You might also be interested in the rotary multi-tool. I have one of these too and it's come in handy for no end of jobs, like enlarging holes in casework for instance. They have a bit set to match it.

I bought something similar from Lidl made by Parkside a couple of years ago. It was complete junk. The solder tip did not fit the iron properly and was loose (you couldn't tighten it) and was of such poor quality that it was unlikely to have made a good solder joint. However, this may be better?

Ive had a lidl soldering kit for a couple of years and found it fine for my limited needs-fixed my tuntable phono connections with it a couple of weeks ago.

I will try to snaffle one on sunday.....thanks for the heads up Geoff.

As I said, I have a number of LIDL tools and have been happy with them. I've a pistol 'weller' type Parkside soldering gun and find it great for speaker plug soldering as the extra immediate heat counteracts the heat sinking of plugs. It's good for plastic welding too.

Generally I find that the irons themselves are okay, but it is the tips that are rubbish. They have poor coatings and corrode away very quickly. If you could find a tip for a professional iron that fitted the budget iron the budget iron would probably be quite good.

Sounds like I bought at the same time as you. Mine works well. I've used it quite a bit and it's still going. I've had a few over the years and this one is as good as, or better than any.

Thanks Geoff,

I have two soldering stations myself and not really happy with either of them. I'll have a look.
My experience with small tools sold by Lidl is the same as yours.

Regardless. It's on sale tomorow. I doubt there'll be that many available, being a 'special'! It comes with two rolls of solder, which normally would probably cost you that much on their own (£8.99).

Weird. I've never seen any of the LIDL specials not appear in the past, bought a good few myself. I wonder if it was pulled for a safety issue? It's a shame, looked like a useful bit of kit.

i doubt it,if there was safety issues they'd have to pull them out of all their stores.

It is a very busy store too.

None at my nearest store here in Southampton.
They had the cordless iron on its own for £5.99, but not the station version, and I got there at 10am for the opening.

An inordinate number of middle-aged men in there though, milling about muttering :D

How easy are the gas ones to use. I was looking at getting a new soldering iron and LIdls ad none left.
What about?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Soldering-Electronics-Adjustable-Temperature-Soldering-iron/dp/B0776X6MSH/ref=sr_1_18?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1516190761&sr=1-18

It would not get heavy use?

Not a whole lot different to any other although best for small jobs in free space. A bit awkward and hot at some angles inside a bit of kit imo. Fine for cables etc and the like. Ive 2 gas bolts and a electric

I used mine for the first time today. It worked really well. But has anyone found a way to stop the plastic collar at the end of the holder spring from constantly falling off! There is a metal ring/ disc on the iron that catches the collar and dislodges it every time I take the iron out from the holder. Irritating, but at the price.........
