View Full Version : Thinking of selling a Stereo 20

Now that I'm a deaf old git (the deafness is increasing, the old git bit seems to have been with me for ages) I think I should sell off a few more bits of hi-fi as I can't hear the damn things.

The first to go will be the Leak Stereo 20. Still fully functioning and sounding great - so Ronnie tells me - but value seems a bit of a problem. I have looked on eBay and the prices seem staggering, especially in Italy for some reason.

Mine is not A1 cosmetically. Someone had sprayed it black before I got it so I'm not sure how that will affect the value. I can't believe that £1300 + £70 postage (Italian) is realistic even for a perfect one but I suppose they are worth what someone will pay.

Any opinions on this? Stuck here in France does cause a problem or two with carriage which certainly won't be cheap. I don't want to give it away but also don't want to overdo it.

Ta!

Hello Al,

We have to sell here first. The market is not the same as in the UK. Our neighbours have had theirs on the market for two years and only one enquiry!

The Leak had a rebuild about ten years ago and Alan had a look or two and I think it passed inspection. The speaker sockets could do with being replaced which I think I will do before selling it. The paintwork isn't great but then anyone who knows what they are doing would find it easy enough to strip it and do that I'm sure. Anyone else can put it in a cupboard!!

I just connected it up and risked annoying the neighbours and it still sounds wunnerful. I use the Quads these days (303 or 306) and sadly, I can still hear the difference but at such stupid volumes that it just isn't worth it. It definitely drives the ESLs better than the trannies though. They are another decision coming up:hmm:

The respray will put folks off, since most buyers often have a chance to get almost minty original looking ones which have been serviced.

Obviously, what you get on the continent is more than you would get here in the UK. Guess there are more of them here.

Unless things have changed radically in the last year or so these are usually between £400-£500 for a decent, working example.

Thanks all,

I just have to steel myself to sell it now. No point in hanging on to it to look at!

Hi Gordon!

Good old amp the stereo 20. I drove my Tannoys with one for years. Sounded great and was definitely powerful enough, gripped them well.

I've had three of these and never had any bother with them after a simple initial fettle to make sure all was good when I bought them.

I sold mine here, clean, serviced example with a nice NOS rectifier as well as the new production original, and some nice cryo power valves £600 which I thought was fair enough.

Even a freshly renovated one from Classique Sounds goes for less than a grand so if someone is flogging them for £1300 in Italy then they are clearly the next Richard Branson. (Or Silvio Berlusconi maybe).

I had a Leak Stereo 20 as my first valve amp in gunmetal colour. It had been 'sorted' by G.Croft and sounded marvellous. Really annoyed I sold it. I recon they go for £600-£800 depending on condition.

As Lee has already commented, A home ? re-spray unless done to closely match an origional factory black example and has had matching decals applied then sale price is going to be rather compromised I'm sorry to say.
