One of the many things I love about vinyl is the run-out groove message. CD just has no equivalent.
So what have you got in your grooves?
I just put on:

Great thread, Chris. I'm not around my vinyl collection to check, but I do have a lovely 7" where the B-side is given over to an etching by Savage Pencil.

One of the most beautiful slabs of "12 inchs of plastic with a hole in the middle" (Man) must imho be Styx's album Paradise Theatre, with its laser etched playing surfaces...beautiful and a fantastic album imho as well.

Going off topic a bit, the thing i miss with Vinyl is my Gong - Camenbert Electrique LP as the side finishes it continously repeats itself on the run out, the CD tries to create this to a certain extent but it doesnt really work for me.

That's the one :) He also did stuff for The Wire magazine, at least he was a few years ago. My subscription stopped a while back so I've not checked it recently.
This is not something that I have taken too much notice of, and I'm not going to go through all my vinyl looking for these scratchings at the moment.
Apart from a few marked 'It's a Porky Prime Cut', I do have a scratched message, around the area near the label, on:
'You Gotta Be A Hustler If You Wanna Get On' by Sue Wilkinson, Side A. Cheapskate Records Limited, CHEAP 2, (1981).
It reads:
"Redhead Girls Give Secrets Away".
You've started something now Chris. Each time I pull out an LP, I'll be looking for these cryptic scratchings. Or are you referring to audible messages in the run groove? If so, can someone PLEASE tell me what is being said in the run-out groove on Side 2 of the Beatles 'Sgt. Pepper'?

Yes Mr Peckham was involved with an enourmous number of classics. I don't think he signed them all though - didn't it start quite well into his career?

Is it just a UK thing? I can't recall seeing any American lps with any run-out messages.

Anyone remember records 'signed' by Bilbo, I think he did stuff mastered at the Exchange but could well other mastering studios as well.

I've got at least one Bilbo - can't remember what it is though!
US lp's - I've got a Bootsy Collins album, which just has the guy's name on it. Boring!
The 2 albums released by the band of a friend had things on both sides. Their first album was a Porky Prime Cut & one side had 'Dinsdale!' on it, while the other had 'Innit Bloody Marvellous!!' (these at the request of the band, in addition to 'Porky Prime Cut')
Their second album wasn't a Porky but had 'Sorry Phil' and 'Heavier Than a Very Heavy Thing!' on it.

Just checked my copy of that - it has 'Pierre' on one side & 'Normale' on the other. That locked groove at the end drives me mad!!

The 'Camenbert' 1st presing was on the french BYG label (Actuel), laminated cover..Prior to that was Daevid Allen's 'Bannana Moon', prior to that 'Magick Brother'. If you can't get enough of 'Camenbert Electrique' check out the soundtrack to 'Continental Circus'

PECKO is Porky (George Peckham) again.
I also read somewhere that if he did a pressing that he wasn't entirely happy with, he signed it with the name of another guy who was a rival engineer at a different studio - don't know if it's true or not!
A lot of the Porky Prime Cuts were on the independant labels like Stiff and Virgin as, by this time, he was a hired gun with a fantastic reputation for high quality work & therefore much in demand.

That was entirely my intention!
Re. Sgt Pepper, I think it's a multi-track of several speedied up voices & unitelligible to me too! There's a similar thing on 'Revolution #1' on the White Album.
Locked grooves would be the subject of another thread, I reckon!
'Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast' on 'Atom Heart Mother' ends with a loop of dripping water.
I suppose this thread should really be called 'What's Between Your Run-out Grooves'.......

The James Gang (Joe Walsh's band) 'Yer Album' has locked grooves on both sides. Side one: 'turn me over, turn me over, turn me over……' ad infinitum
Side two: 'Play me again, play me again, play me again…'
There are several examples of locked grooves in Mothers of Invention albums , notably 'We're Only In It For The Money' (I would say that, wouldn't I?)
Moby Grape - ‘Wow’ has a locked-out groove - it's not connected to the groove that contains the other tracks. You have to re-cue the stylus at the end of the record & play it at 78 rpm.
There are also parallel grooved discs like Porky's cut of Monty Python's 'Matching Tie & Handkerchief' - the 3 sided record. It also has a locked groove – ' Sorry squire, I scratched the record… I scratched the record… I scratched the record…'
The b-side of the 12" of 'Pop Music' by M is also a double groove where you don't know which track you'll get.
There are several albums which consist entirely of tracks which end in locked grooves. I can't remember what any of them are though except for …………..
The most schizophrenic record I know of is 'Pagan Muzak' by Boyd Rice (as NON) - a 7" disc that came in an LP sleeve. Each track (17 of them) had a locked groove but the disc also had an extra spindle hole so that a whole new set of 17 non-concentric tracks could be played. You were also encouraged to play it at 16, 33, 45 and 78 rpm! This gave 500-odd permutations of track choice & obviously needed you to be pretty nifty on your feet if you wanted to hear the whole disc in one session! As the grooves were locked, you could choose the length, pitch and tempo of each track (& presumably vary them at will!)
So despite it only being 7" in diameter, this made it a truly long playing record!

I've got a limited 12" single of Birthday by The Sugarcubes, which has two mixes on the first side, on two parallel grooves. The two mixes are quite similar... until about half way through when the Jesus & Mary Chain lend their guitars to a lazy drone in the background. The fun is that you don't know which mix you've got til the guitars kick in! Sounds like that 'M' 12" :)
There was also a limited edition LP of Drill Your Own Hole by Gaye Bykers on Acid, where you, um, had to drill your own hole (the centre hole was missing from the LP). Subsequent issues have addressed this defect (including the copy I own, unfortunately!).

OK here's a few from singles
M's legendary Pop Muzik 12" parallel-tracker side was adorned with the legend "A Bilbo special"
Come Back My Love single by Darts read "A Hovis Flyer" and the follow-up "The Boy from New York City" had "Hovis Flies Again"
"Kitchen at Parties" by Jona Lewie had "Sod the Whale..." on the A side and "..Save Jona" on the flip. "Stop the Cavalry" was etched with "Jona Says.." on the A side and "Merry Christmas Everyone" on t'other.
One of my favourites (how sad am I?) was on the Q-Tips single "SYSLJFM". Obviously Bilbo was a big fan.
A side: As well as the legendary "A Bilbo Boppa" we have "Love Ya Joe Tex".
B side: Little drawing of a saxophone followed by "(580.3381) This is wot it's all about Bilbo TA1PE"
Any of you remember Nick W (EMI) Allen (Warner Bros) and Tone (Polydor/Chrysalis amongst others)?
