Never really had much of an issue with rear ported speakers,although most of what I've had have been relatively small speakers and I've been able to give a decent amount of space to the rear

They do look good. You could imagine them coming from one of the classy Italian manufacturers by their appearance.

If heard a pair of smaller Robsons a few years ago at a mate's. I thought they were utterly beautiful. He sold them and regretted it, but not as much as I regretted not grabbing them off him. I remember then being crystal clear yet incredibly sweet.

I think reviewer David Price claimed timing in base of rear ported speakers were always a nano second behind compared with non ported.

Yeah. They looked "crafted". They left an impression in me that I haven't lost. Part of that was the build and finish. If only life had a "rewind" button, I'd have grabbed them :)

All very true. But if you eliminated all rear ported, rear firing and open rear speakers, you’d have a very small lot left. Exactly why is rear porting so popular?

Aesthetics mainly. The other reason would be to reduce midrange leakage and port resonances.

I think reviewer David Price claimed timing in base of rear ported speakers were always a nano second behind compared with non ported.I would have thought it would be more like 1/500th of a second given it has to get to the rear wall and bounce back again. Haven't considered phase effect from the back of the driver there. Or how long it takes for pressure to propagate in the speaker cabinet to the port.
