I wouldn't be so sure.
Those guys have got LOTS of money!
They can bankroll it, with their name on the front.

It's just a publicity stunt.
Until they find a usable water supply on Mars, nobody will be able to live there. They couldn't carry enough extra fuel to blast off from there for a return journey or have enough materials to build shelters either and the solar radiation problem seems insoluble.
You can get around the radiation, just means you have to build your spacecraft in orbit and send up a bit at a time. Very expensive but as Jerry says, they have the money, at least until their oil runs out.
Getting back isn't an issue as there is no shortage of volunteers for a one-way trip.

Yep, I wouldnt write it off as pie in the sky either.
I've been all over Dubai and the money and rate / speed of building, level of luxury / high end they are doing is unbelievable - seriously
They have the money, lots of it coupled with a mind set that is to do it bigger than, better than ........

Another article. More nonsense of course. An 'imitation of a martian city'. How do you imitate something that does not exist?

The UAE say they'll have it going in 2117 - I'll have to start eating healthier if I want to see that! :eyebrows:

Yes - and that's unfortunately all Dubai is: a collection of imaginatively designed skyscrapers, shopping malls and golf courses, totally lacking in character or any semblance of culture. I hate the place.
think the first gold bar vending machine was there... so tacky;)

Wouldnt say I hate the place but like most places I've visited, an experience for myself the wife and our daughters - We always make the most of where ever we go.
One drawback with the UAE doing it. Imagine a 6 month voyage to Mars and when you get there you can't even get a drink... the living would envy the dead.
