My gear is covered in dust!

Where does all that dust come from?

The door to the room I keep my system in is kept closed. I don't do anything that generates dust anywhere near it, but every day there's a fine layer of dust on the equipment. If I don't give things a regular wipe, it builds up really fast and looks a mess.

I know having a dog doesn't help, but I'm sure the dust problem never used to be this bad.

Ah, maybe I'm not so sure now, it's what I'd been told over the years....

I admit my 'den' has a lot of stuff stored in it, like books and boxes of Hi-Fi parts and other bits. Maybe they contribute?

If it's not airtight, dust will get in - it'll take longer but it will still get in. I have all my CD's and LP's in units with doors and dust gets in around the edges. I don't have to dust them all the time though, just every 6 months or so. I dust my gear every 2 weeks as with having 2 cats there is more build-up than usual. Thing is, after 2-3 days there is already a small layer of build up but it would get very silly dusting 2-3 times a week!

I suspect the pooch may be largely responsible. He's quite big and fairly fluffy. Not that he sits there scratching all day like some, but I do find lots of piles of shed fur behind furniture and in corners, even a day or so after hoovering.

comes from everywhere and everything.:doh: and static makes your gear a great target. hoovering usually sucks a lot up but puts a fair bit back into the air and it falls on stereo again.

Heavy urban traffic doesn't help - our house shakes when a big lorry passes.

In a few years there'll be nothing left, just a big pile of dust ;)

EU propeller heads comprehensively demolished this theory in the 90s.

Dust comes into our universe in a "fair exchange" when one's car keys leave it.

Very sorry to ear of your problem unfortunately door closed and dog or no dog you had it especially due to your geographical location.
Be careful as many kind of dust it is as it can be extremely dangerous and being so small, same particles may even be alive and looking for pray.
Don't worry jet as first you must determinate what tinge the dust may have: if is whitish like and crystalline Asbestos came to mind
unless it is a bit pinkish like in which case is either pink Asbestos or emogubline rich like living animals pale greenish to brownish I would certainly worry about crlophyl organism like mushrooms in which case this would IMO be the worst possible as even cleaning and boiling does not get rid of spores

Same kind of mushrooms are well known to grow inside the host and eventually cause much terrible pain
Especially if you have children pets and beloved others I strongly urge you to dispose of the contaminated items immediately as dust can not be ever really eliminated but only moved from one location to another.

Part of the problem at least. It's my electric shaver. I go in the 'den' and shave whilst using the PC. I'll bet that adds significantly to the dust.

Can't do much about the pooch though. I hoovered yesterday and there's dog biscuit crumbs and bits of fur everywhere again! :rolleyes:

I have lots of old school retro dust , been here for years , just cant tamper with it ;)

I hope it is not what I had once in a house with a cellar.

Everything would be covered in fine dust after just a day or so no matter what we did. A look in the cellar revealed the culprit: A massive 100KG fungus - hanging attached to a corner under the room. We were actually scared of it - it was just like a 50s SciFi film. I think we just stuck some heaters down there to dry it out and it fell off. The dust was spores.

Rodents in your roof area will create lots of fine dust and hairs which sprinke down into your house. Snakes are OK though.

But, you may be lucky and it's just the dog :ner:

The dust I have is staggering.
My guess is the emulsion on the walls coming off in tiny fragments. Will speak to decorators about sealing the walls

Having 6 small dogs may be an influence too
