Wanted: Cheap Receiver

Hi all,

Haven't been around for a while as life has been very busy!

Anyway wondering if anyone has a cheap receviver such as the link below going cheap?

I always put bids in nine seconds before the sale ends. Avoids showing interest in advance and keeps other potential bids low, hopefully. Nine seconds is too short a time for a counterbid to go in from somebody else unless they use an automatic 'sniper'. I decide before bidding, the max I want to pay and often win items for less.

That's exactly what I do walpurgis, exactly, even to the 9 seconds! The main thing, as you say, is to decide beforehand what your absolute maximum bid is and don't go a penny higher if the bidding exceeds that in the run in. Another one will come up eventually, always. I waited many months for a pair of Denon by Mission SC-M5K bookshelf speakers in decent condition at a reasonable price. A few days ago a pair appeared on a 'buy it now' for £35. I offered £25 and to my surprise, got em. The seller was great, he did a wonderful job of packing them and now I have them, in perfect condition. So, like I say, my advice is WAIT if necessary, another will always come up.

Not necessarily. I kept a two year watch for a sanely priced Pass Labs Aleph 3 power amp. Not one turned up. Too short of cash for one now :rolleyes:.

Well got outbid on the Yam, listed as faulty so didnt want to go any higher, have checked AVForums, seems a bit quiet for older style stuff. Not that I can post anyway as I have insufficient permission apparently. So I shall keep looking on here and on ebay.

Yes I should of put one up... but a before and after will be better.... Once I have the old system out and the new in I shall do a Vid and photos (because you have to!!!!!).

At one point about 2 years ago I was stuck for a decent amp (Radford was being looked at) so a friend donated a Sony TA-VA8ES av amp. Used it in 'direct' stereo mode and was shocked how good it was.

I've hung onto it for a possible project I still have in mind of driving 3-way speakers in active mode with a software crossover network.

The Onkyo looks the biz - hope it works out well for you.

If you get the right Sony's they are pretty good, but the run of the mill stuff isn't great.

Seriously, maybe a pair of Rega floorstanders? They are slim, sound good and don't need huge power to drive. Not too expensive either.

However, I have just found a pair of Pioneer CS33A's in the back of the workshop at work

No one seems to know whos they are so I might just nip them home lol.


I think they would be ideal for the rears if anything!

All plugged in last night and seems spot on.

I had all my devices going through HDMI, but decided I'd leave the Sky box through the TV and run red and white to the aux on the Receiver otherwise it'd be aon all of the time when watching sky.

Only problem with this is, there is a significant delay - Sound comes through the Onkyo and then lips move on the TV lol. I have read online its a common proble, I'm going to order some Optical Cables from ebay as apparently putting Sky through optical is a better solution. Will see if that improves things. But overall, very very happy indeed. Will keep eyes open for some new speakers. The Sonys are actually pretty good though. I was quite impressed with how they sound.

If I recall there is a setting in the Skybox to reduce lipsync problems (trial and error) . But yes optical out from the skybox will sound better. But there may still be some lipsync issue which you will need to correct in the relevant skybox setting. I found just going optical out from my TV works much better (no lipsync issues) as well as capturing all the TV audio output (sky, netflix, plex etc) but of course the TV needs to support that.

I havent played with Amp settings yet. only settings I could ifnd on Sky to do with sound only gave me delay options for Optical/HDMI, never thought of using Coax I could try that.

what amp is it, it will most likely have an option to turn on/off lipsync.

optical is a different fitting to coax,so no... or did you mean using one of the red and white rca's into the coax inputs.

If you are referring to the digital coaxial phono socket. An analogue cable as I think you are describing will work, but better results are likely from a dedicated digital RCA/phono cable.

As mentioned. Optical is a different type of digital socket. Your unit may have both.

Optical totally different type of cable, not just a different connector. Light not leccy. You can get a brand new optical cable for a tenner though.

he's having lip sync problems with the av, i had the same problem with the 606 using the hdmi for audio aswell as picture. tried it with coax for digital audio an left the hdmi for visual so id still get 1080i, worked for me.

I use optical out from the telly, HDMI feed into it. That works with no issues but I don't think SQ is as good as a separate feed straight from cable box to amp. Can't do that with my current box as it has none standard connectors for the co-ax output and no analogue outputs. No idea why they did that but it is a pain in the ass. SQ is more than adequate as is though.

Mike, thanks very much!!

I am awaiting the arrival of a 'Neat' bluetooth to optical device for the receiver, once this arrives I'll be setting tha up so will have a switch over to coax on the Sky and see how I get on!! I have already re-assigned one of the HDMI's so I'll switch that to Coax.

I think for the time being, I'll leave the sky direct into the TV for HDMI, this way the amp doesnt have to be on for the missus to watch it.

if you connect the hdmi from sky box to amp input 'cbl/sat' and the coax from sky box to coax input 1 on the amp then in amp settings go to digital assign then choose digital audio assign scroll down and select hdmi 3 or cbl/sat and then scroll left/right and select coax input 1. this is just from memory so might be a little different. this way when you select cbl/sat on the remote it will switch to sky. but you need another hdmi cable going from the amp hdmi out to hdmi in on your t.v. and have your t.v set to that hdmi input. if you want hd audio from blu ray just connect a hdmi cable from blu ray player to one of the hdmi inputs on your amp i.e 'dvd' and then select dvd on your remote and 'hey presto' the tv will change to that input.

This is how I Have it at the mo,

I have HDMI1 as Xbox One, HDMI2 as Xbox 360, and HDMI3 as Media Center PC, HDMI4 is spare then I have HDMI Out going to HDMI1 on my TV so I just switch to that when I want Xbox etc, sky is on HDMI2 on the TV, I'll assign CBL/SAT to Coax and have sound for sky through that - wont use sky through the receiver very often, odd film or documentary.

glad its sorted. ive had a few onkyo av's (currently using the 606) and i like them, some have their faults 607 and 609 no sound issue and 606 failed hdmi board. i have the audessy set up mic if you want to borrow it let me know.

I got a mic with mine thanks mate, yeah it seems a good bit of kit though she does get red hot... I am thinking of taking the lid off and maybe putting a couple of computing fans in to expel the heat. Anyone else done this?

nah just put a cuppla slices of bread on it an make some toast:stalks:
