Boring furniture question

Hullo,

I have an awkwardly sized alcove to the right of my fire place. I want to buy some type of cabinet to put my amp and CDP in.

I am not looking for a bespoke hifi stand, rather a cabinet (i.e. just a general piece of furniture) where I can close the doors. I'll drill a few holes in the back to run cables out of it.

The alcove is 58.5 cm wide. Am looking for something as close to that width as poss. Not wanting to spend a fortune, it's just a temporary measure. Minimum internal dimensions are 45cm wide and 47cm deep so I can get the kit in it.

To add icing to the cake, it'd be contemporary looking, and in a white, blue or grey. Something like these from Ikea would tick all the boxes - it just doesn't come in the right sizes for my needs.

Hi Steve,
50cm wide kitchen base unit
1.5m length of 40mm wood worktop, 60cm of which would make the top.
Cut the remaining 90cm length into 150mm plinth, and two strips at 225mm wide x40mm to use for the 40mm infills at either side of the unit, or to suit the alcove depth.?

I have adapted loads of Ikea stuff, much easier than trying to find the right size, buy something close and cut it down, or ad on etc, all depending of your woodworking skill though. Their bargain basement area very handy, especially for large bits to cut down for tops, or sides, or for extra shelving . Some stores have free timber areas too.

Yes, Ikea components can be reconfigured to meet your needs.

Yes indeed and makes Ikea hacking made harder these days. Still possible with some perseverance and a dollop of luck.

You can easily tell from the weight what is hollow and what is not. Also, some of the hacks take advantage of the hollow design.

That’s true, I bought a cheap Ikea media unit and it’s literally made of hollow cardboard — the whole thing makes an echoey sound if you give it a knock.

But I really appreciated its weight as I was carrying it up the stairs :D
