View Full Version : Trump's "shithole countries"

It seems odd to me that the furore about Donald Trump's alleged remarks about "shithole countries", which were not specific as far as I'm aware, have kicked up a large outcry from countries that some less tactful people might describe as exactly such, so they obviously have that 'self image' of themselves. Perhaps they should have just kept quiet?

if i was american i's be black affronted by him. a walking, talking dickhead:doh:
I'm pretty sure he named the countries Geoff, if the account is correct of course, but I'm inclined to believe the story.

It does sound like something he would say, but it does seem that the source is someone who was not present, so who knows? It was a private meeting in the Oval Office and I'm guessing that after Watergate they don't tape everything that is said in there anymore:
One of the sources who was briefed on the conversation said that Trump said, "Why do we want all these people from Africa here? They're sh*thole countries ... We should have more people from Norway."

So far, it's just a story. If Trump said something along those lines, I've yet to see it exactly quoted.
I'm reading the book Fire and Fury at the moment, even if only half of it's factual, he's what I would describe as deranged - quite a scary read really.

It's more than that. Too many sources, including Republicans; and yes, he was referring to specific countries that had been discussed.
You're surely not trying to defend the dickhead are you?

Where is the exact quote?
I don't think mentioning something adds up to 'defending'. Although free thinking people would regard that as democratically acceptable.
As for "too many sources", there have been many references recently to 'flat earth' believers. Should we take this idea as proven?

I'll stick my head above the parapet and say he may be correct for many reasons
" Stands back and waits to be slagged off "
I think we still have freadom of speech or has that been done way with now ?

Actually, thinking about it more. Regardless of my views. To me, that statement/question sounds rather judgemental. Are we obliged to all share the same opinions, to toe some arbitrary line of acceptability, as it were?

Just another story to cause argument which, if left long enough, is what will happen to this thread.
There are quite a few countries I'd regard as shitholes. I'd defend my right to think it and say it. I'd also far rather. Politicians spoke like real people. I'm sick of the PC brigade who try and tell people what they can say or even think. If I was an American and there was an election tomorrow I'd vote for Trump. He's "real" and he's putting his country and its interests first AFAIC.

There are those from so called 'shithole' countries, who think it's OK now they are in England, to turn this place into a shithole as well. As I see all around me every day here.

Too true. I've been lynched here before so am leaving it at that.

That's just your opinion Geoff, or do you have the statements to back it up that you always expect others to provide for their comments?

I feel like a foreigner in my own country now :( my area is now overrun , most of the shops are set up for foreign occupants

In fairness we have always had an element amongst the indigenous personnel who are pretty good at that too. I mean, Dickensian London was a shithole, by all accounts. And I remember central London well from the late 1970s and it was a total slum back then. As were large areas of Liverpool and Manchester.

This enough of a statement for you?
It's what the local 'shitholers' seem to think it's OK for me to have put up with. This is the entrance to our estate. My family have to walk past it. It's continual, most of that rubbish having arrived in the last week. The council only get around to clearing it once in a while. I know what kind of people do it, I've caught them enough times. All living within a few yards of this entrance. They don't give a fuck about this country.

i know a lot of guys up here who dump there crap out in countryside. they are allowed to get it picked up from their homes free of charge by council but prefer to dump it. scum has no colour

You think it's OK for me to have to put up with things in the interests of 'political correctness'? For my grand kids to look out of their bedroom window and see a bunch of drunk 'people of a certain type' pissing up the wall in front of the house. To be threatened, just for daring to come out of the front door when there's a bunch of them about?

Absolutely that's not f*ucking OK Geoff.
Decency isn't defined by political correctness OR ethnic persuasion.
Cnuts of all colours...
put it away, behave and fit in or face consequences.
Oh, and Trump?
Shut the fuck up...shitholes wherever in the world people stop caring...

Local council won't collect old white goods, garden waste or furniture free here. That's why there's loads dumped in the streets. That and the fact the local scumbags are too lazy to go to the tip.
I take all my stuff to the tip. Even if I have to cut it up to get it in the car. Including settees and the like.

I really like this quote from Marine Le Pen. It sums up exactly how I feel about people leaving their countries to come to Britain:
"Those who come to France are to accept France, not to transform it to the image of their country of origin. If they want to live at home, they should have stayed at home."

People need to realise that the world is, well ... global.
There's nothing that gives us nice privileged folks the right to fence off the good bits and tell the rest to eff-off back to their own end and die there. Our only achievement was to be lucky enough to be born in the right place at the right time.
And, yes, of course nobody likes scummy anti-social behaviour, but you are truly kidding yourself if you think that immigrants have a monopoly on that! Consider too that if people are literally at the bottom of the pile, gasping for air, they don't have the same stake in society that we might have, and won't feel the same incentive to nurture it. Villifying them isn't going to help.
The leader of the western world needs to understand this better than anyone else.

Ah, so easy to say. Try living here, folk wondering if their daughters will get back from school without being attacked and robbed of their mobiles and cash. Teenaged louts openly using drugs, terrorising folk and causing mayhem. Useless drivers with no licenses or insurance who just leg it if they hit you. People who shit and piss in the street or in your garden if it suits them. Yes, lets all be tolerant. Isn't that nice of us!
It is an alleged statement. If it is true then it is unacceptable
I am very surprised by quite a few posts on this thread.

No it isn't. You might want it to be but in actual fact it is a collection of nation-states whose interests often collide. Pretending otherwise, in the hope that it might somehow magically come to pass because of that pretence makes no sense whatsoever and can have enormous unintended consequences.

Geoff - I live in a quiet backwater in Gloucestershire. The epitomy of middle class, green and pleasant England. Yet we have fly tipping, vandalism, knife crime, muggings, drug use and drink related violence. A quick check of the demographic here will make it clear that this anti social behaviour is not race related. A huge shame, yes. Unacceptable, absolutely. But in my experience it’s far more to do with the world we live than immigration.
There's nothing that gives us nice privileged folks the right to fence off the good bits and tell the rest to eff-off back to their own end and die there.

Oh, but there is. It's called immigration control and it's the right of every nation state.

This is pretty much over my head, Martin, so I'm not going to contradict you. But your post gives the impression that you think I'm making some sort of Lennon-esque pitch for a world without borders. Not so. My point is that the kind of "pull-up-the-ladder" sentiments upstream in this thread show not just a shocking lack of compassion and a repugnant attitude of entitlement, but also a serious failure to grasp what creates "shit-hole" behaviour in the first place.
OK, those are essentially personal flaws - and I've got as many of those as anybody - but we have a right to expect better from institutions, especially institutions that have the capability to affect the course of history, like the President of the US.
IB
Guys,
Due to having received complaints about some of the posts on this thread, and considering the emotive and also provocative nature of the discussion (and how events are likely to end up in that respect, given what's been said so far), I'm closing the thread before matters degenerate any further.
Some political discussions can be successfully aired here, and indeed have been in the past, but clearly this isn't one of them.
Marco.
