I want to make up a couple of interconnects possibly 2 pairs at 1m each. Any recommendations or sources, had a look on the interne5 auction site but didn’t really see anything. Nothing at ridiculous prices

Ridiculously high (expensive), or ridiculously low (cheap)?
1. RG316/u Use 2 lengths per side, just use the core rather than the screen.
2. Klotz MC5000
3. Klotz AC110

Why? True you will halve the capacitance per unit length, but the screen is silver plated copper, whereas the core is plated steel.
To the other cables you have suggested that are available 'off the drum', I would add (amongst others)
RG 58C/U, or RG 58C/U-01
RG 59C/U (particularly for digital interconnects)
RG 174
RG 223
URM70 (also for digital)
Gotham GAC-1
Gotham GAC-2 (for balanced interconnects)
Van Damme XKE
and
Sommer 'Carbcable'

Well not ridiculously high just a source or recommendation for general good cable at say £5. - £15 or miore if it’s something really spe@cial. But I am not a believer that expensive means good. I just make an opinion once it’s in place, but not been doing diy for a while and looking for good suppliers or products

And thank you Barry Gotham is one I was trying to remember!
All of the cables suggested above shouldn't cost more than £2/metre.

So I would be interested in some klutz mc5000 . Is it available in less than 100 m rolls?

Yes it's available off the roll. From Studiospares.

Ive tried various configs of RG316/u and it sounded best that way. I intend to try doubling up the amounts again when I get some more. The RG316/u I bought used silver plated, copper clad steel as conductor.

At audio frequencies the 'skin effect' doesn't have much of an effect, especially with a conductor diameter as small as that of RG316, so the current density is virtually constant across the diameter of the centre conductor. That is, virtually all of the current flows through the steel core and very, very little of it flows in the silver plate and copper cladding.

Presumably because this is how one of the UK's bedroom manufacturers chooses to use it. However, as you say, the shield is actually a better conductor at audio frequencies.
If the OP buys some, he can try it a few ways and stick with the config he likes best. I used my ears and I'm happy with the results. YMMV.

Indeed, which makes me think, is skin effect an issue when it comes to RF riding on cables?

Hi Oliver,
£7.00 total delivered 2 meters.
Let me know if your ok with that, coming from Switzerland.

I've used the RG316/u in a number of experimental cables and ultimately I just don't think it's very good as an audio cable.

However I've used it I thought it was a bit 'grainy', a bit 'two dimensional' and not particularly detailed.

I’ve used just the core and the core and shield.

I’ve used just the core and the core and shield.Mad isn't it, this HiFi lark. Some people love it some don't.
I've used the RG316/u in a number of experimental cables and ultimately I just don't think it's very good as an audio cable.
I don't like RG316 as the FEP outer insulation along with the solid inner steel core makes the cable too 'springy' to dress properly. I've tried some and didn't find it was any better or worse than most other coaxial cables I've tried.
Indeed, which makes me think, is skin effect an issue when it comes to RF riding on cables?
Yes, though to compare a cable's susceptability to RFI, one need's to know what the surface transfer impedance (ZT) is for the cable. Rarely quoted by manufacturers as it is difficult to measure, but the IEC recommendation is for it to be no more than 100mOhm/m at 30MHz.
Sometimes cable manufacturers (such as the Swiss cable company Huber & Suhner) will quote a rejection level to external RF in dB for cables having a 50Ohm characteristic impedance and terminated by the same impedance:
20.log(ZT/100) for 1metre length,
though this is somewhat academic since audio cables are terminated with widely differing and different impedances, and it is not at all clear what these impedances are at radio frequencies (> 1MHz).
Interesting Barry. [emoji4]
