Just a night in with a few friends. Did the same last year and it was pathetic-fell asleep, and woke up at 12.15. This time it will be my 60th birthday, so hopefully some nice pressies to wake up to.
We've decided that next year we'll go back to our old tradition of visiting friends in Ayr, they know how to see in the New Year!
How about you guys, what's your most pitiful/embarrassing/memorable/forgettable NYE, and what's planned for this year?
The usual probably. See no one and go to bed The old days are truly gone

I honestly don't really care enough or worry about seeing new year in. If I'm awake and feel like staying up I do, else its bedtime to catch some Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Yeah, New Years eve is fairly crap these days. I think although we like to moan about our lot generally we are much beter off these days and can afford to indulge throughout the year, so come New Years eve it’s nothing special anymore.
I'll be doing what I usually do - celebrating the passing of another crap year (each year seems to be worse than the last) and hoping vainly that 2018 will be better (which given the current geo-political situation is unlikely). :(
Another one here who is seeing in the New year alone. But I like it that way. Going to be listening to some music probably and at about midnight send a flurry of text messages. then off to bed.
I'll be on here probably Grant. Your post was a bit sad. PM me and have a chat if you like.

I agree with Paul, New Years Eve has become crap. I think my falling asleep last year was my body telling me 'give it up, you're flogging a dead horse'.
I was shooting for some amusing stories of past parties etc., instead I seem to have brought up some amount of 'been there, done that, and its's crap', and some sadness too. For that I apologise and will just simply wish you all a happy and prosperous new year, wherever you are.

I know what you mean. Short pub crawl and a party then sleep on sofa is what we did usually. But my mates all lived within walking distance or bus ride in those days. It's a train or a plane to get to em now.

Do your family (daughter and brother) not come round to visit, mate? If not, they should, as it's a family time the same as Christmas Day.
On Hogmannay, we'll be seeing in the bells at home with friends and family. Del's doing some nice nibbles and a good cheeseboard, which we'll be having with some wine and champagne, whilst watching the mad Scottish comedies on BBC Scotland, such as Still Game/Two Doors Down and/or Only an Excuse?, all of which are hilarious!
On New Year's day, we'll be doing essentially the same as we did on Christmas Day, sharing a nice lunch with friends and family (the 'star of the show' this time will be a beautiful rack of Welsh lamb) and having some drinkies, then monging out and watching a movie or two, through the home-cinema system, and once suitably sated, falling into a happy state of deep sleep, and seeing who can 'out-snore' each other...! :eyebrows:

normally we are pretty boring and try to get some kip before the night explodes into fireworks from every orifice ......... this year we shall be in between 2 rowdy pubs so no doubt the sound of bottles being lobbed about !!

We usually end up looking after Grandkids whilst their parents enjoy the festivities. Not this year, though, so we will watch Jools Holland, have a glass of Champagne and go to bed. To me, it's just another day.
New Year's day, I'm taking my Wife for lunch.
I'm quite spontaneous so it's a coin toss as to whether I celebrate or not. What's more important to me is that I'm really looking forward to 2018 with great anticipation :)
As a youth I was always working in the pub on New Year's so never got into the habit of going out and celebrating. Worst night of the year to go out anyway, all the arseholes who can't handle their booze are out getting hammered.
Worst ever must have been 1999, not sure what happened due to excessive alcohol consumption, I can recall at one point wandering the streets with a mate looking for a pub that didn't want forty squid off you just to step over the threshold, and him eventually becoming tired and emotional and trying to start a fight with his brother's mate, whom he'd never met before.
This year's plan, same as last 10 years: couple of cans, watch crappy Jools Holland show until bored, then go to bed.

Aye, you can't beat a nice snore and a good fart after lunch - clears a good space for yer dinner afterwards! :D

Ive done all the usual nonsense in the past. Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Gardens with a bottle of brandy in hand. Ive been first footing in Scotland
In later years I preferred a calm night in with a bit of music. The telly goes off before Hootsananny Hogmanay with Stanley Baxter :) and I have an early bed
This year Ive had an offer to go on a mini pub crawl to a few places that dont charge for entry. I might go but my warm slippers and a glass of cheap irish cream feel more appealing :)
As my unpredictable health tends to dictate what I do I suspect it will be the usual evening with the telly and the cat.
A few years ago when I was a semi pro musician me and a mate were invited to a new years eve party at Saint Hill Manor by a fellow muso, I had no idea at the time that this was the European headquarters of the Church of Scientology and needless to say their brand of 'faith' was not to my liking and we ended up being forcibly removed after having a punch up with their security guards. After a very pricy taxi back to Brighton we ended up in a brilliant pub, not over priced, lots of ladies and a really good DJ. We rounded off festivities with a filthy kebab and to this day no recollection of how we got home. Could have been a disaster but ended up one of the best new years I've ever had.
A filthy kebab is always a good sign. Lol

I think a combination of the smoking ban and the millennium-eve rip-offs more or less ended it for the pubs, as it showed people they could have more fun more cheaply and in relative safety by celebrating at home.
The "going out" culture has changed, and not just for new year's eve. My daughters would start a night out by all meeting at a friend's house with drinks bought from the supermarket, then go into town about 11.30 or so. My younger daughter would regularly return home missing her mobile or a contact lens or a shoe. The fact that they have grown out of this practice makes me feel ancient, but no way would I want to be young again!

Interesting... Why not, may I ask? I suspect that most folk would :)
At 52, I still feel relatively young, and indeed as good as I did when I was 35, as thankfully I have good health and keep reasonably fit. However, if I could press a button and go back to my teens, I'd do it in a flash, as I loved my life then, almost as much as I do the one I have now! :cool:

"Young" is such a relative word, at 59 I still feel quite young, but if I could choose an age to be, I would say about 28. Young enough to have a substantial future ahead (though there are no guarantees), but old enough to be taken seriously as an adult, and not dismissed as a "kid". I imagine most people would consider 28 to be young, but ask a 17 year old, you would get a different answer!
Many of us have happy memories of our teens, but times have changed, and that isn't the youth you would be experiencing if you were a teen today. Internet bullying, binge drinking, the nanny state, political correctness, the "snowflake generation" (google it, makes interesting reading), the pressures of making it in the global economy, oh, and my pet peeve, MyArseYourFaceBook, are what your youth would comprise today.
I have a loving partner, God bless Mrs Pony, so I don't care about being "invisible" to the opposite sex, and my two terrific daughters fill me with joy and pride every day.
My health is still pretty good (long may it continue, but my one sadness is seeing the deteriorating health in some friends and family.
Otherwise it's all good, although if I'm honest I'd like some young ears, mine aren't what they were, too many loud gigs and raves I think.
Yeah, I getcha.... Before when you said that you wouldn't want to be young again, I thought you meant that you wouldn't want to go back to when you were young, rather than what you meant, which was being young in today's age :)
I agree, although how much you'd be subjected to what you've mentioned would largely be down to how you'd been brought up, and the values and what's considered as important in life that had been instilled in you.

My teens weren't especially happy. School, living in someone else's house, not knowing what to say to girls: I wouldn't want to go back there. On the other hand if I could go back to being 19, with what I know now, the world would not stand a chance :)

If I had a bash at repeating what I was doing in my thirties, it'd probably kill me!
I think the idea is you don't repeat what you already did. I was lucky a couple of times not to die, would not repeat those mistakes, you never know how the dice will roll on a second attempt.

May go to the local RSPB ( Im a member ) site with my camera tomorrow for a walk around :)

Question for you Al-do we have a lot more raptors in Britain these days? this year I have regularly seen a buzzard on a fence post when commuting (me, not the buzzard), and a few months ago I saw what I think was a sparrowhawk chase down a pigeon, which crashed into a window and fell dead, with a pigeon-shaped splat on the glass.

I would say yes , Lots of conservation going on within the RSPB and humans are begining to understand that you dont need to kill everything , My Motto is Live and let Live :)

used to have a raptor that visited my garden a lot looking for birds. caught a few too. scared the b'jesus out of them:eyebrows: big bugger it was and amazingly agile

I know people who have stopped having feeders in their gardens as it like having a dinner bell for raptors :eek:

Quite a few around here in busy West London believe it or not. Plenty of Kestrels, I saw a Red Kite a couple of weeks ago and the occasional Buzzard can be spotted now and then.
when i drove a lot up callander way through the hills you sometimes saw golden eagle there.. a really huge thing and fab flier

It is amazing how birds adapt in cities, and how with a little help from humans bird of prey have begun to reestablish themselves in more easily sustainable numbers.

Seagulls, we have them, lots of them... used to have all sorts a few years ago but not much these days for some reason :(

Babysitting grandson, beats going out hands down! Had a few enjoyable times on NYE many, many moons ago, but my mooning days are long gone now. Mostly used to end up spending too much money and having to hold hands with and sometimes kiss(aaarrrrggh!) people I didn't like much at midnight. (I'm sure they felt the same).
