Guys, see in future, could you please not use Blank Canvas for posting messages about full inboxes? That's not what that area is for, but rather strictly hi-fi discussion.
If you want to post such messages, then use Abstract Chat. Cheers!

Oliver, I take it you made these up yourself(?). If you don't mind a quick question: being a twisted pair, how did you deal with the shield? Did you solder to ground at both ends? Or only one end? If so, which end -- source or target? Reason for the question is that I've made up a few ICs using a Belden cable with similar characteristics (8402), and have grounded the shield only at one end, the source end, and left the other unterminated. Curious to know how yours are built?
Thanks,
Svend

Sandro requested they be wired as shown in the picture [emoji4]

Thanks Oliver.
So, just to make sure I have it right (I don't use XLRs), the shield is effectively grounded on both ends. Equivalent to grounding it at both ends if using only RCAs. Correct?
Edit: to clarify, the black wire in the drawing is the shield, and Pin 1 is drain...right? Sorry if I'm being a bit thick here. I don't work with XLRs.

Ha, dont worry.
If its an RCA - RCA i attach the shield at one end only. Red to hot, Blue to return and shield to return at one end then red to hot , blue to return at the other.

I found for general RCA/RCA I didn't use the drain, this sounded best on my system.
The deck to head amp I used the drain/return at deck end otherwise I heard a slight hum. Probably sensitive due to LOMC.

I found unshielded was noisy when using a HA or SUT so always use the shield too. for digital i dont bother with the shield.
Thanks guys - very helpful. As mentioned, I roll my own cables. There's so much contradictory info out there on how to build DIY cables and types to use -- coax, twisted pair, star quad. Good to have some insight from those who've done a few.
Oilver -- yours is the same technique I use for RCA-RCA. Shield connected to ground only at one end. I read somewhere that this end should be connected at the source with the unterminated shield end at target, but I'm not so sure how that holds up along the chain, say from preamp to power amp.
BTW, if you can find it, you might try Belden 8402 or 8412 some time. I've had great luck with it. Seems highly regarded among the DIY crowd. Very transparent and smooth sounding. They have the same layup as your Klotz MC5000.
I've got some Mogami 2524 coax that I want to try soon. It's supposed to be very nice sounding as well.

I'll have a look into those. Always willing to try new cables.
Here's a link with some info on the 8402 ICs:
http://jeffsplace.me/wordpress/?p=7325
A web search should turn up plenty of other reviews. If you can't find 8402, try 8412 -- from the spec sheets it looks to be virtually the same and is probably easier to find....I've used both and they work equally well to my ears.
I'll let you know how the Mogami works out...might make some up tonight, now that I'm in the mood :)

Work pretty well if you equipment is grounded . chassis ground as same equipotential so the screen is redundant
And can generate a noise gogle up see ground loop.
Belden is good but Klotz is just ...
One can ear the difference immediately
Sandro -- so you've tried Belden 8402 then? Interesting that you find Klotz sounds better, as I find the Belden pretty darn good. Hard to imagine anything more transparent. Makes me want to try some Klotz cable now. It seems I can only get the MC5000 here as part of a pre-made mic cable, not as bulk. Might have to suck it up and pay the extra if I want some.

Go for it Sandro :)
Well guys, I tried the Mogami 2524 ICs this morning, and have mixed impressions. Granted they're not burned in yet, and I will leave them in for a month or so and do the comparo again to be fair.
I used them on my CDP, a hot-rodded Teac VRDS-10, played a few tracks through the Belden 8412s and then same through the Mogamis.
Pros: more detail, better imaging (amazing really, pinpoint stuff), more air, very quick sounding. The detail and imaging really are remarkable, great presence of instruments and voice in the room.
Cons: lighter overall presentation than the Beldens, tending toward bright and analytical (maybe needs burn-in?); noticeably less full bass and midrange. Soundstage seems smaller, but this may be a mind trick because of the lighter mids and bass. If all of this doesn't improve with burn-in then they won't be a good match for my system, as since the mods to my preamp it's much more open and detailed in the highs, and these ICs are pushing that over the edge of pleasant.
As a general observation, I've noticed the same character with other coax cables on the Teac -- much brighter and thinner than the Belden 8412, which is a twisted pair w. shield similar to the MC5000.
Now if I could find a cable that combines the best of both...Wow! That'd be a killer.
Best,
Svend

Oliver, if you're interested in some Belden 8402 or 8412 ICs, we could do a swap. I'll make you a pair if you make me a pair with Klotz. Same plugs, just to keep it even-Stephen. Shoot me a PM if that tweaks your fancy. Happy to do this.
PS - I can get 8402 cryo treated here locally for a good price. I've no idea if the cryo thing makes a difference or not, but it's an option.

Lol,
Truth is, it's a great cable and superb SPPV.
There is a cable I prefer to be fair, it is more expensive and I use it in "My" range (Range? One cable 🤣🤣)
The cable Brian used to make his interconnects is also very very good but is around £10pm. I prefer that cable to the Klotz, just a bit more sparkle and air to it.

I've no idea if the cryo thing makes a difference or not, but it's an option. The Belden cable has too high of a capacitance for my liking. I have found I prefer as low a capacitance as possible due to having passive components. It might all be nonsense but in my house I prefer it.
Also, I don't have any spare Klotz. I do have a pair of cables make up with some VERY nice RCAs which will be for sale due to the purchaser dropping out. (Full refund given because I'm not a monster [emoji23])
Happy to ship to your part of the world.
Hi Oliver,
All good re. Belden. No worries.:)
Interesting comment re. capacitance. I wonder if using lower capacitance cables would tame a wee bit of sibilance I'm getting? Any thoughts?
As for your cables, I might be interested... Drop me a PM and we can chat off line here.
Cheers,
Svend
