Needed for an experiment in my study system - a cheap but interesting active pre, decent gain a must, valves would be a big bonus, phono stage likewise but neither essential.
Budget probably £250-ish?

Hi Tom, I've got a 4 valve single input preamp with about 15dB gain, compact silver case with volume control.
You can try it out if you wish, I'd be looking for £50 for it.

Hi Alan
I need a compact pre amp for my headphone set up that I keep under my bed, if this one's not suitable for Tom, or you have another one sitting around, I'd be very interested please. I do like low gain though as I use late at night and don't like being close to zero with any associated channel imbalance.
Thanks, Lawrence

Hello Alan. Tom has told me that you have a prototype preamp for his Tawan 20W A class amplier:
Quote:
Can you describe what type of active preamp from Firebottle you are using with LPaudio 0-L1 20W A class amp? I'm also interested if solution is sounding good?
You'll need to ask Alan, the one he sent to me looks like a prototype rather than a finished product.
End of quote.
Can you send me what type of preamp it is and if it is available. I want to use same combination as Tom for my Tannoy Turnberry SE speakers. Thanks.

Hi Ales, this isn't something that I manufacture, sorry.
It was a trial with a Chinese buffer board that was modified with a couple of sub-miniature valves that I happened to have.

Are you producing any valve preamp?

Sorry I should have been more explicit, (the other) Alan sent me one, which is ideal for the purpose intended. I'm sorted.

Isn't that the collective noun for a room full of Naim users?

Lots of bizarre discussions about the relative merits of different numbers of NAPs and SNAICs and other such impenetrable paraphernalia :)
Slightly unfair ...to be honest I've never really joined in there except on the odd Tannoy thread but their sales forum can be pretty good especially since the Wam went all commercial-focused.

Hmm. NAP's and Tannoys? Sounds an unlikely combination. :)

A mate had a 250 driving Linn Saras many (many) years ago. That was quite good fun, if vastly incorrect tonally.
He 'graduated' to a pair of 135's driving the first AE1's. That really didn't work. Not to my ears anyway.

I actually quite like the AE1. Wouldn't be keen mating AE1's with Naim though.

Well my mate loved the sound, but I found it way too 'in yer face'.
