Just as we thought we had reached a satisfactory state with the hi-fi, Sue and I have to leave this rather gorgeous house due to the owners wanting it back for a member of their family. We have arranged to rent a rather nice cottage out in rural Lincolnshire but it is requiring a rethink of the hi-fi. As part of that rethink I have sold the Denon DL103 and the Dynavector P75 and replaced them with my trusty old Ortofon OM40 and the phono stage built into the preamp.
Listening yesterday to 'Friendly Bacteria' by Mr Scruff the Ortofon was an immediate smack in the face over the Denon. The tightness and solidity of the bass was bloody stunning leaving the Denon fat and bloated in comparison. The level of detail in the midband again is bloody stunning compared to the Denon which is clearly hiding so much. OK the sound is now thinner and more toppy but the extra level of grip and control is amazing. The extra level of detail is absolutely breath taking. It is such a shame that I think we are going to need smaller loudspeakers to replace the B&W's.
