I've always found I prefer the sound of integrated amps that use 6SN7s in the input/driver/pre stage (sorry I'm not technical on valve amp design) compared to ECC82/3s so I was thinking about adding a yaqin 6SN7 based buffer between my passive and power amp, but then I also thought I could try a pre amp that used these tubes. Or failing that get another integrated that has them in. I would also try 6SL7s on the assumption they sound as good.

Are you going down the Croft Charisma/Epoch route? If so get in contact as I have a SHED load of mods I could recommend.

If only I had the money!! Would these mods take me to the Marco level?? No it's likely I'll be going down the "Silk road" on this one, unless an interesting diy or obscure alternative comes along.

Well myself, Marco, and Joe all own very similar level pre amps with pretty much the same mods. I think joes is different in that he has a dual mono power supply fitted to his. So, yeah, the mods would take you to Marco level and maybe beyond :eyebrows:

I didn't realise that. I guess what I'm hoping to achieve is about 80% (however you measure that!!) of the performance on a shoestring.

I will post you a link to a thread that I did some years ago with regards the mods to my preamp.
