View Full Version : Pair of EL84 Monoblocks
Listed for sale on behalf of wee tee cee of this Forum, I’ve had them on loan for the last few weeks and they are now for sale.
Built by Tubehunter of this Forum, great little amps that sound really good on my Tannoys but ultimately not quite powerful enough to drive them as I’d like. I think they are around 8w?

Very neat. I like the look of those. I'd think they'll turn out a bit more than 8 watts.

Maybe, they might be 10-12 I can’t remember what I was told lol, they are really nice, I had them sitting on top of my Tannoys which looked cool, Tony (wee tee cee] will know more about them I’m sure he’ll chime in once he gets my message to say I’ve listed them [emoji6]

Mikey many thanks....my computer skills aint up to much.
Reckon ive had these maybe 5 years, bought them off Ali tate.
If memory serves Ali got them off Duncan (tubehunter).
They sound quite a bit more grunty than the power amp so can drive 57s without a problem using a passive pre.
Valves are a bit of a hotpotch but they sound rather good.

They look seriously cool.
Are these automatic bias or do you have to delve into the internal HT circuit when rolling the el84?
What input valves are used?
Ta. :)

Hi
These bring back memories.
Really enjoyed planning, building this project. I may have to revisit valves.:)
They are basically WD Kel84 but with EZ81 tube rectification and better transformers and chokes. Being monoblock also improves things no end.
As regards valve bias, no adjustments necessary just use matched pairs.
Input valve is an ECF80.

Thanks Duncan.
Oh 'eck.
Seriously tempted.
What are the dimensions? (viz. would they fit on a single shelf space?)

I thought they looked quite dinky until I saw them next to the LP!
Thanks Duncan.

They sit side by side happily about cd player size.
I waxed the side plates and shone up the copper with brasso.
Its either a Mullard or telefuncan tube.....cant remember exactly swapped them about with the power amp.
The tall ones are phillips.
The ones at the back are sovteks-probably still need a few hours on them though.
I found them to be far more muscular than the single kel84 power amp.
Thanks Duncan-I dont know a great deal about them, bought them off Ali a few years ago and enjoyed some valve flavour in my set ups.

Argh. I do love el84 toobs.
I've an el84 integrated already, but I would like these as well if they are still available.
I'll drop a PM later once xmas day is sorted.

Yup, couldn't resist.
EL84 is my favourite power tube.
I also put a low ball ebay offer on a digital amp yesterday and it was accepted this morning.
Still, you can't have too many amps. :D

Great news Jerry,
I always worry about the courier playing football with the boxes en route.
I will be interested to read your findings and whether you put nicer tubes in to get more out of them.
The sovteks hardly have any hours on them so may need some bedding in.

Is that one of the ring dac Arcam cdps? I've been thinking of trying one to reduce the box count in my new cabinet.

No, it's not a ringDAC.
Arcam DV29 DVD player. Quite upmarket in its day - about £1600 I think. I got it cheaper. :)
I tried one of the Arcam ringDAC CDPs a few years ago and was deeply disappointed by the fairly bland sound. Sold it on straight away. YMMV.
Heard these amps in my system when Tony brought them over for a listen.
Sounds very good, a great example of valves done right. :)

Im delighted they have gone to a good home.
