Pretty much a 'nothing' day out there today. Dull and overcast, no wind, temperature 6C.

Bright and sunny here. IIRC last Jan was quite mild then when we go into February, it went freezing.

Lashing down (again) this morning with strong, blustery winds. Been having quite a battering with the wind the past few days (and it's not an excess of Christmas pudding :eyebrows:) with gusts of over 70 mph. There's not much between our house and the deep blue so the wind features very prominently here. This afternoon has turned out pleasant though with the sun making a welcome appearance. Temp. around 10c.

Very stormy in the night. Woken around 3.40am by the roof tiles clattering and howling wind. Gotta say I do not like it one bit. Reported gusts of over 80mph on Portland. Brighter now with the occasional blustery shower. May be able to do our afternoon walk. :)

Some perspective: https://weather.gc.ca/warnings/report_e.html?on24#152247624818430149201801040503w w1171cwto

This is for Caledon, Ontario (near Toronto), where we live. Polar vortex is happening again. Last one was New Year's Eve, when it went down to -25C. This time we're expecting temps down to -30C for Friday night, then with wind chill could get down to -40C or lower. Aren't you happy now to be living in the balmy UK? :)

Enjoy the warm weather there!
Svend

struth

Coldest I remember here was -25c. It was bone chilling

Macca
04-01-2018, 18:14
I used to work in minus 28. That was a bit nippy. Minus 40 must be physically painful on any exposed skin.

Svend N
04-01-2018, 18:36
I honestly didn't think it got that cold in the UK... -25 and -28...quite respectable. Martin, at -40 wind chill the frostbite risk is pretty high... 30 seconds to 2 minutes maybe, for exposed skin.

I wonder if vacuum tubes can be used as glove warmers? Perfect shape :D

walpurgis
04-01-2018, 18:49
Coldest I've worked in outside was -10C and that was in West London overseeing snow clearing operations during the eighties. It was a few degrees colder in rural areas

It doesn't, I was working in a temperature controlled warehouse. :) I think minus 11 is the worst we have had where I live, since I have lived here anyway. You've got the wind chill on top too.

Scotland technically is on similar latitude to Canada If we lose the warm air and water streams it can get very cold up here. That was zn exceptional year. Maybe 95/96 or 96/97

Edinburgh is, surprisingly, much farther north than Toronto -- 55 deg. N, vs. 43 deg. The good 'ole Gulf Stream really does wonders, eh? Someone once told me about palm trees growing in Ireland, to which I called BS but I may have to withdraw that as it may actually be true.

struth

there are a number of palm trees that are fairly hardy, some down to -20c. so yup.. there are a few places in uk that have them.

walpurgis
05-01-2018, 00:17
I have a potted palm outside. That and the small fir are the only plants that haven't wilted and died back this winter. Mind you the strawberries are sprouting new leaves.

walpurgis

It could be worse I guess. It was sunny but only 3C earlier and the strong breeze made it feel much colder.

However, in America they have a wicked -18C in the east: https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/us-weather-latest-around-100-million-people-hit-by-deep-freeze-as-dozens-are-rushed-to-hospital-a3733801.html

And in Australia, they are melting in a record 47C: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/australasia/australia-weather-sydney-record-temperature-latest-how-hot-roads-melting-heatwave-fire-melbourne-a8146251.html

I keep thinking the climate in The Azores was made for me. Averages between 17C and 24C for the year. Not too hot and not too cold. They get a bit of wind and rain, but that wouldn't bother me. Nice low cost of living too.

Seems a bit less chilly than yesterday and the day before. Just the usual January gloom. At least it's not raining (yet).

I made the mistake of turning the heating off on Sunday night. The house was like a fridge Monday morning and took a couple of hours to warm up a bit.

We are afflicted with a 'greyout' here also.

5C, but feels colder 'cos it's damp. I'll have to go out, I need some tile cement and the dog will want his walk.

Svend N
11-01-2018, 21:29
Steve - No fair! You shouldn't be allowed to taunt us like that :). Last week (and the one before that) we went skiing at -15C with wind chills of -30. On the nights when it got down to -25 or -30 (windy or not) we stayed home, poured a whiskey and watched a movie. Last night we went out again and it was +6C and drizzling. Quite the swing in temps. We preferred the latter by far :)

Marco
12-01-2018, 07:09
Lol...Taunt? You can keep yer 38C, which I'd die in (can't stand severe heat), and I'll take your +6C, or oven -15C, any day!!

Currently 2C here in Wrexham, dark and foggy, which with the wood burner still warm from last night, and the room nice and toasty, suits me just fine :)

Flash freeze warning for here today. +5C and raining right now...north wind and cold front coming, temps crashing to -15C tonight. All the wet roads and driveways will be like skating rinks.

I was going to attend a fatbike demo day tomorrow at our local trail centre, but I think I'll take a pass. Snow will have turned to ice. No fun to be had there....

Canadian winters...gotta love 'em!

struth

Bit miserable here but it is mild for January. Can't fault it really.

Svend N
12-01-2018, 22:32
What a mess here. It rained all morning, then that turned into freezing rain as the thermometer plunged, then ice pellets, and now it's a howling blizzard. Can barely see the neighbour's house across the street. Temp dropped from +5 this morning to -10 by mid-afternoon, and still falling. Roads are ice rinks covered in snow. Thank god for four-wheel-drive.

And I'm expected to grill a salmon on the Weber outside, which normally wouldn't stop me except I'm pretty sure the howling wind would blow the flames out. I think we'll order in... :)

walpurgis
14-01-2018, 11:59
I do wish the temperatures would buck up a bit. There's stuff I want to be doing outside and I just don't want to work in a sub 10C environment. Low teens will do. Guess I'll have to wait a month.

hifi_dave
14-01-2018, 12:07

hifi_dave
14-01-2018, 13:02
I don't mind it cold, if it's sunny and bright. What depresses me is day after day of thick black cloud.

To the thick blanket of cloud we have had for over a week, we now have rain and wind, which is making it feel colder still. Good job I'm running a Class-A amp today..:)

On the plus side, the days are noticeably longer, still being a bit light at 5 o/c, probably later if the clouds blew away.

Pissing down here.

Not really weather related but they are building a housing estate opposite me and have been good enough to send me the details of the temporary traffic lights they are proposing for the junction at the end of my street. You know how long it takes when there is just a 2 way temporary light? Tailbacks for miles. This is a 5 way. FFS.

That's what I thought/hoped but we now have a slippery 1/2 of snow and it's coming down heavier. According to the local weather forecast, it should get warmer and wetter tonight.

Snow has tailed off, to be replaced with light rain. Apparently, the temp should rise through the night.

Hopefully, a similar situation for Grant..

Well the snow turned back to rain and the dog didn't get a walk. He hates rain and I'm not keen on getting soggy. It's still coming down.

Just back from being out for Sunday lunch (which, btw, was superb) and it's been raining fairly heavily, so the snow's all melted... :(

Pretty grey, drizzly and cold at the moment, but I don't care, as it's now time to open a nice bottle of wine, snuggle up beside the log fire for the evening and watch some TV, perhaps also a good (UHD) movie on Sky Box Office :)

Marco.

Glad the snow has gone and Grant can get out and about. I can sense some pasta being on the menu again tonight.

Damp, cold, windy and very gloomy here. It's a touch warmer but nothing like the BBC promised to be 13c with clear skies. I was looking forward to getting into the garden to do some more tidying but it's too unpleasant..:( Thanks BBC for raising my hopes.

In fairness culpability lies with the Met Office who feed the BBC with their imaginative forecasts. According to their website it is 11 degrees here right now. Is it? Is it bollocks.

I'd like to know if sleet is unique to the British Isles. I reckon it is. Looking at international forecasts almost everywhere gets snow and rain but we seem to be the only place in the world to get both mixed together.

At least that ice has gone for now, I was half way down the drive last Thursday morning, which has a gentle slope ,on my motorcycle, when I realised I was on black ice:doh: I couldn't brake or get off so had to hold on and enter the main road on the wrong side and hope for the best, that got my heart pumping!!

Bloody miserable day today. I don't think it completely stopped raining at any time. It was drizzling when I put the pooch in the car to take him to the park, by the time I got there it was torrential rain, so no walkies.

Chilly and cloudy as usual. We have a nice day followed by a week of cr*p. Spent the afternoon building a Linn LP12 from scratch for a customer. At least I was in the warm.

Never mind Dave. Summer is not too far away.

Then you can enjoy the excessive heat, sticking to the bedclothes at night and sweating every time you do anything even remotely demanding and there'll be plenty of that, 'cos the garden will need doing and then you'll get sunburnt.

You won't be too sure about wearing that teeshirt, 'cos the waistline is getting out of control again.

And of course the roads will be crowded with traffic any sunny weekend day.

Then there's the hayfever, with the sneezing and watering eyes and the wasps and ants that'll bite or sting given half a chance.

I'd stick to tinkering with LP12's if I were you mate!
