44.1. Nice recordings of Flute, Bassoon, Harpsichord playing Bach sonatas. might not be your cup of tea, but the difference I can hear even through my toy ADMs show what potential 24/96 has. Just a shame I have to change the resolution by hand on the 0404s software.
