Must be expensive...right?

Nope.
Under 10 Dollars.
https://downloads.monoprice.com/files/images/Ultra_Slim_Active_HDMI_05.png

Spending more time nowadays on American high end forums and its always interesting to see what trends those guys go with regarding equipment and cables.
Recently upgraded my Moviewatching to 4K, so changes in player, TV, disks and cabling: and as always trying to get best bang for buck.

In American AV forums, this cable company kept coming up...
Monoprice.

A bit of a Cash n Carry for electronics products in that they do most stuff, but their HDMI cables kept coming up in high end forum discussion.
Nowadays cant be faffed with sidegrading and the whole hifi kit "ratrace" so trying to put into effect Kit that I'd be happy livng with and not wanting to change.
Spend so much over the years with that, no more.
Point of all that was I was willing to spend money on cables to GET IT RIGHT...so I could forget about it and move on.

But still..these Monoproce cables kept coming up in discussion.
Only needed 2 cables in my setup, and short length was ok, so willing to push the boat out pricewise.
Had Mark grant HDMIs with my 1080P setup and was more than happy, so that was my baseline.

Took a 30 day trial on a Wireworld Platinum HDMI as I'd read great things about it.
Also read the Monoprice cable was a "Giant Killer"...but how many times have we all read THAT?

Direct comparison..the ten buck cable was better.
4K 60FPS 4:4:4 HDR 10 rock solid on all sources.
Immediately ordered 2 and called it done.

Google "Redmere Technology"..in fact I'll save you the bother. :)
https://hometheaterhifi.com/q-a/what-is-redmere-technology/

Monoprice bought these guys over and incorporated a revised version of it in their 18Gbps HDMI cables, and shitting crikey it makes all the difference.
AV cabling...Done.

Oh,
this was the cable sorry!

The performance is down to the Redmere technology and Monoprice are only one of several manufacturers using it.

I am sure the Monoprice cables are as good as the Amazon ones but the shipping and import charges make them poor value for money.

I can recommend the Amazon cables which are well made and perform well.

Can only speak to the Monoprice ones, as those were the ones reccommended on American AV forums and the only one I've tried.

Probably, but my Amazon HDMI cable is a 4.5m Redmere rated at 18gb. Cost £7.99 delivery included. Works really well with my 32" AOC 4k PC monitor at 60Hz refresh.

True the Monoprice costs only $8 but shipping is 5 times the purchase price.

I think I will sit on the sidelines for this one. It seems to me that the Redmere technology is great for long cables but if you have three foot hdmi cables between AV amp and telly like me, then its not going to make a huge difference.
I will wait for a few more comments on here when you have fitted them.

You're welcome. They do an even cheaper High Speed HDMI Cable using ultra thin cabling which may be a solution for those with wall mounted tvs with little cable clearance. Not sure that it has the Redmere chip but the specs would suggest so.

Marco.

I believe so. At least the first one. I think they are worth considering even for short runs as the cables are really thin and flexible. In fact on my Amazon 4.5m Redmere I cannot really believe that they can fit 19 strands into the cable. Redmere has been around for yonks and I think its merits are proven. The thing to look out for is the bigger plug at the monitor end to accommodate the Redmere chip, and the specs, 18gbps through HDMI2.0.

Despite saying I would wait, the £10 Redmere cable from Cabledepot was too much of a temptation and I bought one.
I normally use the tuner inside my TV but if I need to record I switch to the Talktalk set top box. The picture was decidedly inferior when the set top box was used but the Redmere cable makes a considerable difference on HD.
A surprising and good result. Well done to Gaz and Geoff.

Hi Geoff, have you had it running with 4K HDR?

I am using mine with a 32" 4k AOC pc monitor and the performance is excellent. I do a lot of writing and spreadsheet work. On this monitor I can have 3 a4 pages side by side even larger than the original a4 pages, or an a4 page side by side with a large spreadsheet. Even though the fonts are tiny, they are so clear. The new cable has added clarity to the mix.

I haven't yet switched to a 4k tv, but my friend bought one of these cables for his 55" 4k tv. Big overall improvement with better colour saturation.

Mine arrived a few days ago. Shouldn’t be any import duty because the unit price is very low.

Out with the Silver Starlight 5 and the Monoprice replaces it. Definitely on a par with the Wireworld. I think contrast is better with the Monoprice and blacks are well blacker.

A sure bargain in the AV world.

I disagree. I am also surprised that this forum has just discovered Redmere as it has been around for more than a decade. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk3tjPbUojw

Redmere are to be credited with bringing the price down and making the tech more accessible. I bought one of the long Monoprice cables (5m) back in 2011/12 for a home theatre (projector) setup in Malawi. It was good but the UK one I bought recently is as good.

Fair enough. You tell it as you see it. I see it differently, with the version available from Cable Depot causing images to look a little 'fuzzier' than the Monoprice, and with colours less 'solid' and well-defined [full review tomorrow on a separate thread].

Aside from that, I prefer the plugs used on the Monoprice and the fact that the cable used (or outer sheathing) is much thinner, thus making the overall HDMI lead even easier to hide.

I've only recently got into home-cinema, and bought a 4K flat-screen TV, and so would've had no reason until now to experiment with HDMI cables, hence why I'd not discovered the Redmere thing sooner.

I would send that cable back. You shouldn't have those problems even with a basic HDMI cable. I guess one of the downsides of the Redmere cables is that they are prone to damage precisely because the cables are so thin.

Geoff

Marco
12-02-2018, 11:07
Lol - it's not damaged in any way!

It works perfectly well (as does the other lead I bought from the Cable Depot), and is extremely effective. It's just not as effective, to my eyes, as the Monoprice one, which as outlined, simply does things a bit better. Had I not compared it with the Monoprice version, I'd have been delighted.

Bear in mind that I'm as fussy about optimizing the picture quality on my TV, as I am the sound I hear through my speakers (and that my eyesight is as good as my hearing acuity)!;)

Cool.
As you said Geoff, price can (happily) have not a lot to do with quality, thats whats worth putting out there so we all can benefit!
Sometimes these things come up that are worth reminding folk about.

Redmere was an Irish company, who came up with the technology and licenced it to various companies, first being Radio Shack (Tandy) I think?

Like all cable manufactureres (and resellers)...all are not equal, despite selling technically the “same thing”.

Marco.

Inspired by this thread I've ordered 2 Monoprice cables, 1 for the AV and 1 for my Sky box. I'm assuming I only need 1 in the chain, going to the TV? Reason I ask is because I have an HDMI cable going from my Oppo's output into the surround sound processor, and then a cable from the processor to the TV. I'm aiming to replace the latter so that the Redmere chip is at the TV end.

Good that these are 4k supported too as it'll mean I already have cables in place for when I eventually upgrade to 4k.

They're *not* the same as the Monoprice ones though, Jo. I bought two, and did a comparison between those and some Monoprice ones, all used in the same application, and the latter are notably better.

This is currently the best place to get the Monoprice ones from: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014RONTRK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?tag=skim0x3274-20&smid=A4PPL3N7I3N7V&th=1

I can say with some confidence though that, IMO, the Monoprice cables are the superior items, but there's not a massive amount in it - both are excellent, as both use Redmere technology, which is key to the superb performance that they offer :)

My cable depot active has arrived, it will not display any image from my blue ray player, probably due to it being set to 4:4:4, put the supplied one back in and no problem, back to 4K HDR...the labelling on the cable depot one has 'Ethernet', whereas the supplied panasonic one states '2.0'.

It may be faulty, I'll test it with a lower resolution source...

There was little info except high speed, active, and 18gb...anyway fingers crossed for the monoprice, both Marco and Gaz got 4.4.4 from theirs...

FYI my UB900 blue ray can be set to either 4k 4.4.4 10 bit, or 4k 4.2.0 8 bit, if it can't support 10 bit, and the supplied one can then it's off to the lap top bag with it ;)

As discussed on another thread you're not using yours with a 4K HDR TV, but with a lower res monitor...for 4k it needs to be at least 2.0a/b HDMI AFAIK

Ethernet over HDMI is used on devices that support it. For example, if you have a suitably equipped bluray player and smart tv supporting Ethernet over HDMI, both can access an ethernet connection plugged into either one. This can save a lot of unnecessary cabling.e

Just to add, HDMI 2.0 is still pretty new (2013 I think) and not found al all devices. However, even HDMI 1.4 introduced nearly 10 years ago will support 4k (and higher resolutions) though admittedly only @30 fps at 4k.

Oh no, it looks like they've used the 'Global Shipping Programme' (common on ebay because it's cheap), to send your cables, and I've had some dreadful experiences with that, including items I've paid for being lost forever!

Stuff goes halfway around the world and back (hence the documented 'tour of Philleas Fogg'), and then simply get lost. I hope that doesn't happen with you... I now refuse to deal with sellers who ship with GSP, or pay extra for them to use a more reliable courier.

I went with the ebay option as I couldn't find the 6' ones Gaz posted in his original column elsewhere, except the monoprice US store, and they wanted $45 for shipping.

OK cables have eventually arrived and I've just tested them out...(look to be geniune)

Kit used;

Panasonic TX-55CX802 (TV), Sky Q Box, Panasonic BDUB900 (Ultra Blu-Ray)

Currently using the supplied HDMI cables, with the sky box set at 4k 10bit, and the blu-ray set at 4K(50/60p) 4:4:4...both working well

Now with the active monoprice in place;

Sky Q to TV; Occasionally it seems to grab half an image, then loses it, I left it for about 15mins, still the same situation

Blu-Ray to TV; Initially encouraging, shows the menu (unlike the cable depot one), however tried a couple of 4k discs, no image. I then set the blu-ray down to 4:2:0, and it works. One thing to note it did seem to pass the players 'test' when setting it to 4:4:4 (as in 'can you see this image y or n), however the disc doesn't even show a menu at that setting.

So a 'stepchange' worse for me...

Marco.

Hi Marco,

I decided to get to the bottom of this, I initially restricted my tests to the sky Q box, as you have one working in 10bit 4K with this cable...

I set the Sky Q box down to 1080p, connected the monoprice, and then attempted to up the resolution to 10bit 4k, all I could get to was 8bit

So it had to be something about the Panasonic, I then turned off any 'Panasonic specific' features, Viera Link and Intelligent Frame Creation, and retried...bingo 10 bit 4K via the monoprice on my SkyQ box. I suspect 'Viera Link' was retaining some session parameters, or somesuch (perhaps an active cable issue?)... :eyebrows: Worth noting for other panasonic users...they're both back on and all is well on the sky Q front!

Flushed with success on to the UB900 blu-ray, with the settings off I successfully configured the UB900 to 4:4:4, and tried netflix (which I'd not tried before), and it gives me 4k/60/HDR, another success.

However I still couldn't get it to play 'Blue Planet II', or 'Blade Runner 4029', at 4:4:4 only at 4:2:0, why?

Both the blu-rays are 4K HDR with a 24p capabilty, my TV is 24p capable, and the UB900 is set to auto 24p, this would appear to have pushed the cable over the edge...turning 24p off gave me playback at 4:4:4 4k/60/HDR.

So the supplied panasonic is back in, however the supplied sky one is not...not a bad result in the end, I'll keep the other for my laptop :)

Marco

Interesting stuff, Will, and thanks for taking the time to investigate the issue and report back :)

Glad you got the Sky Q and Netflix aspect of things sorted. However, there must still be some other underlying (and as yet unresolved) issue with your Blu-ray player or TV, when trying to display the full content of 4K HDR discs, as the Monorprice cable in question is clearly capable of handling the signal, as evidenced in my own system.

Is your TV properly 4K HDR compatible, in the same way as your Blu-ray player?

I've found that in order to get HDR to work successfully, every item in the replay chain, from start to finish, must be properly HDR compatible, and therefore all components used should also be wired in such a way, in order to achieve that, so at no point in the chain there is a break in the HDR signal, otherwise it won't work.

One of the things I had to do, in order to resolve my recent issue (if you remember) with achieving full HDR replay, when playing 4K HDR Blu-rays, on my HDR compatible Sony player, was to take the signal from the player, via the (Monoprice) HDMI cable, directly to the TV (also HDR compatible), and route it through the system that way, instead of it being relayed via the BD/DVD input on my Sony home-cinema amp, which wasn't HDR compatible, and which was therefore strangling the HDR signal.

The improvement in picture quality that resulted in was significant, because as you know, genuine HDR is a different ball game altogether from HD! Anyway, I hope you can resolve the issue in your set up, as the Monoprice HDMI cable is superb and clearly capable of handling an HDR signal

As stated above both are HDR compatible...I've a feeling it's to do with the generated bandwidth between the UB900 and the TV, they're also both 12bit deep colour compatible, I'd suggest on blu-ray payback it maxing out the monoprice...

Again, the supplied cable, TV and blu-ray can support 4k/24fps/HDR 4:4:4 @ 12 bit deep colour...the monoprice can only play back with a compromise, albeit a small one...the supplied one looks excellent anyway

But looking excellent on the Sky box...

Out of interest do you have a 4k/24fps/HDR blu-ray to test on yours?

P.S. I started this thread about 4K HDR so am well aware of requirements, and benefits...;)

Again my issue was with playing at 24p, do you have a 24p blu-ray?

I read somewhere where a playstation 3 was set up on deep colour as well as the bluray player. this caused the screen to blank out on some blurays including the pe2 one, when both are connected. turning off deep colour on the port for playstation somehow sorted this. not sure if its a copy protection glitch

As stated several times the supplied cable is rock solid at the max settings, including 24p, I'm just trying to understand why the monoprice can handle 4:4:4 4k/60/HDR, but not 4:4:4 4k/24/HDR......

Yes, in *your* set up, Will. The same in any other (non-Panasonic) one is likely to be rather different, so don't automatically blame the cable! ;)

Don't know. What's the 'p' value of a Blu-Ray disc marked as "4K HDR", such as is on my copy of Alien Covenant, which the Sony player and TV successfully reproduces in HDR, via the Monoprice HDMI cable in question.

I think you answered the matter in your earlier (now deleted) post - why you chose to delete it I don't know? :hmm:

As you said, it's likely to be a Panasonic thing. All I'm anxious to guard against is the Monoprice cable in question wrongly being seen as having issues with HDR, when I'm almost certain that's not the case :)

I don't think I was far off the mark, but it seems to be more different marketing terms for the same thing, 4:4:4 12 bit etc. so pulled it to correct it...

With regard to 24p it depends on the disk in question, it's been around for a while, allegedly gives a more film like quality, there should be a setting in your player to activate it.

Both Planet Earth II, and Blue Planet II are filmed in 24p, if you press the 'i' button on your TV during playback you should see either 4K/24/HDR or 4K/60/HDR.

FWIW I think my UB900 chroma chip is doing something at 24p, hence issues with the monoprice at this setting

it upscales the chroma present rather than the luma. trouble with this tech is everyone is trying to do something different and thus you can get anomalies between techs of different companies. add to that, discs are not all the same either so can be a minefield

I have some interesting screen shots detailing the disc and HDMI output formats, but can't seem to upload any images, just get an error at the end of 'file upload'

Basically, the 24p option is indeed being upscaled to 12 bit 4:4:4, from the original disc (planet earth II 4k HDR) which is 4:2:0, whereas when 24p is off the output is 4:2:2 12 bit...hence the added load at 24p

Thanks to Grant for some image assistance...

The monoprice works perfectly well at 4k/60hz/HDR (4:2:2);

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180227/4f663f92964fe781096a9899aaa8d62a.jpg

However when I activate 24p output;

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180227/e176f441953cd984bd63acf1fcbd4a69.jpg

The underlying deep colour upsampling is activated;

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180227/bddc8c28462922e53de4b1232ce0a0e6.jpg

I can't get the monoprice to work at this setting I.E. 4k/24hz/HDR (4:4:4);

No worries, Will. Like I said, I just think one should be clear that the issue you're experiencing is local to you (with your equipment) and not anything related to the Monoprice cable being 'unable to handle HDR', just in case anyone thinking of buying one for that purpose should be so concerned :)

In terms of the bit in bold above (using Blue Planet II as the test sample content), by clicking on the 'i' button, I get this message displayed: 'UHD, 3840x2160p'. However, this is with a BBC broadcast I downloaded from Sky, not a 4K HDR Blu-ray disc of the same content.

The monoprice cable can handle HDR!...it's only being challenged by the my UB900 upsampling 24hz content to 12bit 4:4:4, whereas it can handle the 4:2:2 being passed through at 60hz

FYI 24p/hz is a blu-ray thing, all TV will be 50/60hz...do you have any 4k blu-rays? Do yourself a favour and get Planet Earth II & Blue Planet II on blu-ray, much better than the 4k broadcast...

No problem upsampling to 12 bit 4:4:4 here Will?

Still to pick up Planet Earth II yet, will at some point.
But yeah, Lots of 4K HDR content on Netflix and its brilliant, but not a patch to a UHD bluray of the same thing.
With the streamed stuff, more of a difference with HDR content than 4K vs 1080p I find.

If posting via site then u have to make an album then import them to that. Then you could post them

Here: https://www.cabledepot.co.uk/2m-thin-wire-hdmi-cable-high-speed-with-ethernet-p-3013.html

I'll be doing a write-up tomorrow on the subject! :)

Hi Marco, did you ever get round to the 'write-up'?

Although it's an add on item, this has got to be a real bargain. Ideal for my notebook which uses the smaller size connector but will work on regular hdmi devices with a cheap adaptor.

Late to the party as usual, I've just taken delivery of a Monoprice 3' Ultra Slim (Xbox / BDP to Oppo) and a 25' Cabernet (Oppo / BDP to projector). A modest but perceptible improvement over the passive Audioquest Pearls I've been using for the past 6+ years. I'm not blown away by the improvement Redmere yields, but I am impressed by the price differential and how well the ageing Pearls fared. Maybe my expectations were too high, maybe they need a little burn in time to reach their best? Either way it's an improvement and the Pearl's second hand value is pretty much double what the Monoprice cables cost so their staying and the Pearls will be looking for a new home on eBay.
