Thelonious Sphere Monk...
would have been 100 years old in October this year.
Without doubt one of the most original and forward thinking musicians
The world has ever produced.
What are your stand out Monk moments?

Obviously not many Monk fans out there!
Oh well we tried...
Oh I wouldn’t say that. I have a few, and played my favourite ‘Straight, No Chaser’ for Monk’s 100th.

He really was. So ahead of his time and genre

In my limited experience, for me it was first hearing Underground, especially when In Walked Bud came on, saying that, I'm not sure if he wrote that number though. Loved the cover too!

For me, above all, Monk was an original. Many tried to peg him as a boppist, but to me it was "Monk's Music", unlike anyone else. My favorite is "Thelonious Himself" on Riverside. I also like "Alone in San Francisco" and his solo Vogue and Black Lion (listen to "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "Something in Blue"). I am partial to his essence distilled down in solo format.
Best,
Barry

I love that Brilliant corners LP, I like the off beat nature of Monks tracks, the original melodies, can't remember my fave songs by him, something called goodbye porkpie? And the last track from corners - 'Bamsha swing'.

Yes Monk was so original and individual.
For me, so ahead of his time.
I believe early in his career this was commercial suicide

My favourite Monk's recording is probably Thelonious Himself, but my favourite album of his music is Carmen Sings Monk by Carmen McRae. Easily her best record, too.
