Not much going on right now. Murky sky and damp outside. Not as bitter as last night.
Cold, dry and sunny here so far. Looks like it's going to be like it was yesterday, which was gorgeous for a winter's day, with blue skies throughout. I like crisp and fresh weather like this :)

It was only 2C when I got up, no frost though. There's patchy cloud at the moment. It's just a typical chilly December day.
Only three weeks to the shortest day, then we can look ahead to the eventual arrival of Spring.
1 below currently here. at least the wind is away so feels warmer

I drove through blizzard conditions last night on the M11 between Harlow and Royston :eek:
Been out to the post office and to get some brekkie ( freshly made oatcakes with cheese and bacon om nom) and it is blisteringly cold. Painful, even. Sky is clear and blue to the horizon.

Lovely, fresh and healthy weather; the kind that makes you feel alive! :)
Contrast that with the stifling humid shite we had to endure during the summer, on days when the sun was also shining and the sky was just as blue..... I know which I prefer ;)

Not me. Days like this are almost perfect, which is why I love holidaying during the winter months, in countries such as Austria and Switzerland. It can be -15c outside, but the sun is shining brightly and there are clear blue skies all around.
As long as you're properly wrapped up, it's great... You can even get a nice tan, especially high up in the mountains! :D

Bright sunshine here this morning with temperature around 6c. Wind making it feel colder though. Ideal for a walk. I would prefer it to be a tad milder tbh. :)

Overcast and drizzling here. 8C at the moment.
A lot warmer here than it was on Friday. Overcast with some drizzle. No breakfast oatcakes today as they don't open on a Sunday :(

Yes the Staffordshire version. You have to have them fresh off the hotplate to get the benefit. No good buying them in the supermarket, that's like eating a dishcloth.
Very dark here at the moment, can barely see the keyboard. Not sure what the weather is about to do. Snow, possibly.

Humidity is what makes the heat uncomfortable. 80 degrees (in the old money) and low humidity is pretty much perfect for me. Shame I live in the wrong country for it.
Very dark here at the moment, can barely see the keyboard.
Switch a light on then, perhaps, or is that a little too radical? ;)

80°C, for me is bearable, as long as it's accompanied by a cool breeze. But when the air is still, I find such sustained temperatures quite uncomfortable, especially in a large town or city, where it's also liable to be humid.
Much comes down to whether you're the type of person who perspires a lot, or not. If you don't, then you can stay feeling relatively fresh and clean in the heat.
Unfortunately, I sweat like a bastard (like most warm-blooded Latin types), and so it's simply no fun lying in a pool of your own sweat (especially in bed at night), not sleeping properly because you're uncomfortable, or walking around the place during the day in sweaty clothes, and in order to prevent that horrible 'sticky' feeling, needing to shower and change clothes regularly throughout the day, with the hassle all that involves.
Also, houses in the UK simply aren't geared up for hot summer weather. It's a different kettle of fish if you have air-con, wooden shutters on your windows, to keep the sun out, and stone floors, such as is the case in houses abroad. No, UK-wise, give me a nice fresh and healthy, sunny spring/autumn or winter's day anytime! :)

Not my house. It doesn't have air con but if you walked into the living room on a warm summer day you'd be mistaken for thinking it did. I actually have the heating on during most of the summer otherwise it just gets too cold. Perhaps we should swap? ;)

Lol... Yes, but from what I've seen, your curtains remain permanently closed (and as a result, your room is like the black hole of Calcutta), therefore no wonder it's cold, as no sun ever gets in! :eyebrows:

Our lounge has a tiled floor and a large centre rug, so quite cool in that respect, but the only way I can cope in the height of summer, is to close all the curtains, to keep the sun out, wear next to nothing, and have an electric fan blowing cold air at me all day - and most of the time at night I have to sleep on the sofa downstairs, as the upstairs bedrooms are like an oven!
In the winter, the lounge is lovely and toasty, because of the wood burner, and we also have central heating. The key thing for me is that I like to choose how warm *I* want to feel, not for it to be forced upon me by the weather, and that can only be achieved outside of the summer months, which is why I'm generally more comfortable then :)

No worries, I stand corrected. The combo of the latter and closing the curtains on the back window does make it rather dark in your house, though. But obviously that doesn't bother you, so cool :)

Don't like it too warm, but I couldn't stand living in a freezing cold house, and certainly haven't been used to it. For me, any money I had would always be spent first on ensuring that I lived in a comfortable environment, before it would on any other 'luxuries'...

It's the after effects of snow that I don't like. Slush all over wet roads, that then freezes and makes any vehicle journey a gamble.
Years ago while I was driving in these conditions, a woman came flying along at about 40 mph in her car, as if the road surface was normal and dry. She slapped her brakes on and spun down the road about five times, bouncing off several other cars and the front of the van I was in.

Heavy overnight rain has now given way to a bright, sunny afternoon here in sunny Weymouth. However the wind is gusty and the temperature is around 10c. Forecast is cold for tomorrow and Saturday with rain on Sunday. Doubt any snow as it is a rare event here. :)
We have heavy snow forecast, starting tonight and continuing, with a few breaks, all the way through to Monday night. Average temp minus one. Oh dear.
Yesh, especially in that lovely warm lounge of yours! :D;)
Doesn't bother me how cold it gets; just means putting extra logs on the fire!

3rd day in a row - cold, dark, damp, gloomy, depressing.
Old enough to remember ( sadly ) the great freeze up of 62/63 where snow lay in London for weeks on end with plenty of days off school to enjoy it all.
Still think of Boxing Day travelling from Fulham football ground to Ewell village in Surrey on the bus with the first fall of snow laying freshly on the ground, it still
evokes great memories. Lost 1-0 to Man Utd ( Law Best etc ) btw, happy days, sort of.

Transport system and roads were in chaos. Big freeze of 63 Happy days.

I shudder to think how we would cope with a really bad winter with total disruption.
we were snowed in as was the whole area . nothing in or out of the town for a long time. some foods and such became low and they forced a way through eventually. Snow was higher than the door

Lol - there's life beyond supermarkets...Fortunately, round here there are plenty of farm shops. Also, we have two large freezers, full of food, not to mention dried food (pasta, rice, etc) and stuff in packets/tins in our larder, stocks of numerous different drinks etc, so could probably survive for a couple of months without going near a supermarket! ;)
Del works in town, and can walk to work in less than 10 mins, and I don't need to go anywhere, if I don't want to, so we'd be just fine :)

I would have thought so. It is calculated that global average temperatures have risen by 0.8C in the last century. Not a huge amount. Possibly part of a longer term cycle of rising and falling temperatures.
I prefer the term climate change to global warming. The climate has always changed.
I think Climate change can have weird effects on the weather and not always warmer. The jetstream can be disrupted and forced further south which can slow cold air to sink across the country. We may end up with warmer summers and colder winters or just more extreme weather.

Apocalyptic snowfall has failed to materialise.
On the negative side that means I have had to come into work. Everything's a compromise.
Its not nowing, buts its reezing. How deep is it Marco ? will you be able to get out for pub lunch?
It's just stopped snowing now (damn), having given way to bright sunshine and blue skies, leaving a dusting of white fluffy loveliness, about an inch thick - just enough to make things look rather seasonal :)

Bright and chilly here too. The temperature has dropped a degree since I got up, it's down to 2C at the moment.
Just stopped snowing now since I last reported otherwise... It's now a good 5 inches thick, where it's drifted, and about 3 inches elsewhere. We shall see what the remainder of the day brings! :cool:
Just lit the wood burner, and made a nice bed inside it of smokeless coal, topped with logs (central heating is already on), so will soon be nice and toasty, listening to choons with a nice mug of frothy cappuccino!
It's a hard life, lol :eyebrows:

Well, Del came home an hour or so ago, as the college where she teaches was being closed, due to the adverse weather conditions, so that's her finished work for the day :)
Consequently, she's cooking us a nice lunch (homemade southern fried chicken, with corn in the cob and creamed mashed potatoes, which I'll post a pic of later in the food thread).

Made it. Just in time, there is less than an inch of snow but it is starting to freeze over.

It's snowing like a bastard now... Woke up to about another 3 inches, and it's been continually falling since. If it keeps up like this, it'll be 2-3 feet deep by the afternoon! :yay:
At this rate, we could end up being snowed in, as the driveway to our house is about 40 yards long, and so will take a lot of work to clear, to enable any cars to get out... Will take a few pics, showing the situation, and post them later.

0 Deg C here, very heavy snow. My two feral / stray cats not turned up as yet for food.
Hopefully, they'll show up soon, Alex... Ours are pretty much house cats. They're out during the day, although only stay out when it's dry and not too cold, and always in at night. We let them out this morning, and they lasted about 5 mins before miaowing like mad and wanting back in!

Look on the bright side - most likely no work tomorrow, if conditions remain the same! :)
We took the chance to go out yesterday and get things in, as I knew that the weather would get worse.
So we went into Chester, early doors, did the bulk of our Christmas food/drinks shopping, before the herds of the 'great unwashed' descended, bought the tree from our favourite garden centre: https://www.bluediamond.gg/garden-centre/grosvenor-garden-centre which is huge and has a big Christmas department, selling all sorts of lovely ornaments and decorations, so we got a few bits there and then headed home.
Just been outside, and fought through the snow, getting coal and logs in for the fire, and dragged in the tree, sawed some of the bottom off it, to allow water to penetrate, and popped it into the base, then filled that with water. Just need to let it stand now for a bit and settle/acclimatise, before decorating it, which we've decided to do today, as we won't be going out anywhere!

Nice carpet of snow on Hampstead heath and surrounding areas. Bit of a bind for us as we had pub meal planned for daughters 20th, ( to slippery for older person in party) not me I hasten to add !!

The morning snow turned to drizzle for a while, but now the temperature has dropped a degree or so and it's been snowing steadily for over an hour. No doubt it will get colder and the slush on the roads will freeze into sheets of ice and become covered in a layer of snow. Glad I'm not driving in the morning!
Just drove home before melted snow became frozen, main routes fairly clear round here now.
Haven't got to go out again till Thursday so weather can do what it likes.
Why our house is called 'Greyhound Lodge'. The gates to the old Acton Hall Estate, which are part of our house. You can see the Greyhounds on top:

Glad you like the pics, Brian. Our little lodge always looks good in the snow - in fact the whole place lends itself to wintertime, which is why I love this time of the year :)

....and (for me) six weeks off all alcohol for Lent? Joy oh joy, lol ;)
Yeah I get all that, and of course (as referred to above) the most important celebration of the Catholic year is at Easter. However, as a season in itself, I still prefer others, as mentioned before.
I get excited mostly when I have holidays and family/friends get-togethers (nice meals, etc) to look forward to, and I still love winter (I quite like the dark), regardless of the short days. I generally have more fun/things to look forward to in the summer and winter months, so that's a big factor for me in terms of the seasons I enjoy.
The colder, dark nights simply provide a reason to light the wood burner, along with some candles, and make the house nice and cosy (as you know, our house lends itself to wintertime), in a way that can't be achieved during spring or summer, and I really like that. Plus, I don't suffer from SAD/depression or have any issues in terms of feeling the cold - quite the opposite, in fact.
We're just wired differently, that's all :)

same here, but weather is to break tomorrow and get a fair bit warmer and wetter.
Foggy here. My favourite weather although it's not very thick, about 100 yards visibility.
When I lived on top of a hill in the countryside the fog was so thick you could see it seeping in through the gaps in the window frames. If you opened the door it would billow in like smoke. Visibility would be about 2 yards.

Nah... We want some snow on Christmas Eve, continuing to fall on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, for atmosphere and seasonality - then it can melt! :)
It won't happen though, as I suspect we've had our quota of snow now for this year. Anyway, it's also mild here in Wrexham, and suitably gloomy (and cosy). The darkness showing off the lights on the Christmas tree, flames in the wood burner, and the candles we've put on the table in preparation for a late lunch.
Snapper and I are just enjoying a rather nice medium dry Amontillado sherry, with some canapés, before we go to the table.... :cheers:

£21900 less the cost of vaping. Marlys are still only ten quid a pack. Still a significant sum of money though. I roll my own so it would save me about £1K a year. But I've no interest in it.

Lots of good things about Canada but the winters are not one of them. I worked with a bloke who went out there to live and came back after a few years, said he was fed up of digging the car out of the snow to go to work and digging it out again when it was time to go home. And we complain when we get a couple of inches!

Being born into it, you get used to it pretty quick. I'm fortunate to live in Southern Ontario so usually the snow isn't too bad. I just hate driving in it.
We've also got inordinately cold weather right now. A big arctic air mass has moved in. It's suppose be -15C or colder for the next week. Bring in the brass monkeys.

I dont remember these winter temperature fluctuations in decades gone by. Its changing by 10 degrees in just one day and it seems we are right where southerly and Arctic fronts are fighting each other.
I remember the winters being far worse when I was young. We dont seem to be getting as much deep snow conditions in the UK compared with the bad winter of 1963 for example.
I wonder about the effects of global warming on the UK
2009/10 and 2010/2011 were long and cold winters. Nothing like as bad as '63 but that was a huge exception, like the summer of '76.
Regrettably GB is positioned in one of the worst places on the planet to have predictable weather. On the plus side extremes of hot and cold are very rare here.

It's always fluctuated like this to a greater or lesser extent. I should know, I spent all my career working mainly outdoors. Although, I do agree, memorably deep snowfall has been less in this region for maybe thirty years. I oversaw winter road gritting and snow clearance for a local authority for quite a few years and recall dealing with major snowdrifts during several winters in the eighties. Not seen that for a while.
There is an element of human global warming and there is an element of natural too. It's the way the planet and the solar system affects us. Hell not that long ago it was a lot warmer in Britain now it's changing a bit. Hard to say where it's going as it's so complex it can't be modelled. They can't even get a weeks weather right mostly ffs

No matter how warm the sea gets it will still be bloody freezing. The only sea I've ever been in that was an acceptable temperature was the Caribbean. Now that's a quality sea.

It is known that the cold period in the 1700s coincided with the Maunder Minimum but as far as I am aware there has been no proof of any connection between the two, it is just theory at present.

drove down from Perthshire yesterday. very windy and had to pick our way around branches everywhere on the roads.
Then the rain started. Wipers on full speed could barely cope at times.
